Firewall Issue?

I am a new user to Limewire. I downloaded and cannot open Limewire. A pop-up says that it might be a firewall. I have done all that I can with my firewall support and tried all the other suggestions in this forum. I can get Limewire to work when I turn off the firewall, but I obviously don't want to run it that way. When I tried to change the exclusions under "internet worm protection" as was suggested in one post the buttons were grayed out so I could not choose to modify exclusions. Separately, I did "permit all" for Limewire under programs, still with no luck.

Have you tried reconfiguring the Norton firewall?
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...10&postcount=6

Also, make sure that the XP firewall is off, that will conflict with Norton.

pkot March 9th, 2007 01:35 PM

I tried that and no luck. I've tied so many of the suggestions in various other posts and still no luck.

itsnobodysfaultbutmine March 10th, 2007 01:46 PM

Similar problem

I've got the same problem with Windows firewall. I've added every single possible limewire program to the list of exceptions, and it still won't run. I turned off windows firewall for a sec and it works, so windows firewall is definitely the problem. What could be blocking limewire from acessing the internet?

birdy March 10th, 2007 02:48 PM

Go through the steps for configuring XP firewall below...just to make sure you haven't missed anything.
Firewall setup

Maybe remove all the LW exceptions & start from scratch again...see if that makes a difference.
Is the Windows firewall the only one you're using?

pkot March 12th, 2007 12:23 PM

Windows firewall has always been off and the Norton firewall is set to permit all for limewire. Limewire connects only when I turn off Norton firewall.

birdy March 12th, 2007 03:45 PM

I don't use Norton, so I don't know of any little tricks.
Have you tried uninstalling & then reinstalling the Norton firewall? Give that a try & if things are still not good, I'll see if I can find some Norton users for you;)

Pkot.
Just Delete all permisions for Limewire in Norton re start Computer & start L/W
Limewire will apply afresh, then set full permisions again, sometimes spam n crap create bugs it sometimes just needs a refresh.
Birdy Did mention this, but you never said you tryed it.
Peace.

Update your Java to 1.6. Use the JRE offline installer & remove any ohter Java versions on your computer before you install the new one.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

In LW go tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port number to 64049 (or something in the range of 49152 - 65535). Apply > ok. See if that changes anything.

Enable UPnP within your router. Then use the UPnP option on that same LW page where you changed listening ports. Apply > ok.

If that doesn't change anything, try port forwarding for your Westell. Here are the instructions.
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...W/Limewire.htm

Remember that LW's listening port, port within the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within a router must all be the same number.

@ rexdinosdad,

I also have a Westell Versalink 327W and Verizon. I have mine portforwarded and it works great. Follow the link in birdy's post. I tried using UPnP but couldn't get it to work.

Be sure to set up a static ip before you portforward LW or it won't work. http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

If you run into trouble, post back and maybe I can help.

Edit: Recheck your firewall settings. I was able to use LW after I had allowed access for it through my firewall without portforwarding. I only portforwarded so others could upload from me.

pkot March 14th, 2007 02:55 AM

Ok, now someone else's problem is getting fixed through my thread. I'm still at a loss as to what to do. I have tried reconfiguring Norton Firewall, deleted all permissions for LW in the firewall, restarted and I still get the same message. When I try to restart LW I don't get a message asking if I want to allow or permit LW to connect, I only get the message that says LW couldn't initialize and start and this is usually due to a firewall issue or loopback problems.

mickjapa108 March 14th, 2007 04:43 AM

Pkot Hi

Ok! lets just try somthing, Can you disable Norton completly for me, and Go to
Xp Firewall & enable it, then restart your computer, now try to connect L/W,
If this works properly. You need to uninstall Norton
After uninstalling Norton from Add or remove Programs.
Go to search, Type Norton in search (All or part file name) Click on, more advanced options untick, case sensitive all other boxes tick, hit search &
delete Norton files.
Now repete search with the word "Symantic" spelling I dont know, you have it
When finished reboot your computer.
Now with internet closed and all apps closed, Re install Norton, then password protect Norton Settings, This is a must to protect norton from being enterd from the back door, Do this first before updating program.
Then update, n run a complete scan, Now try to start L/W.
Peace.

Hi mickjapa108,

My Norton is not on disk, it was purchased as a download so I wouldn't be able to close the internet and re-install. I have found a solution, sort of, that may be of help to all Norton-challenged LW users.

My original Norton Firewall was 2004, and I purchased the renewal each year. My renewal was due to expire, so I purchased a newer product, Norton 360, which combines all Norton tools in one. I previously had Norton Systemworks for antivirus, antispam and other tools, and a separate firewall that was later connected with Systemworks on a prior renewal. I think this created the problem. I'm not an expert on this so don't quote me.

After installing Norton 360, which removed all prior Norton products, LW works fine so far. I also find other websites that had partial blocks on their content work fine as well.

For any Norton users maybe upgrading to a newer product would help, or uninstalling and re-installing could work as mentioned in a prior reply. I haven't tried the uninstall and re-install so anyone who does try should post a thread on whether it works.

mickjapa108 March 17th, 2007 01:04 AM

Pkot Hi.
Your problem was that a worm had enterd the back door of norton and made
changes to how it works, I suspect that if you installed 360 straight over the
top of the old norton, you may still have a problem,
You can get a Brute Force Uninstaller from nortons website made by them to
completly remove all norton files from regestry & memory.

P.S..Anyone that Has no C.D.for reinstall should coppy Norton installer App to
desktop before uninstall. People with a cracked copy of norton, Put it in the Bin, it will never work propaly.
Peace.

rexdinosdad March 18th, 2007 05:50 AM

ok after a bit i was able to enter all this and made sure the lw was at the same numbers restarted computer and check f/w made sure lw was also in as a trusted site still unable to connect

ok tried this took some time not computer teck but I was able toget the following links to be on the routers list and enable them but they showed fire wall could still stop these so I made sure that lw was a trusted site and all the numbers stated the same restarted computer checked numbers all there still unable toconnect?

Did you try birdy's suggestions:

Did this just start after you upgraded your version of LW? When I upgrade mine I have to make a new exception for LW and when I update java I need to allow it also.

You could try turning your firewall off just long enough to start LW and see if it connects. Then turn your firewall back on. That would help rule in/out your firewall. I don't use the xp firewall so I'm not sure about it, but if your not confident about your router settings I can post some screen shots of how I have mine.

If that fails, try the fixes in this thread: Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should!

mickjapa108 March 20th, 2007 05:34 AM

Oliasys Hi.
I think its your isp Roadrunner, Ive had a few Roadrunner uses with a simila
sounding problem, Phone them, ask if there shaping P2P trafic, if they say No, ask for that in writing. they will come clean then.

Also Vista,L/W & Mcfee working together have ishoos, but can be overcome
Im not up on Vista, so look in the L/W Vista forum, or type Vista/McFee in search. that will bring up other posts dealing with that subject.
Peace.
