limewire enabling (can't connect)

I can not get my limewire to connect. It says it detected a firewall, but Ive done about everything I can think of. I have a wireless router made by Netgear, ISP is Mediacom. I did that test that it says to do and it says that it passed. All it says is that Limewire is enabling. I have the newest free version of Limewire. I did all of that plug and play nonsense, but that doesnt work, and I looked for the exception and it says that its allowed. My security is not on and it still says windows has detected a firewall. No clue whats going on. Can anyone help? thanks!

You both need to click on the blue 'system details' link in WW's post & answer as many of those questions as you can:blink:

Hi antgal23,

Make sure that the XP firewall's allowing LW.
User Cant Connect - LimeWire

Next, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

Some people have had connection problems with the Java version that you have. You can either try updating to the latest version here (I have this one & LW's working fine): Java SE Downloads
or try this older version, which has worked well for lots of people: Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11
Whichever Java version you use, download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before installing another one.

What's the model of your Speedtouch (it may have it's own firewall)?

antgal23 October 29th, 2007 12:25 PM

Speedtouch version

hi

my version of speedtouch is SSID:B98774

antgal23 October 29th, 2007 12:29 PM

Preferences?????????

Hi Birdy,

You told me to delete LWs folder in Preferences but where is Preferences?

antgal23 October 29th, 2007 12:56 PM

The Fixes

tried all the fixes but no joy. Pretty sure Ifollowed all the steps but feck all progress.

any more tips mate?

birdy October 29th, 2007 08:13 PM

Did you find the preferences folder? Remember that LW has to be completely closed before deleting that folder. Did you look for a folder in the old location (C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire) as well? If you deleted the prefs folder properly, all of your LW options would've reverted back to default;)

Have another look on the Speedtouch for a model number...something like 580, 545, 510 etc. Once you've found the model, go to this page & find your router model.
PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall
Then choose LimeWire from the program list...then you'll find instructions for port forwarding. Give that a try. Don't forget to set up a static IP address first (there's info about static IP within the port forwarding instructions).

LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router should all be the same number.

Vista solution on hp comp wired, an hp laptop(wireless), worked for both
ok I had the same problem an everything seemed to not work, until I deleted the newest version of java 6, I searched my comp for all remaining java files an deleted them, I then installed older java thru the link posted 5.0 11,deleted limewire completely thru uninstall an search, then go to limewire an download, limewire basic, when basic installs you will see it install java files n it take a few min to complete, then once it is finished, completely close limewire, making sure icon is not runnin by clock, due to lime default settings, jus cuz ya click x, it doesnt shutdown completley unless u set it under LW settings, an if not sure run task manager, cntrl alt del, make sure it not runnin in the processes tab, right click on LW icon go to properties then compatibility, make sure the box is clicked,,, run this program in compatibility mode for, an select windows xp, service pack 2..select apply then ok, then run lime, it connects fine,,,if u want lime pro then unistall basic thru add/remove dont search for remainin files an install pro, but note thru my trial an error if u install pro first when it installin i noticed it doesnt install java jar files, an will not connect, only by runnin lime basic first did it install the java jar.... not sure y that is but, i reinstalled my pro an works like champ everytime even on comp restarts it turbo connected hope this helps someone peace...i didnt edit the firewall pref in LW I left in default use pnp, also note my isp is mediacom as well an use norton 2008

My LW will not connect... It worked fine until I downloaded the updated version 4.14.10. What is the deal?

birdy October 30th, 2007 06:27 PM

First thing to try is delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).

In case you're using Vista: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista

If that doesn't help, you'll need to give us a few details.
System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

Hi Curtgruber

I had this same problem and I fixed by:-
[1] Uninstall the old version before installing the new -- delete the old LW folders from the Programs directory before installing the new version
[2] Ensure that you have java script J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 (Jre ver 5) if not download from here:-

Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

* Uninstall Limewire by using LW uninstall program not the add/remove control panel
start -> all Programs -> Limewire -> Uninstall

Hope this helps -- please let us know -- Thanx

8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ Click to see Sample image
*It's very important that you tell us whether you're using LW 5*

USing limewire 5.0.11

I updated my limewire.

Lord of the Rings February 2nd, 2009 12:18 PM

May I ask which model of Westell Wirespeed (it should have a model number)? Reason I ask is Westell modems & routers do not utilise UPnP at all well. And not all Westell devices that have NAT abilities even have UPnP implementation.

Which model of Bufalo router?

I suggest starting here:
1. You will have Vista's firewall on your computer, make sure LW is allowed in it's firewall rules. :) Setting up an exception for LimeWire in your software firewall (click in link). If it's already listed, you may need to remove that firewall rule & add a fresh one. Perhaps the old LW listing is not applicable to the newer LW 5 version whilst it's using Java 6 (1.6).

2. If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link)
