urgent help please! thanks (can't connect)
 

ok basically my limewire has been running smoothly for months. However, over the past 3 days its been going funny.

One of the times I loaded it took me through a tour as if it had never booted before, but after that everything ran smoothly. WHen I boot it now and start downloading, it stays saying "connecting" indefinetly. When this happens I can usualy solve it by completely shutting limewire and restarting it. However today this does not work and I cannot get past the "connecting" screen.

On average I am connecting to roughly 1 in 20 downloads. For instance if I am downloading songs by ****, I try to download one with say 60 hosts. Nothing. One with 70, nothing. Another with 60 might get it, but that will be it for half an hour so theres obviously something wrong. Only thing I could think of was a firewall. I went and changed it to "allow all activites for limewire" but still no luck.... any ideas?

Try this first: Delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

Some of the files you're trying to download are probably fakes. These will sit connecting for ages & then get stuck needing sources forever. Try using the All Types search. Search for artist or album, rather than song title. Go for a file with 10 sources or less, or those with a modem source. There's more info in the 2 threads below;)

thanks for the suggestions. I cant even seem to find a folder called preferences! it would be in the limewire folder in program files wouldnt it? does no folder mean I dont have any preferences?

Have a very close look at the instructions & sample image about how to delete your LW prefs folder; Fixes for LimeWire link Birdy gave above. ;) You probably can't find it because it is in a hidden folder called Application Data. You need to make that folder visible first.

You need to click on those blue links Birdy gave you. They describe how to recogise & ignore fake files.

i did all of that but i still cant get a connection

I still cant find a folder ANYWEHRE in my application data :S

1. It will be either of these 3 places if you are using Windows:

C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\limewire

C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

C:\My Documents\.limewire


Application Data is a "Hidden folder"

thanks for all the help. I have the .limewire folder, however there is no folder within this called preferences. Did you just mean delete the .limewire folder?

yes :)

And next time you open LW it will force you to reset your options. And it will create a fresh set of preferences. ;)

* However, since your prefs are in the old location, next time you will find them in the new location listed first in my previous post (but depends upon your version of LW you are using also.)

If that doesn't fix it then you will need to answer #2 in my previous post about system details. We are anonymous here so it's really no great deal I assure you. And we need those details to help us try to figure out what might be wrong.
