Cannot Connect, have tried *everything*.

I've been using LW for two years with nary a problem. At the moment, I cannot connect. I have the usual "brick wall" and only *one* out of 5 possible bars. I'm using version 4.13.

Here's my specs:

AMD 64 3700
2GB DDR2 RAM
250GB HDD, with 90GB Free
Windows XP Professional

Here's what I've tried:
-Reinstalling
-Downgrading to a previous version
-Port Forwarding
-Exception on my Firewall (Kerio Personal Firewall)
-Disabling Firewall
-Deleting preferences folder
-Deleting LineWire folder
-Updated Java
-Defragged
-Cleaned out Registry
-Re-defined my speed as "T3"... have tried every speed
-And much, much more!

And yet it still does not work. It worked yesterday, but not today. No, my ISP doesn't block such things... other P2P programs work... like my .torrent programs.

What is the problem? This is very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
-Gub

Gubru January 19th, 2007 07:36 PM

Oh, and also it will not close. I have to go in to Task manager and end it's process tree.

That's a first, too.

birdy January 19th, 2007 07:53 PM

What's the brand & model of your router? If it supports UPnP, have you tried using that option within tools > options > advanced > firewall config?

When you port forwarded, did you set up a static IP first? Also, did you make sure that LW's listening port & the port forwarded were the same number?

Have you tried changing to a higher port number (eg 64049)?

Just out of interest, who is your ISP?

Have you double checked that the XP firewall is off?

When you deleted preferences, did you also check for a folder in the old location of C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire?

If you have SP2 installed, are you using one of the connections patches?

Linksys BEFSR41, it supports uPnP, and that option is enabled.

Yes, I am running.. port 52043, I believe.

My ISP is Telus, located in northern Alberta, Canada.

Yes I did, and I also deleted that folder too.

I just installed the connection patch.

Gubru January 19th, 2007 08:24 PM

And thanks for the quick response.

Gubru January 20th, 2007 08:24 PM

It worked for around 5 minutes... and then crapped out on me. My connection is solid, my firewall was down, all ports that it used was opened... and then the next day when I boot up my pc, it still does not connect.

Oddly enough, Shareaza was giving me the same problems, too.

birdy January 20th, 2007 08:50 PM

AFAIK Telus aren't anti-p2p. But maybe they're having some issues right now that are causing problems with p2p?? Have you tried any other p2p apps besides Shareaza & LW?

Are you sure it's not your router crapping out...is everything else ok internet-wise? Have you tried resetting your router back to defaults ( a pain I know) & setting things up again?

Gubru January 20th, 2007 09:05 PM

I have other computers plugged into the router, and they run LW *perfectly*.

Gubru January 21st, 2007 05:21 PM

This is totally random... it *seems* to be working again... 4/5 bars... but with a firewall icon on. Odd...

Gubru January 21st, 2007 05:21 PM

And you know what? As soon as I finished typing that, it shot down to the old 1 out of 5 bars with the firewall. Oh, joy...

birdy January 21st, 2007 06:49 PM

Sorry...this is beyond me. Bump your thread every now & again, somebody else might know what's going on.

kamalis January 21st, 2007 08:25 PM

I and a few friends are having the same problem; LW Pro was working fine a few weeks ago, now it's just stopped. Done everything as recommended, even had to purchase a NEW LW Pro as my first one was not registered in their database according to them. Also no response from their side. I thought it was the earthquake in Taiwan, but it seems to affect other users not affected by that sub cable damage.

Gubru January 21st, 2007 10:16 PM

This is just weird, guys...

Gubru see if there's any firmware upgrades on your Linksys. Some devices may fail in UPnP mode or be unreliable. Particularly if it's an old or oldish model. But then, if it connects ok but suddenly cuts off it 'might' be ISP interference with special programs that block p2p programs as soon as they detect them. If you have a dial up option, see if you can connect with LW on that just to check to see if it works. (some isp's offer dial up also as a backup. I can connect via either if I choose. I simply need to change the net setting in my system.)

kamalis we need some more details: System details - help us to help you (click on link)

hi_shobhit76 yes as many details as you can obtain would be beneficial. Mumbai rings a bell in my mind that at least one ISP there blocks p2p (but I can't confirm that.)

hi_shobhit76 January 22nd, 2007 03:14 AM

My PC details....

1) OS...windows 2000 professional
2)there is a windows firewall and McAfee virus scan enterprise edition is installed but i dont think it contains a firewall.
3) 1 GB DDR RAM.
4) 4 GB in one partition and 10 GB in another partition...total 40GB hard disk
5)I dont know the what is the connection type in our company.....is there any way by which we can get to know the connection type withonly my single PC.....i dont want to ask to the higher authority ppl.

6)same as 5)
7) from my workplace
8)limewire 4.13.0.......java 1.5.0_10
9) dont know again
10) It says that "your test worked".
11) Yes, i am on LAN.

12)No i am an experienced user of LW but i used to do it from home earlier but now i try to access it through my work place i.e. office where i have a LAN as internet connection.

