Firewall problem

Limewire 4.12 wont load up saying it detects a firewall but I have shut down both my firewalls (Windows and ZoneAlarm.) Any suggestions anyone? Thanks.

This is getting redicilious

I am at a point where I just want to rip this LM Pro out of my machine and throw away the money I just paid for it. There is no reason why there should be this much tweeking on the purchaser's part in order to get the program to run. The old version ran without any problem on my XP machine. Maybe it is Vista that is causing the problem but I was told my version is Vista compliant.
I should know better than to purchase from a company that has no telephone tech support, we are all not computer Guru's. Since there is a no refund policy I guess I can just kiss my $25 goodbye.

wondering why October 17th, 2007 01:47 PM

I totally agree with you...We don't work for limewire, we are just voluteers that know a fix or two to help users get up and running...

That being said and now that I know your a Vista user do this....(as strange as it might sound, it has worked for many)...

Uninstall Limewire and ZoneAlarm...Then re-installl limewire and then ZoneAlarm, in that order...;)
When you do the re-install of ZoneAlarm make sure to allow Limewire...

Snookie1231 October 17th, 2007 05:27 PM

Wondering Why, I appreciate your help but nothing seems to work. I just did as you suggested and removed both LW and ZoneAlarmSecurity using the control panel, then reinstalled and rebooted as you suggested.... still shows LW "Limewire has detected a firewall," and is stuck on the first bar of loading....

Limewire need to be uninstalled using the uninstaller which is found...
Start > All Programs > Limewire...

It sounds like your problem may also lay within your modem/router many of them have built in Nat Firewalls, so you will probably need to Port Forward...
If you want to give that ago just let me know the make and model number for your modem/router and I will find your instructions on doing this...;)

Snookie1231 October 18th, 2007 03:34 PM

I dont have a router, actually its a 4-port hub. I used to have 3 computers and a video device for the deaf (my daughter is hearing impaired,) but I am currently only using one (1) wire out of the hub, into my computer. Nothing else connected and the hub does NOT have a firewall. Thanks anyway.
This is really frustrating because I had the old LM on my old computer which ran without a hitch. Now I paid for the PRO model and cant get it to run at all. Hope you have a good weekend.

About at the end of my rope...

have still be trying to get on line. LM Pro keeps saying it detects a firewall. I have disable my Zone Alarm Security program, turn off the Firewall in Vista and have no other firewall on my computer.
I have even unchecked ALL the programs in start up under the msconfig command, rebooted and it STILL says it detects a firewall. Just spent an hour with HP (my computer brand) and they cant solve it either. I downloaded the Pro version onto a XP operating system computer and it started right up AND that one even had Zone Alarm Pro firewall turned ON.
What is the problem with getting it to run on this Vista computer??? Thanks for any assistance. I think LM should have a tech support number where you can speak to a specialist...

Xp and ZoneAlarm don't have the same problem as Vista and ZoneAlarm...

I think your going to have to supply these details, so I can take a better look at what is going on...

Snookie1231 October 22nd, 2007 07:14 AM

I have following all instructions from tech support in deleting LW and Java and reinstalling per their instructions and it STILL says it detects a firewall. I have no firewall running. Here are the answers to questions you asked for:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Vista Home Premium
2. What firewalls you have? Zone Alarm Secuity program but I have given LM permission AND I have shut the program down completely.
3. How much ram? 2 MB
4. Hard Disk space available? Over 400GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) I connect via cable modem
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorols Surfboard SBV5120
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? From my home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LM is 4.14.10 Pro and Java is 1.6.0_03
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Cablevision of NJ
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It works, says Your Test Worked.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. I am not sharing with any other computers.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I have had the old Limewire for over a year and had no problems with the installation or the running of the program. My computer crashed and bought a new one that now has Vista instead of XP.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Yes, Yes, thats the damn problem... Ha.
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...lies/smile.gif Only Zone Alarm Security which is Vista compliant.
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). U.S.A.

Thanks for any help.

Check this thread http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...on-worked.html
Make sure Vista's firewall is disabled. Running two firewalls will result in clashes & unreliable results like you have & also result in less security, not more.

Not sure about your model of Motorola, but if you are able to log into it, then ensure UPnP is enabled. In your browser, put in either http://192.168.100.1 _ or _ http://192.168.10.1 _ or _ http://192.168.1.1 ___ (depends on model)
By default the username is admin, and the password is either admin or motorola
Check to be sure UPnP is enabled if your device is log-in capable or has UPnP abilities.

I notice your ISP is CableVision. They are known for causing problems with p2p users. But hopefully your not on their target or you are in one of their regions they do not apply such approaches.

