Direct Connection and the Listening Port

If I change the Listening Port, I can still search and download OK, but the app reports "Your computer is behind a firewall or router and cannot receive direct connections."

I thought the Listening Port was supposed to be "freely changed" to facilitate compatibility and security (read: that it is supposed to be changed). And that direct connect clients would simply enter in xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:<user_defined_port>.

Did I miss something here?

It is freely changed but if you have set up port forwarding you will need to reconfigure your router for what ever port you are using.