13) Yes....i see it....i think my windows firewall is still on.

please help me now guys...

Gubru January 22nd, 2007 07:49 AM

I don't have a dial-up modem, and my ISP allows the other computer's on my router to access LW.

I thought about a firmware upgrade too, but I'm new to routers (used to be on a HUB), so how would I go about to doing that?

Lord of the Rings January 22nd, 2007 08:32 AM

Gubru make sure you're not using the same port as the other computers using LW on your router. Consider port forwarding for just this one computer that's struggling.

hi_shobhit76 try varying your listening ports around in LW. Go to Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls. Port ranges between 49152 - 65535 are usually good to try. For XP firewall make sure you configured it to allow LW full access: Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

Gubru January 22nd, 2007 03:40 PM

Half the time, the other systems aren't even on; and I'm sure LW is using a different port.

But here's something weird: LW worked for all of three minutes: I had a firewall-less planet and FIVE GREEN BARS! I did a search for a song, and it got a few results, but a few minutes after that (when I tried a second search whilst the first was already going), it crapped out on me again and I got the ol' 1/5 bars. However, my planet remained *unblocked* by a firewall icon, which is new.

Lord of the Rings January 22nd, 2007 11:53 PM

Interesting article here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...00348~start=60 although it doesn't really apply. Just an interesting read & potential issues for Telus.

Gubru is it possible for you to connect without the Linksys router? Just to see if the device is playing a part here.

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 03:51 PM

Alright, I'll try that.

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 04:03 PM

Nope. I am now connected directly into the wall, no firewall or anything, and I still have the firewall icon infront of the planet, and continue to get 1/5 bars... it works on all other machines on the router.

I've tried replacing my ethernet cords and switching router ports.

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 04:37 PM

OMG, WTF?!

...IT'S WORKING! For some reason.. I *HAVE* to have my firewall up for LW to work?! I mean, I'm not complaining... but as soon as I ran LW with my firewall (Kiero Personal Firewall), it popped up a message to which I clicked yes, then I got 5 bars and no firewall icon infront of my planet... which doesn't make sense!

But I'm not complaining.

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 04:38 PM

Wait. Falso alarm, false alarm.

To say I *had* 5 stars... It worked for all of three minutes once again, and then BAMF! Back down to 1 star. Oh woe is me... WHY MUST YOU TEASE ME SO? I managed to download another WHOLE 10% of my song for the brief moment LW worked.

...Whoopee... :/

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 04:42 PM

I guess I'm getting somewhere.

Now, whenever I start up LW, it connects - 5 stars, no firewall - for a minute before giving me the ol' 1/5 bars again.

Also, LW lets me open up multiple copies of itself, and won't shutdown properly - I have to go into task manager and end the "LimeWire.exe" process because when I close it, it hangs on the "shutting down window bar gauge" thing.

Just an odd anomaly I thought I'd mention.

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 04:54 PM

One last thing that I noticed: My speed will continually rise - 2, 8, 32, 47, 68... I got up to 110kb/s when downloading my song, then it slowly dropped.. 100, 87, 42, 30, 20, 0... back to 0 kb/s before finally giving me 1/5 bars again.

Lord of the Rings January 23rd, 2007 05:10 PM

Yes sometimes LW does that don't know why about multiple copies. Task manager is best bet otherwise it would eat up too many resources. So are you connected directly as you tried or with the router?

Gubru January 23rd, 2007 05:21 PM

I tried connecting directly with still no success. I put my Router back in, and that's when it started almost-connecting; but I have got this in the past.

Gubru January 25th, 2007 12:31 PM

Half past twelve
And I'm watching the late show in my
flat all alone
How I hate to spend the evening on my own
Autumn winds
Blowing outside my window as I look around
the room
And it makes me so depressed to see the gloom
There's not a soul out there
No one to hear my
prayer

Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight
Won't somebody help me chase the shadows away
Gimme
gimme gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the
darkness to the break of the day

Movie stars
Find the end of the rainbow, with a fortune to win
It's so different from the world I'm living in
Tired of T.V.
I open the window and I gaze into the
night
But there's nothing there to see, no one in
sight
There's not a soul out there
No one to hear
my prayer

Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight
Won't somebody help me chase the shadows away
Gimme
gimme gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the
darkness to the break of the day

Gimme gimme gimme a
man after midnight...

There's not a soul out
there
No one to hear my prayer

Gimme gimme gimme
a man after midnight
Won't somebody help me chase the
shadows away
Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight
Take me through the darkness to the break of the day

Well your attitude ain't so great now is it. Perhaps JAMES CABLE has started to block or shape p2p or specifically LW. Did you try another gnutella program such as Phex to see if you have the same problems. Disable your XP firewall if you're use Kerio FW. Recheck your Kerio settings. We don't know what modem/router you have so the NAT firewall it contains is your little secret you didn't tell anybody about. That may be related to your problem. BTW LW Tech support will refuse to answer questions if wares or copyright infringement is mentioned.
