Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall :) I have only the AVG FREE Antivirus and the XP Firewall 16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). AUSTRALIA Hello there, While I am by no means an expert, I suspect that my problem arises somehow from the wireless network I have. I did not set it up and dare not disconnect it (even if I knew how) as I would probably not be able to reconfigure it! I ran into a problem trying to set the port permissions in the Router screen because it asked me for my computer's IP address, in the sequence 192.168.1. ? . However, my network has been set to ""Obtain an IP Address automatically". However, typing 'ipconfig /all' in the command line reveals my network comprises: 192.168.1.2 - the Realtek NIC, and 192.168.1.3 - a netgear wireless adapter. My modem address is 192.168.1.1 so what on earth do I enter for my PC IP address?? The report from ipconfig /all does show my computer with the Host Name 'desktop' but it does not show an IP address at all. (For what it is worth, it reveals Primary Dns Suffix - blank, Node Type - Unknown, IP Routing Enabled - NO, and WINS Proxy Enabled - NO, I hope someone can kindly assist me here, and I look forward to a response in due course. Thanks very much, Roger B :) Since writing the above I have found a thread suggesting winding back the Java, could this apply here to me? I quote below: "One other thing, roll back your java to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 12 the new one is not working for many. Now! Go to, START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs, now completely remove all versions of java. Re BOOT Your computer NOW. Now! Use this Blue Link to get "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 12" Use the off line installer, NOT the (recommended) one, 4th one down. Java SE Downloads - Previous Release - JDK 5 When Download is completed. Disconnect from internet, close ALL apps n reinstall java. Fingers crossed, Peace. __________________ mickjapa108 " |

2 Attachment(s) Hi Mickjapa, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am sorry but I am having a problem with "& dont forget to create a static IP first". I have telephoned my ISP (Optus) and they refuse point blank to give out a DNS address but I have been to 2 websites where I have got conflicting data! I am attaching 2 screeshots which show the DNS addresses I have found and wonder if you can decypher these for me. The relevant website addresses for these two screenshot are Welcome to the Optus Service Request Site - DNS and Ozcableguy in case the screen shots do not show what you need. Please can you suggest how can determine what to enter in the boxes for the Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server in the TCP/IP Properties window. I am worried about losing my internet connection if I do the wrong thing. I have a recent Norton Ghost image so if I do mess up the internet completely, will a restore using the Ghost files bring back my original TCP/IP settings or are these not recorded in a Ghost image? Thanks for any further help you can give me, Best wishes, Roger |
Hi Roger, Try giving Optus another call. AFAIK they should give you that DNS server info (I'm with iPrimus & I don't even have to speak to anyone to get it...it's within an option in the phone menu). Maybe if you speak to a different person this time, you might have more joy:confused: Also found this, see if it helps at all. Optus DNS Server.... - Cable - OptusNet Can't help you with the Norton Ghost question though....someone else will have to answer that one:D |
Hi Birdy, Thanks for the suggestion, I will try again. Have to leave it till tomorrow now - off to 'Oceans 13' soon :) Hopefully I'll hear re the Ghost thing too soon! Thanks for the input, Roger |
Birdy Thanks for coming to my rescue Birdy, Ive spent an hour scratching my head trying to figure it & Im lost |
HI, Thanks for the responses. I have checked the Whirlpool thread which seems a bit confusing and I have phoned and written to my ISP (Optus) with little joy. In fact I had a reply to my email which I quote below: "Dear Roger, Thank you for your e-mail. Optus Broadband only offers a static IP feature for our business customers, If you are a residential customer unfortunately at this point in time we are not offering a static IP services." I have spoken to a friend who also uses Optus Cable and her Internet Connection properties are the same as mine. I am not sure what to try, maybe I should use one of the Melbourne DNS addreses in the Whirlpool thread and see what happens! Can anyone say if the Norton Ghost image I have will restore the TCP/IP stuff if I end up with no internet connection at all? Thanks, Roger |
I think that the Optus guys are getting confused about the static IP address. You don't need to lose your normal dynamic IP. All you're trying to do is set up a static IP so that your router can recognise your computer & port forwarding works. Wondering Why (one of the mods here) had a shouting match with Optus recently about exactly the same thing:D Once she explained that she just wanted to port forward, they ended up giving her the info she needed. Send her a PM (click on the blue link with her name) & she'll be able to give you more info;) wondering why As for the Ghost thing...I'll ask around for you! |
Hi Roger, I received your pm and the DNS server numbers I had where for Brisbane... This is what I said to Optus customer support, so they would tell me the numbers... I stated that the modem/router had a Nat Firewall and that I needed to open a port to let World of Warcraft through the firewall (as they may not like you saying you want it for limewire ;))...Customer service will have no idea what you are talking about, so you need to ask for the supervisor and tell him/her that by law they have to tell you these numbers and if they don't and your son cant play world of warcraft because of their Internet connection that you will cancel the contract and see them in court... Don't say anything about the staic IP they just don't get it... Just state that you want the prefered DNS number as well as the alternate number.. |
Hi Wondering Why, Thanks so much for the very detailed reply. I shall call Optus (and join the long queue for tech support) and see how I get on. With the knowledge of how you set about getting the DNS server numbers, I feel more confident. thanks again, :) Roger |
