"Still Connecting" message still there after about 20 mins

OK, so I startup LW and I get into it and it says "connecting" and when I put my cursor on the little bars at the bottom, it says "you are currently connecting to the network" and I never have more than one green bar and when I search I never get any results, what is going on here?

birdy November 26th, 2006 06:46 PM

Make sure you're only using 1 software firewall & that it's configured properly.
Check the sticky below, it has heaps of connections info. If you're seeing the firewall icon, make sure to look at the UPnP & port forwarding info for routers:wink:
Connection problems? Check here first!

If you're still stuck, tell us your details. Post #2 of the sticky shows what info we need!

ok... so I learned that it isnt my norton. Limewire is permitted in the eyes of norton. but I cant get to that "you have successfully completed this test" link or whatever it is. so I guess something isnt right, how do I get my computer to allow access to that port?

birdy November 26th, 2006 07:20 PM

If you tell us your details, we have a better chance of working out what might be going wrong. So far, all we know is that you use Norton:D

Jeffgon November 26th, 2006 07:23 PM

I am pretty much a computer moron... I use windows XP with norton 2004/2005 I believe... um... I have like 18.5 GB of hard disk space, but I have an external hard drive with 140 GB... um... there is a mouse... and a thing I guess you mortals call a keyboard... and I guess a monitor... that is kinda important... but seriously... I dont even know what specifics you need... lol

Jeffgon November 26th, 2006 07:31 PM

oh, I have a wireless connection and it is a belkin 1.0.7.4

this link doesnt work: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/

limewire 4.12.6 Java 1.5.0_03

I sometimes use MSN but mostly I use firefox.

I do see the little brick wall thingy... but I dont think I have more than one firewall... and like I said before, in the eyes of norton, we are all good to go.

thats about all I can discern from the list of stuff the post gave me... does that help?

Who is your ISP (who do you pay to use the internet)?
Where do you connect from (house, school, apartment, student accommodation etc)?
Is this your first try with LW?
What operating system (Windows XP, 2000 etc)?
Is the Norton firewall the only one you're using...if you're using Win Xp, is the XP firewall turned off?

Jeffgon November 26th, 2006 09:48 PM

um... I think qwest is my ISP... but i'm not sure...
I'm using windows XP. I connect from my appartment.
how do I check to see if my XP firewall is turned off? maybe that is the problem...
I used limewire last semester from my dorm room with great success...
and like I said that page that has the link doesnt work for me.

Is your apartment part of any school accommodation? Some apartment complexes have a separate firewall & may also block certain things...if the test page isn't working then something's blocking LW's default port. Lots of school accommodation does block p2p. Do you know if anyone else in the apartments can use LW, or any p2p?

To check if your XP firewall is turned off, go start > control panel > double click on Windows Firewall...it will show if it's on or off.

You could try connecting using a different port. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config, from there you can change LW's listening port. Try port 64049.

Jeffgon November 26th, 2006 10:18 PM

ok, I couldnt find the windows XP firewall thing... maybe I dont even have it, I thought it was windows XP... hmmmm... oh well, I will try that other port. I am just living in an apartment with my sister, it isnt part of any sort of school accommodation. I have no idea if anyone else here can use LW...

birdy November 26th, 2006 10:24 PM

If changing ports doesn't help, check with the complex's manager, or whoever's in charge of the internet. Find out whether they'll let you use p2p.
Or try some other p2p apps & see if the same thing happens.
Good luck:wink:

Jeffgon November 26th, 2006 10:28 PM

ok, the firewall is turned off... yeah... still isnt working... hmmmm... and my the only two computers this actual wireless internet connection serves is my sister's and mine. so... I may have to put limewire on her computer and see if it works on hers.

To be honest with you, if your ports are blocked then I don't think it's going to do much good. But try if you like.
I don't think you've given me the right model for your Belkin though, even Google doesn't bring up anything for that model...have a look again. Check the site below (click on link)...you'll see a list of Belkin routers. If yours is one of those, you'll find step by step port forwarding instructions:wink:

Did you ever change LW's listening port?

Jeffgon November 27th, 2006 03:39 PM

I thought that was the port I was supposed to change, I changed that once and it didnt work...

birdy November 27th, 2006 03:44 PM

Did you change to a high port, like 64049? Have you tried any other p2p apps & if so, does the same thing happen?
