Help! LW connects at uni, but there's a catch!
 

Hi,

I am using university internet and fortunately i can connect using limewire. However, we provided the IT department our laptops' physical address and was told that the server can shut down internet connection to a laptop if it finds that that laptop is trying to make too many connections. I am sorry for not explaining properly, but this is what I understood.

So, my question is, when using limewire to download files or torrents, how do i reduce the number of connections my limewire makes to other computers (from which i am downloading a file)? do i reduce the upload and download speed?

Do you have any suggestions?

Are you able to connect with LW at all? Most colleges & universities block or shape p2p programs nowadays. Oops missed your thread title.

Disable Ultrapeer capabilities for a start. Go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Performance & disable UP.

For uploads & download slots, keep them limited but not at zero else that will affect your performance. Bittorrent settings are 4 & 6 for uplds & downlds. You may wish to halve this. I am not sure if that will affect b.t. performance or not.

I can download at an unlimited speed. but i am keeping it at 60kbps. i really have no idea that at what speed i take up too much bandwidth?

Someone else may have some suggestions. I am not big on using bt's. But at least not being a UP will prevent many connections from gnutella users using you to help to connect to the network. ;) You'll be connecting with 3-5 UP's. Not connecting with 15-30 peers as would be the case if you were an UP.

It may also be worth closing off old search boxes periodically. They tend to go a little stale after a while anyway as people come & go from the network.

will disabling mojito DHT capabilities and TLS help? will it stop other users from making connections to my computer or vice versa?

I guess i cant use torrents at all in limewire since, i'll be uploading at the same time i'm downloading and I dont want my uni to find out that i am uploading. am i right when i say that?

when i am downloading a file from 10 hosts (for example), then it means that i am making 10 connections to 10 different pc's and i will get faster downloads, thus taking up bandwidth and slowing down the network?

what is better? downloading from 10 hosts at 100kbps or from 1 host at 100kbps? is there anyway of limiting the number of hosts u download from, for example, limiting it to not more than 5?

i am noob regarding this and thats why i'm asking all these questions. sorry about that, but it will really help me if i can get the answers.

Not only are your questions interesting, they are also unique, I cannot remember coming across any post before that has asked about limiting their connection.

That said, I think I may be able to suggest a few things:

1) Do not share your shared folder, if other P2P users cannot share your files they cannot download from you and so saving on bandwidth usage. Mind you, this is very anti-P2P and you could be labelled a "freeloader".

2) Only do your downloads at certain times, e.g. between say midnight and 4am. That way your usage of the Uni's bandwidth is hardly likely to upset anyone if noticed.

3) Likewise, don't use LW during the day when most students will be using the Uni's internet system.

4) If you must use LW during the day then try to only download "5" or less files at a time, most of us usually set up 10 or more to download in one go, but since you want to stay under the "radar" you will need to use the "small amounts" approach.

Mind you, none of the above suggestions will mean anything if your Uni decides to install "bandwidth throttling" equipment, and as LOTR said most colleges and Universities have already done so.
