Default Beyond frustrated here and still only 1 bar

Hey Birdy,

I thank you for your help. You say "Did you make sure that LW was properly closed when you deleted the preferences folder & also when you replaced the gnutella.net file?"

What and where is the gnutella.net file? I have not seen any reference to this anywhere else.

I am pretty sure I am going to give up on Limewire. The internet and music should be a FUN place to be...

Limewire is nothing but frustration and anger.

Macaffee keeps autmatically updating my firewall with new downloads... so that is not going to change.

I tried removing the old java and installing the Java 1.5 - as I was told to do.... what happened? Limewire would not open with 1.5 ERROR and said it needed 5.0 or higher to even open.

I did all the steps, jumped through the hoops. Unistalled, reinstalled and what happened.... NOTHING> >>>>>>> I still have one bar and cannot sign on to limewire.

Does limewire have a phone number for me to talk to a live human? Obviously I am not able to get back online. LOL

Does anyone have a completely different site for me to look at?

I surrender. I think it is best I just give up.

Limewire.... after working on this for more then 10 hours I am just more angry.

I posted this link earlier: all of a sudden will not connect (a fix to try)
& when you said you'd tried everything, I assumed you'd tied all the fixes in that link (including deleting the prefs folder & replacing the gnutella.net file).

It's up to you whether you want to try those fixes or not

There's no live LW support. Pro users have access to email support but that's not live & I doubt they'd be able to help you more than we can here, anyway.

Default For Birdy One bar Lou here.

Did you make sure that LW was properly closed when you deleted the preferences folder & also when you replaced the gnutella.net file? gnutella.net

Please understand I am not an IT specialist.

How do I delete the preferences folder?

How do I located the gnutell.net file?

Once found, how do I delete the gnutella.net file.

Once deleted, how do I replace it?

Thanks for your help.

I read you link thank you.

I may need a very basic, super basic step by step process on how to somehow be able to connect with more then one bar.

Thanks for your help!

"birdy" is correct. All I had to do was sort out the Java versions.

I quickly found this thread after having exactly these issues. I knew it was not a FW issue because other PCs in the house all work fine behind the same FW. All I did was uninstall ALL older versions of JAVA in the add/remove programs of the control panel. I ended up with version 6 release 3, the latest and I am now back in the game.

Many Thanks birdy!

Wow, I've been trying to do everything you've said, and I still can't get more than one bar... in fact, Limewire won't even open now. It has the loading window and nothing happens. Did I delete something I wasn't supposed to? What WAS I supposed to delete? The .limewire one or the preferences one?

Lou88888888,

Since the older Java didn't do the trick for you, try using the very latest update instead. Go to this site & downoad the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) offline installer.
Java SE Downloads

Don't install the new Java yet.
Once that installer is downloaded to your computer, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs & remove any Java versions that you have there. Restart your computer.

Now install the Java version that you've just downloaded. Once that's installed, restart your computer again.

Deleting LW's preferences folder will change all of the settings within LW's options (speed, max number of downloads, down/upload bandwidth etc etc). If you're not too sure of your settings, go to LW's tools > options & make a note of how everything's set, so that you can reset things later.

You might have 2 preferences folders - one named .limewire & one named LimeWire. Sometimes there are 2 folders, because different versions of LW have the folder in different locations.

1. Make sure that LW is closed properly by opening task manager (ctrl/alt/del) & see if there's a LW process running. If there is, end that process.

2. Go to Control Panel, double click on Folder Options & then click on the View tab. Make sure there's a dot in the radio button next to 'Show hidden files and folders' then click Apply & click OK.

3. Now go to Start > click on My Computer > double click on C drive > double click on the folder with your username. Once you're in the 'your username' folder, look for a folder named .limewire & if you have a folder named .limewire, delete that whole folder. If you don't have a folder named .limewire then that's ok. Close all windows that you have open.

4. Go back to Start > click on My Computer > double click on C drive > double click on Documents and Settings > double click on the folder with your username > double click on Application Data. Once you're in the Application Data, look for a folder named LimeWire (there's no dot in front of this one & the letters aren't all lower case). Delete that whole folder named LimeWire. Close all windows that you have open.

5. Restart your computer. This isn't always necessary, but just to be on the safe side...do it now anyway.

6. Start up LW & see whether it will connect. If LW connects, you're all done & you can go back through tools > options & set everything there to the way you like it.

7. If LW still isn't connecting after about 10 minutes, close LW & check in task manager to make sure that it's properly closed. Click on this link zSHARE - gnutella.net That will take you to a file hosting site, where you can download a file named gnutella.net...download this file & save it to your computer. Remember where you saved the file to.

8. Go back to Start > My computer > C drive > Application Data. find the folder named LimeWire & double click on this LimeWire folder to open it. This is the folder that you deleted previously....when LW is started, a new LimeWire folder is created. Once you're inside the LimeWire folder, look for a file named gnutella.net (or it might be named gnutella). Once you've found the file named gnutella.net (or gnutella), delete that file. Don't close any windows, just leave the folder that you're in open.

9. Now find the gnutella.net file that you just downloaded. Copy that & paste it into that LimeWire folder that you have open. You deleted the old gnutella.net file & now you're replacing it with another one. When you've pasted the gnutella.net file into the folder, close all windows that you have open.

10. Restart your computer & then start LW.

queso13,

These steps should help you as well. I don't know if you deleted or changed any Java versions, but try using the latest Java update anyway. Just follow the advice I gave to Lou88888888.

This sounds like a novel, instructions I appreciate, sounds like a glitch within limewire. It should be automatic.
