Norton spyware vs Limewire I just noticed that my norton internet security package also came with spyware protection. Does this effect my ability to connect to limewire? If so, how do I turn it off so the red brick wall can leave and LW can work properly??? |
It depends upon what type of spyware protection it is. I know some spyware companies have joined forces with other AV companies but not sure which. Spyware programs don't normally act as firewalls per se. Check this Configuring Norton Internet Security. Whatever you do, don't run XP firewall & norton firewall together. They clash resulting in less security, not more. It also causes LW problems so disable XP's firewall in the control panel. If you still have a firewall problem it may be a NAT firewall within your router/modem. So enabling UPnP on the device will hopefully overcome that if this is the problem. |
The rule on my norton firewall pertaining to LW is as follows: Action: allow direction: outbound computer: any communications: any protocol: tcp and udp Are these settings correct and also how do I enable UPnP on my modem: (Motorola SBG900) and/or computer? |
I don't have Norton AV so I can't confirm the settings. Someone else could. As for your device, I'm not sure if your device supports UPnP. You'd need to telnet into it & check to see if it does have the option. If not, then forwarding a port is the answer. Port forward instructions are here Port Forwarding for the Motorola SBG 900; Telnet address is http://192.168.100.1 |
I'm using a rather old version of NPF, but those settings look correct, except for maybe the outbound...should be both outbound and inbound... |
1st, thanx 4 responding so quick lotr; 2nd, what is the user id and password i can use for the telnet http://192.168.100.1 |
ok peerless. let me try that and i'll get back wit u. |
peerless: i changed the direction to inbound and outbound but still no luck. the red brick wall is still in front of the globe. any other suggestions??? what all kind of systems do you have i.e. modem, isp, os? |
I connect directly to my modem, and there is no firewall built in..RoadRunner...XP MCE... try this..first disable automatic internet configuration of programs in NPF..then manually go in and delete all references to LW and Java..(while LW is off of course)...then start up LW and say yes and always to the questions NPF will ask... |
to configure the motorola sbg900 firewall to allow limewire. What should i put in the following fields: Port ID: Enable: Allowed protocol (drop down box): IP, UDP, TCP, or UDP/TCP Port range: Protocol number: Allow Inbound (checkbox) should i check this? Allow Outbound (checkbox) should i check this? |
hmm...well I am the wrong person to ask about that, as I've never had to configure for my router... I would check both of the last, as gnutella requires both up and downstream traffic....protocol UDP/TCP, and yes for enable (if that is an option)...as noted, I am using an old, old version of NPF..yes it is updated to current specs of the kernel, but it doesn't have all the other stuff newer versions have... |
Did you click on the link in my post above. I think it explains as much as you need to know. Port number should be 6346 as shown at portforward.com ip is the one explained you set up. When you see a blue link like that, the idea is to click on it. Here's it again http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm (Type in my 1st post, I meant to write Norton FW not AV. :D) |
