limewire wont connect 1. OS version? windows xp 2. What firewalls you have? mcafee personal firewall plus 3. How much ram? 512 mb 4. Hard Disk space available? 36.8gb 5. Connection type? i think modem 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? it only says "webstar" on my my modem 7. Where are you trying to connect from? my apartment 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? limewire 4.12.6 pro and java 1.5.0_09 9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Rogers 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? it says your test worked 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. i only have bitcomet on my pc, but it doesnt work either 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. no i used limewire for a loooooooong time, and this started happening yesterday 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? yes [B]i tried re-installing limewire a THOUSAND times, but it doesnt work, and its on the allow list on my mcafee firewall. It worked fine, but since yesterday, it doesnt go past the first bar (its stuck on "starting connection" and same with bitcomet). i dont know whats going on, my internet is workin fine... |
anyone? i REALLY need help i dont know what happened, it shows a brick wall on limewire but its allowed on mcafee i also have emule and bitcomet, but all 3 cant connect... so i dont think its about the program... i ever tried turnin off my firewall, but there is still a brick wall in front of the globe... :( |
Rogers are known to be anti-p2p, but my understanding is they don't apply their shapers or blocks on all users ... only the high level users or perhaps in certain regions of their domain. Try changing the listening port LW is using to a higher number between 49152 - 65535. A good one to try is 64049. ie: go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & make the change there. Then restart LW. If no good, then you could try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) But this will mean you will have to reset "all" your options again once you re-open LW. Your Webstar, is it port forwarded or does it have UPnP enabled? Did you ever change anything in its settings? Not sure whether your model has an internal NAT firewall or not. But you could always try forwarding a port if the above fails: http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm |
i dont know if its port forwarded or upnp enabled cuz i dunno what those things are or how to check. and i never changed anything because uhh i dont know how to lol |
Then it sounds like it certainly isn't port forwarded. Open up internet Explorer & type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar & press enter. What happens? If that doesn't work, type in http://192.168.0.1 & see what happens. |
on internet explorer: "We can't find "192.168.0.1"" on firefox: "The connection has timed out. The server at 192.168.0.1 is taking too long to respond." |
type in http://192.168.0.1 & see what happens |
same thing happens... whats the difference n e way? |
and also when we got this modem (it was replaced with the old modem from rogers) i dont think we installed any software for that modem, although i wasnt home at the time... |
It's not software on your computer, the concept of telnetting is communicating directly with your modem device. The softw page you'd see would be the firmware within the modem itself. But by the sounds of it your modem is "simply" a modem with no internal NAT firewall. I presume you tried changing the listening port within LW. I wouldn't normally recommend this, but close LW, turn off your McAffee firewall temporarily until you've finished this test & re-open LW & see if you still get the brick wall at the bottom of LW's interface. Have you seen this? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=49331 I don't see where your set up is to blame. The problem is possibly your isp. |
do which test with mcaffe off? and i tried to do what ne0teric suggested, but still no change its strange cuz i had limewire and rogers working together for more than a year now, and i dont think its the fact that we got a newer modem either, cuz limewire worked after for a while too... im gonna uninstall all my p2p software and disconnect my modem for the night and hope that it will work in the morning |
also if im not sure, but i think limewire always worked with the brick wall. but once again i might be high... |
hi - i seem to be having a problem with connection. I d/loaded one song today - no probs - now when i try to d/load it says 'connecting' and nothing happens. the connection bar is on 4 - people are uploading from me? but i'm not getting any d/loads. i have not altered any settings and i have used limewire succesfully for a long time? thanks |

I think you problem is most likely this one: Beware of Fake files in search results or something else re: your downld sources. Keep searching for more results & more sources. |
so... any suggestions? because everything worked fine until 2 days ago...:( |
You deleted your LW prefs, re-checked your firewall settings & made sure XP firewall was off, changed LW's listening port, ... etc. Not too many options left. Why not try Phex to see if you have the same problems. Other option is proxies .... there's many types. But it's a long process to find one that works. You need to keep trying out new proxy addresses, & also try different types of proxies. PITA If no go, then it looks like Rogers put the brakes on your p2p use 2 days ago. Give them a call (speak to a technician) & ask them to remove the p2p filters/blockers. BTW what did LW Pro support tell you? You have LW pro so I presume you sought their support also. |
i actually just called rogers, i asked them if they're blocking limewire or something, they said they're not blocking it, they are just slowing it down. he said since a lot of people use it, it creates problems so they slowed it down from like 100% to 60% (or maybe hes lying). and although i dont really know how to use proxies i tried some yesterday... but the thing that is really retarded is the brick wall infront of the globe... i dont know why its there... also, where can i ask the lw pro support? |
and also 2 days ago, when it first started to not connect, i left limewire running for a long time and it actually went to the second bar really rarely, and once to the third bar, but no use... doesnt happen anymore though |
You can find the link to Pro support here http://www.limewire.com/english/content/support.shtml |
ehh i cant get support cuz i didnt actually buy limewire... and i called rogers a thosand times and they all say that they dont block p2p, its just limited or they slow it down... |
Rogers is listed here ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire |
w/e then i guess i dont know how 2 fix this ill just hope for it to mysteriously fix |
o and btw i just tried phex, same problem :( |
Well looks like Rogers is to blame if you ask me. |
oo ur 1 post away from 20,000! nice |
I've been having the same problem; I have used Limewire for over a year; suddenly a firewall on Limewire and it won't connect. I also use Rogers. I have tried all the above suggestions but it doesn't work. I 'm going to check with Rogers to see if it is an ISP problem. |
If it is Rogers, we may get an influx of people with the same issue. You both may find you're living in the same area. ISP's may add shapers or blocker techniques on particular users who are suddenly using a lot of bandwidth, or they may apply it in certain areas/regions of the ISP's domain, or it may be universal. Rogers have admitted publicly that they are anti-p2p due to its high bandwidth use. But I haven't seen many posters on this forum affected by their policies yet. They may only now be starting to put the foot down. |
hey i just came back from school, turned on limewire and it suddenly works and went up to turbo-charged. i have no clue what happened, but it seems like for most of the people it just fixes itself... strange the brick infront of gobe is stil there though... |
