One bar, connection problems HELP! Limewire was working perfectly. Now the connection quality is at one bar. "Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network" I get NO results. I am running on Windows XP. Mcaffee is my security system. How the heck to I get back and connected? Your help is appreciated. |
I'm having trouble as well!!! I cannot connect as well, It says currently connecting to network and does not ever give me the "your signail is very stong" like it used to. Ive tried connecting and disconnecting over and over again. Can ANYONE HELP!!! Or is this Limewires way of getting me to upgrade! What is realy going on?:confused: |
guitarslinger7- Thanks for your post. I am not alone. If we upgrade and get Pro will our problems be solved? Heck it is worth the $13.95.... they lower the price on a second screen, after I say NO one time. Lou |
Same thing is happening to me :( Grrr it's killing me :mad2: |
also one bar connection After an update I cannot have a connection with the network. I 've done a lot of things, nothings helps. Who's helping me???? |
All of you, try the advice here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-fix-try.html Start off by deleting LW's preferences folder & changing Java versions. In case you have Vista, things are a bit different to XP when finding the preferences folder & other files/folders within Application Data. This thread should help with that: LimeWire Pref Folder in Vista If nothing there helps, please give us your details. System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!! |
Still at one bar I have tried everything. I deleted and reloaded Java. I checked my firewall. Is this a scam by limewire to get me to upgrade to limewire pro? If I pay the $13.95 for pro, will I be able to connect. This is beyond frustrating. I was surfing on limewire and now I AM STILL STUCK AT ONE BAR CONNECTION. Please let me know if I pay, will it work correctly? thanks Lou |
One bar me too.... Ive tried everything.... so frustrating... |
Lou88888888, Which version of Java did you try...the latest update, or the older archived version? Did you remove all existing Java versions before installing another one? After you deleted the preferences folder & started LW, did you have to go through the LW setup wizard again? Did you also look for a preferences folder in the old location of C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire (not a hidden folder)? Did you make sure that LW was properly closed when you deleted the preferences folder & also when you replaced the gnutella.net file? Did you also try uninstalling LW, reinstalling & then relpacing the gnutella.net file (as raffles did in the thread I linked to)? If you reinstall LW, make sure to use the offline installer. When you click to download LW, cancel the dialog box which pops up & use the option to download the offline installer. To uninstall LW, go start > all programs > limewire > uninstall. Don't uninstall via add/remove programs. If basic LW isn't working, don't buy Pro!! |
Beyond frustrated here and still only 1 bar Hey Birdy, I thank you for your help. You say "Did you make sure that LW was properly closed when you deleted the preferences folder & also when you replaced the gnutella.net file?" What and where is the gnutella.net file? I have not seen any reference to this anywhere else. I am pretty sure I am going to give up on Limewire. The internet and music should be a FUN place to be... Limewire is nothing but frustration and anger. Macaffee keeps autmatically updating my firewall with new downloads... so that is not going to change. I tried removing the old java and installing the Java 1.5 - as I was told to do.... what happened? Limewire would not open with 1.5 ERROR and said it needed 5.0 or higher to even open. I did all the steps, jumped through the hoops. Unistalled, reinstalled and what happened.... NOTHING> >>>>>>> I still have one bar and cannot sign on to limewire. Does limewire have a phone number for me to talk to a live human? Obviously I am not able to get back online. LOL Does anyone have a completely different site for me to look at? I surrender. I think it is best I just give up. Limewire.... after working on this for more then 10 hours I am just more angry. |
I posted this link earlier: all of a sudden will not connect (a fix to try) & when you said you'd tried everything, I assumed you'd tied all the fixes in that link (including deleting the prefs folder & replacing the gnutella.net file). It's up to you whether you want to try those fixes or not:) There's no live LW support. Pro users have access to email support but that's not live & I doubt they'd be able to help you more than we can here, anyway. |
