Problems Connecting

Hi all,

I've become increasingly tired of having to put up with the dreaded brick wall of Limewire that pops up occassionally. After trying to resolve this by doing an internet search, I came up with the following web page:

User Cant Connect - LimeWire

I found the following 2 suggestions:

Adding An Exception For The LimeWire Program
  1. Open the settings of your security program (usually by right-clicking the system tray icon)
  2. Locate a section for adding exceptions for specific programs
  3. Add LimeWire as an exception (C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe by default on Windows systems)
Adding An Exception For The Gnutella Port
  1. Within LimeWire, go to: Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewall Config, and make a note of the listening port located in the box next to "Listen on Port"
  2. Open the settings of your security program (usually by right-clicking the system tray icon)
  3. Locate a section for adding exceptions for specific ports
  4. Add the port specified in LimeWire's settings as an exception for both UDP and TCP, incoming and outgoing (also known as opening the port)
-----------------------

I did the first suggestion. It said that Norton had already made that exception. All programs for Limewire were allowed, too.

But I become stuck at the second suggestion. Mainly because it doesn't provide detailed steps for Norton Security Center. I'm worried that I'd do something wrong, so daren't configure anything! Is there anyone who could provide a step-by-step guide for Norton Security to do this?

Here are the required details for help as well. ANY help regarding how to get a connection is greatly appreciated!

1. OS version? Windows XP
2. What firewalls you have? Norton Internet Security turned on; Windows Firewall turned off.
3. How much ram? 512mb
4. Hard Disk space available? 106Gb originally (down to 51.2Gb)
5. Connection type? Broadband (well, it says broadband but we still have to 'dial-up')
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Sagem. There are an assortment of number on the back of the modem - 800 E3; 2806125EP707030; 251411098. Not sure what a router is.
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire: 4.12.6; JAVA: 1.6.0_01
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Tiscali
10. Do this simple test for us. What happens when you go there? It worked!
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? Do not understand! If you mean is there any other computers within the home using internet access, then no! And Limewire is the only P2P I use.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user? I've been using Limewire for over 6 months. Always had this problem. Not exactly a tech-minded person.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Sometimes I do. Sometimes not. When there is, status bar is always at 1. Usually when it is absent there is no general problem. But recently downloads have been slow even with it's at full with no brick wall.

14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? I don't know if I use a modem or a router? Do not understand.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Norton Security Center and Norton Anti-Virus
16. What country are you living in? England

danieeel,

For starters, Tiscali seem to be crap:( Check out these threads for more info:
I have found a solution to getting Limewire to work with Tiscali
Tiscali blocking Limewire
can't connect between 5pm-11pm
Tiscali & Limewire
Connection Problem - with Tiscali.co.uk

Check out these instructions for Norton, hopefully something will help.

That sagem modem doesn't seem to have a firewall. Are there any other boxes that plug into your computer for connection to the net?

You could also try updating your Java, some people had weird issues with 1.6.0_01. Try this latest update instead. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java before you install this one.

steve hodges,

Are you connected properly (how many green connection bars do you see)?
If your connection is ok, try this: Problems with the search

And if that's no help, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things.

If there's a connection problem, please give us your details.
