Connection problem, details inside

Alright, here's what happened. After 4 hours of trying to get this to work, I was able to get connected on the network. The thing is though, it was only working for about an hour before it decided to act dumb on me again.

let me tell you what I've got.

1. My OS is Windows Vista
2. I have McAfee firewall on, but I granted full access to limewire AND configured my opened port for remote access
Windows firewall is turned OFF. My firewall protection is OFF on my router
3. 894 RAM
4. 88.9 GB free disk space
5. DSL connection (Yahoo high-speed)
6. I'm using a Linksys router (WRT54GSV4)
7. Trying to connect from my house.
8. Limewire pro 4.14.0 / Java 1.6.0_02
9. AT&T Yahoo High speed Internet
10. My test worked: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/
11. I'm not sharing this with other p2p programs, but my internet connection is being shared.
12. Not my first time using limewire, but this is my first time i've encountered a problem, since I bought a new Computer that had windows vista.
13. Most of the time I see the brick wall, but when I connected it disapeared, I got disconnected, and it appeared again. (explained below)
14. I have UPnP enabled...I have a manual port opened on my linksys, in case UPnP doesn't work (wich it doesn't)
15. I have McAfee firewall on, but I granted full access to limewire AND configured my opened port for remote access
Windows firewall is turned OFF
16. USA

When I try to connect, the little globe indicates that I have a firewall. well, I've tried connecting using UPnP, but that never worked, so i tried the manual port. That wasn't working either. All of a sudden though, It connected to one of those "Ultrapeers" or something, I forgot the term. After a while, I connected to more "Ultrapeers" but that's it. No "peers" or "leafs." Anyways, when It connected, that globe indicated that there was no firewall. I managed to use limewire for a bit until it disconnected automatically. The little globe had a brick wall again. I wasn't able to connect anymore.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Many Vista users have had problems with LW & McAfee...have a read thru these.
Vista + McAfee 2007 + LimeWire = dropping connection

“No Compromise” Vista-McAfee-Limewire Solution

Can't Connect With VISTA!

When you set up port forwarding, did you set up a static IP address first?

What version of Java are you using?

Who is your ISP?

Have you tried any other p2p apps & if so, do they work properly?

If you're connected as a leaf, you'll connect to ultrapeers. If you're connected as an ultrapeer, then you'll connect to peers (other ultrapeers) & leafs.

thanks for posting these links, I'll check them out. I edited my post for this tread, it should have more info on it now.

umm...i don't think i have a static IP. Is that required for port fowarding?

lol. what happened to my first post? did it just disapear? darn it!

well, let me post it here since I can't see it anymore.

1. OS version: Windows Vista
2. What firewalls you have? Mcafee is turned on, but I granted full access to limewire and set up a port for remote access
3. 894 MB RAM
4. 88.9 GB of Free hard drive
5. Connection type: DSL
6. Linksys WRT54GSV4
7. Trying to connect from a house.
8. limewire 4.14.0 Pro / Java 1.6.0_02
9. AT&T Yahoo High speed internet
10. test worked: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/
11. My internet connection is shared, but I don't have other p2p applications
12. not my first time using limewire, but it is my first time having problems since upgrading to windows vista (buying a new computer)
13. I see a brick wall by the globe when i'm not connected, but when it did connect (for a few minutes), it disapeared. I got disconnected and never managed to connect again.
14. I have UPnP enabled, but that never managed to work, so I set up a manual port on my router
15. Mcafee and I made sure to grant full access to limewire. My windows firewall is turned OFF
16. USA

Your first post is still there:p

Yep, you'll need to have a static IP address set up before doing port forwarding. That's just a static IP that you set up on your computer...not one that your ISP provides;)

Here are good instructions for port forwarding for your router. A link to instructions for setting up a static IP is included in these (it's an orange link).

Just in case, you could also try this older version of Java - some people have had probs with the latest 2 Java updates! Download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before you install this one.

thanks birdy. I found a temporary fix from one of the links you provided me on your first response. Turns out, Mcafee isn't compatible with limewire when you have windows vista. for those of you who have the same problem as me, try this out.

To narrow down where the issue lies, could you try the following:

- click Start
- click Run
- type: services.msc
- click OK
- right-click on the McAfee Redirector service
- click Stop
- try LimeWire again to see if the issue still occurs

Note: don't forget to Start the service again after testing (or reboot the PC).

* MY Note: This is only a temporary fix, since you're basically turning Mcafee off. I stopped the McAfee redirecter service, booted up limewire, got a TURBO charged connection, Turned the McAfee redirecter service back ON, and the limewire connection is still present.

I guess I will have to use this technique from now on; that is, until someone could find a permanent fix.

Did you see the post about trying the McAfee 2008 Beta?
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/278483-post16.html

That might be worth a try (depends if you hate Betas I guess)?

I might just get Norton later on in the future. My mcafee subscription has been overdue and they keep bugging me to renew it.

If norton let's me connect to limewire without any hassles, i'll buy that one instead of renewing mcafee.