Snookie1231 October 22nd, 2007 08:25 AM

No - Vista's firewall is definately OFF. I called my Cable/modem company and they do not have a firewall attached to the modem and they allow pnp, they do not block any ports other than 25.
I will try the link you sent from Blackbear and see if that helps. I appreciate your time and effort on this. this is what LM had me do, no success:
Please do the following in order to perform a clean reinstallation of
LimeWire PRO:

1 - Completely shut down LimeWire, including in the taskbar and system tray
(the system tray is located in the bottom-right corner of the screen,
usually next to the time; you may need to expand it by clicking the left
arrow button).

2 - Uninstall all previous installations of LimeWire and Java Runtime
Environment from Add/Remove programs (go to: Start > Control Panel >
Uninstall a program).

3 - Delete all LimeWire icons and installers from your computer (you may
find some on your desktop).

4 - Right-click the Start menu, then select Explore. Using the folder tree
on the left side, navigate to the following directories, and delete them
where found (you can right-click the folder and select Delete):
C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire (where username is the name you
use to log on to Windows)
C:\Users\(username)\Incomplete (this will delete any partial downloads that
were in progress)
C:\Program Files\LimeWire
NOTE: If you can't find these folders, go to Organize > Folder and Search
Options > View, then select Show Hidden Files.

5 - Restart your computer.

6 - Visit:

http://www.limewire.com/javabuttond

to re-download and install the JRE (Manual Download > Offline Installation).

7 - Go back to the PRO download page, using the download link that was
emailed to you on the date of your purchase, and download the Windows
installer. Click *Run*. If you have problems when selecting *Run*, save
the LimeWire PRO installer to your hard drive, and then run the installer
from its saved location.

If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this email, and please
include the message history in your response. If you are using an email
client that does not automatically include the message history (such as AOL
or CompuServe), please copy and paste the message history into your
response.

I did all the above.....still no luck. Have a great Monday.

Lord of the Rings October 22nd, 2007 08:35 AM

Tuesday started already for me. lol :D
Um ... about calling isp's, they usually won't tell you if they are blocking ports or shaping/blocking p2p apps. You might strike it lucky with one of their techs, but usually they won't tell you because it's their policy not to or else they themselves don't know. People at front desks who answer calls definitely won't know.

Blocking ports is what CableVision do do in some but not all of their areas of control. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Firewalls & change the listening port to 64049 or 50012 (try both) & press apply. See if that helps. You can also go to Tools>Options>Connections & disable Connect on start up. Then close LW, open again, wait a few mins, check the listening port is the same as you put in, then go to File menu -> Connect.

BTW did you try temporarily dissabling ZoneAlarm to see if it made any difference. Just to try to narrow down where the problem might be. Doh, oops you did try that earlier. But try no firewalls at all to see if that makes a difference, only temporarily.

You could try another program to see if you can at least connect. I'd recommend Phex to see if you have the same problems. However again, you may need to add a separate firewall rule specifically for phex.

Snookie1231 October 22nd, 2007 09:03 AM

Wow - where are you located Lord of the Rings?? Obviously in a different time zone..... Ha.
Well, I went to LM's menu bar and under Options, advanced, firewall configuration - I tried to change the listening port to 64049 and/or 50012, said both ports were unavailable.
I unchecked "Connect on start" and tried that way but as soon as LW opened I saw the brick wall and knew it was still detecting a firewall.
Yes, I have turned off (for the time being anyway) both my firewalls, Vista and Zone Alarm Security.

Ports unavailable yet your software firewall is off? wow ... sounds like your connection device or something of the kind has internal NAT or similar firewall. Did you try logging into your Motorola?

Also, search UPnP or Universal Plug on your computer & see if you can find anything. If yes, try opening it & seeing if it is enabled or disabled. UPnP should be enabled.

The ports I suggested are usually the last ones any ISP will block.

BTW I am from same country as Wondering Why. ;) I just keep strange hours. lol :D

Snookie1231 October 22nd, 2007 10:56 AM

The only thing that seems out of place is just above my task bar it says "Internet - Protected Mode: On. I dbld clicked and lowered security down to minimum, still doesnt work. Thanks for all your help but I think I bothered you enough...
I'll just chalk it up to experience and throw another 160GB in my old XP computer (plus it has a 500GB secondary HD) and use Limewire on that computer.
Thanks for all your help and have a great week.
Ciao,

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...ion-works.html

Did you check your Connection device? Did you try logging into it?

We are happy to help ... & if we can help you solve your problem then we will feel better. lol :D

Also, try Phex as I suggested earlier. :)
