OPAL TELECOM DSL NETWORK may be shaping your p2p use suddenly. You're from the UK right? I don't know the who that company resells through.

Peerless November 12th, 2006 09:00 AM

I trace to Amsterdam..the hope just prior to that is the UK

Keltriv November 12th, 2006 09:02 AM

Peerless November 12th, 2006 09:05 AM

wow...my trace was wacked!..as a note, we do such things for various reasons, one of them to be able to try and determine your ISP and such so that we can give better advice...

Keltriv November 12th, 2006 09:24 AM

Are you willing to try an experiment? Try downloading a magnet link from here http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml & tell us what happens in regards to speed & connectivity, etc.

If you suffer the same problem, then chances are, the problem is your ISP. That link connects to a website which can potentially offer downloads over 200 KB/s.

Keltriv November 12th, 2006 12:29 PM

ok well my connection is really strong but the speed at the mo is at nothing..and now its waiting on busy hosts..!!!..

Keltriv November 12th, 2006 12:38 PM

is there nethin i can do to fix this then?!?....

Lord of the Rings November 12th, 2006 12:46 PM

Waiting busy hosts from the magnet site? wow! Either the site is busy or ... no I just checked it out. Mine was queued for 2 seconds & then downlding at maximum speed. What's the name of your ISP?

Another option is trying different connection ports or proxies. But proxies are difficult & tedious to set up & find one that works reasonably.

Give your ISP a call & demand to speak to a technician & say you've been having speed problems & ask are they shaping p2p programs. BTW the majority of ISP's in UK are now bandwidth shaping p2p sharing. They use special programs that detect the program & can either block it or shape the bandwidth it's using along that port or a range of ports or simply the packets somehow.

Here's an example of some p2p shapers that ISP's may/do use: sandvine :

eemmmm..mine is from talk talk broadband..!!!

Lord of the Rings November 12th, 2006 01:18 PM

Ah now you tell us ... eek

Have a look at the TalkTalk reference here ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire

I believe there is a partial answer, but it's basically to use it only during certain times of the day. That's from memory.
Alternative is to find a UK ISP that doesn't filter. You can send ukbobboy01 (click on link) a personal message to ask him, as he has done some research in the UK area for ISP's that don't shape bandwidth.

And yes, it's not unnormal to be using p2p fine & then suddenly speeds suck. When the ISP detects you using high bandwidth & p2p then they will apply the brakes.
