Limewire keeps disappearing! I have to then reinstall! help!!!

I've done this numerous times with this computer (Dell, Windows version 5.1 sp2), but with my old computer (compaq, same version of windows) i had absolutely no trouble. Here's what happens: I download Limewire and it installs fine. I use it to get songs. And then, whether I shut it down or not...anywhere from a few hours to the next day later, Limewire is simply...gone! The icon sometimes disappears from the desktop, and sometimes looks like a blank file (no lime pic, just something white there). If I do a search for it, computer sometimes finds it part of it but it won't open. And sometimes the computer can't find it at all. Then I go back to limewire.com and reinstall. When it comes back, there's my songs, my library, and everything like I left it. This is frustrating me beyond belief.

System details - help us to help you Please.

Cut n paste these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista)
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ?
8. What version,LimeWire & Java,Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
10. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?

These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first!
but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details.

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

First if you could turn off Windows firewall, 2 running at once conflict.
Go, Start/control panel/security center/windows firewall, and turn it off, then
restart your computer.
If thats not solved it then you could try this.
Sounds like things have become jumbled.

Follow thease instructions exactly.
So, you need to Go, Start/All Programs/LimeWire n Uninstall all L/W versions.
Do Not Uninstall From Change or Remove Programs.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now Go to, Start/Search/click on all files n folders/more advanced options/
& make sure, case sensitive, is not ticked. (all other boxes should be ticked)
Now!!, Put limewire in box, (all or part of file name) & click search.
Delete everything found, including Prefetch folder, (I mean everything)
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Go to,
START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs,
now completely remove all versions of java.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Use this Link to get (jre-6u1-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe) Use the off line installer, NOT the (recormended) one,
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
When Download is completed.
Disconnect from internet, close ALL apps n reinstall java.

Now!! Use this link to download latest L/W version using the off line installer
http://www.limewire.com/
If you need help, Shout, If it fixed your problem or not, Feedback helps others.
Peace

I've got a few questions for you:

a) Do you use AOL and it's anti-spyware app?

or

b) Do you use Pest Patrol as your anti-spyware app?

either way, Pest Patrol and AOL's anti-spyware app (a Pest Patrol clone) always, without exception, deletes Limewire's exe file, thus rendering it useless.

yes!!!!

so what should i do? all the things recommended before (initial post) or something with pest patrol?

ukbobboy01 April 1st, 2007 02:48 PM

Carol

The only thing you can do is stop using Pest Patrol and use something else, like one of the following that are well respected and recommended anti-spyware apps that does not interfere with Limewire:-

Ad-Aware SE Personal - Free

Spybot - Free

AVG AntiSpyware – Not Free but has a 30 day trial period

UK Bob

PS. I use all three.

My daughter has LW AND has pest patrol. THe PP isn't interfering with her LW at all. What do you think?

ukbobboy01 April 2nd, 2007 03:38 AM

Carol

Have you checked with your daughter the last time she ran Pest Patrol?

The problem is, and it is well known to other forum members, that Pest Patrol (and it's AOL clone) will always delete Limewire.exe (and/or LimewireWin.exe) whenever you run it.

These are some of the past postings and solutions to Pest Patrol and it's replicas.
