The famous unable to connnect..........

I have been using LimeWire v4.0.? Pro for years with no problems. Tonight I decided to upgrade to the latest Pro version (4.12.6) and now I am getting the (what I now know to be famous) "Limewire was unable to initialize and start......firewall.......etc. ) I have literally been reading on this site and other sites from internet searches for about five hours as I didn't want to post here fullly realizing that those of you in the know likely see this all the time....but, alas, I have reached my wits end.

I did everything suggested in the threads/posts/sites that I read and still get the same thing.

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows XP pro
2. What firewalls you have? Windows firewall and not sure if these count or not but I also have Windows Defender and Norton Anti-virus Corporate edition
3. How much ram? 384 mb
4. Hard Disk space available? 12.7 GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) cable modem
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorola SB5101
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? Townhouse
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. Limewire version 4.12.6 Pro and Java 1.5.0 update 10
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? Shaw Cable
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says: "Your test worked"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. no, simple, single PC with no other p2p software
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. Have been using 4.0.? Pro for an awful long time without any issues, problems started after I upgraded to 4.12.6 Pro
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Can't get there

Additional info that may help:

I turned off my windows firewall, disabled windows defender and disabled real time protection on my norton all at the same time and still same error message. I phoned my ISP's technical assistance line to ensure that there are no issues with Limewire being blocked and confirmed that my cable modem (which I purchased through them) did not have an internal firewall.

This is driving me nuts. I have literaly been working on this for over 5 hours. Luckily I shave my head or I'd of pulled out all my hair by now! Any help most appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

P.S. I am really not very computer savvy so if you find it in your heart to try and help - which I would most appreciate - please keep it to a level that a computer idiot can understand!

Thanks again,

Steve

Yes, here I sit again trying to figure this out! I must have nine or ten hours in by now!

Anyway, I don't know if this is significant or not but just to try it I booted XP into safe mode, tried to open Limewire and got the same message.

Try the beta 4.13.0 (There is a pro version too)

Also try the Java Beta (can't remember the links. In a hurry, just search the forum)

Well, it seems to be fixed.

If anyone is having the same problem; I downloaded a program called "One Care Cleanup" which completely removed Windows Live onecare from my system. For whatever reason, when I tried to run it from the link, it didn't work but when I downloaded it to my desktop and ran it, it worked fine. Sorry, I don't have a link for the program but if you google it I'm sure you'll find it.

Now all, for the moment at least, appears to be working fine!
