Help! (connecting again)
 
Hi all,

The other day I went to access LimeWire and for some reason there was no connection. The bars down the bottom didn't light up and they also didn't show the status like they used to (eg, poor, excellent, etc). I also didn't get any alerts saying that there was no internet access. This is the first time I have tried to use LimeWire on this computer BUT it belonged to my dad before me and it worked perfectly for him.

I checked Zone Alarm and all access was allowed, so I decided I would just uninstall LimeWire and do a reinstall. When I reinstalled it Zone Alarm asked if it could have access, I agreed to everything. It still won't work.

I can't help but wonder if its something to do with the fact that I'm on wireless internet, but the connection options in LimeWire are basically non-existent and I know absolutely nothing about wireless internet.

I'm not stupid, but I'm not completely technically literate so please try to go easy on the jargon.

Ok, I just noticed some other people seem to put this in:

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) XP
2. What firewalls you have? Zone Alarm?
3. How much ram? 640Mb
4. Hard Disk space available? 17 Gig
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Wireless
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Haven't got a clue, don't know how to find out.
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? House
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LW 4.12.11, Java 1.5.0_06
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Ihug
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Page can not be displayed
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. There are two computers on our wireless connection, but only mine was connected at the time.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I have used LW before, and it has been used before on this computer, but I haven't used it on this computer before.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Pass.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall I think it's just Zone Alarm
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). New Zealand

I found a few things about your ISP that suggests they are shaping p2p connections...
Telecom says newsgroups and Jabber are P2P - and ratelimits them
We're not anti-P2P but some ports are shaped, says ISP

They also have a fair use policy in place...
ihug - welcome to ihug!

Have a look at your modem/router it connects you to the internet, if you have a look underneath it, it will tell you the name and model number for it...That way we can see if it has a firewall and you will be able to Port Forward...

These instructions are for your Zonealarm firewall and limewire, have a look and see if you have it configured properly...
Port Forwarding for the Dlink DI-604 (this link should read Zonealarm..)

You could also try updating your Java, it's a bit outdated...
uninstall your Java from the add/remove programs and then re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version....

Thanks for the help. So far it's pretty much gone:

- The first two links make no sense to me whatsoever.

- Underneath the modem thing it says the brand is Billion and it's a Wireless ADSL VPN Firewall Router, Model: BIPAC-7500G

- I tried to do the Zone Alarm thing but I only have the trial version, not ZA Pro.

- I've upgraded Java like you recommended.

It's still not working though. Thanks again for your time and effort, any more ideas?

Have a read of this thread...maybe ihug are blocking some ports???

So first of all try changing ports. In LW go tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049 (or something in the range of 49152 - 65535) > Apply > ok.

If that doesn't help, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

If that doesn't help:wasntme:...try port forwarding. These are the instructions for your router.

Don't forget the step of setting up a static IP address first. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within a router all have to be the same number;)