For Birdy One bar Lou here. Did you make sure that LW was properly closed when you deleted the preferences folder & also when you replaced the gnutella.net file? gnutella.net Please understand I am not an IT specialist. How do I delete the preferences folder? How do I located the gnutell.net file? Once found, how do I delete the gnutella.net file. Once deleted, how do I replace it? Thanks for your help. I read you link thank you. I may need a very basic, super basic step by step process on how to somehow be able to connect with more then one bar. Thanks for your help! |
"birdy" is correct. All I had to do was sort out the Java versions. I quickly found this thread after having exactly these issues. I knew it was not a FW issue because other PCs in the house all work fine behind the same FW. All I did was uninstall ALL older versions of JAVA in the add/remove programs of the control panel. I ended up with version 6 release 3, the latest and I am now back in the game. Many Thanks birdy! |
Wow, I've been trying to do everything you've said, and I still can't get more than one bar... in fact, Limewire won't even open now. It has the loading window and nothing happens. Did I delete something I wasn't supposed to? What WAS I supposed to delete? The .limewire one or the preferences one? |
Lou88888888, Since the older Java didn't do the trick for you, try using the very latest update instead. Go to this site & downoad the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) offline installer. Java SE Downloads Don't install the new Java yet. Once that installer is downloaded to your computer, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs & remove any Java versions that you have there. Restart your computer. Now install the Java version that you've just downloaded. Once that's installed, restart your computer again. Deleting LW's preferences folder will change all of the settings within LW's options (speed, max number of downloads, down/upload bandwidth etc etc). If you're not too sure of your settings, go to LW's tools > options & make a note of how everything's set, so that you can reset things later. You might have 2 preferences folders - one named .limewire & one named LimeWire. Sometimes there are 2 folders, because different versions of LW have the folder in different locations. 1. Make sure that LW is closed properly by opening task manager (ctrl/alt/del) & see if there's a LW process running. If there is, end that process. 2. Go to Control Panel, double click on Folder Options & then click on the View tab. Make sure there's a dot in the radio button next to 'Show hidden files and folders' then click Apply & click OK. 3. Now go to Start > click on My Computer > double click on C drive > double click on the folder with your username. Once you're in the 'your username' folder, look for a folder named .limewire & if you have a folder named .limewire, delete that whole folder. If you don't have a folder named .limewire then that's ok. Close all windows that you have open. 4. Go back to Start > click on My Computer > double click on C drive > double click on Documents and Settings > double click on the folder with your username > double click on Application Data. Once you're in the Application Data, look for a folder named LimeWire (there's no dot in front of this one & the letters aren't all lower case). Delete that whole folder named LimeWire. Close all windows that you have open. 5. Restart your computer. This isn't always necessary, but just to be on the safe side...do it now anyway. 6. Start up LW & see whether it will connect. If LW connects, you're all done & you can go back through tools > options & set everything there to the way you like it. 7. If LW still isn't connecting after about 10 minutes, close LW & check in task manager to make sure that it's properly closed. Click on this link zSHARE - gnutella.net That will take you to a file hosting site, where you can download a file named gnutella.net...download this file & save it to your computer. Remember where you saved the file to. 8. Go back to Start > My computer > C drive > Application Data. find the folder named LimeWire & double click on this LimeWire folder to open it. This is the folder that you deleted previously....when LW is started, a new LimeWire folder is created. Once you're inside the LimeWire folder, look for a file named gnutella.net (or it might be named gnutella). Once you've found the file named gnutella.net (or gnutella), delete that file. Don't close any windows, just leave the folder that you're in open. 9. Now find the gnutella.net file that you just downloaded. Copy that & paste it into that LimeWire folder that you have open. You deleted the old gnutella.net file & now you're replacing it with another one. When you've pasted the gnutella.net file into the folder, close all windows that you have open. 10. Restart your computer & then start LW. queso13, These steps should help you as well. I don't know if you deleted or changed any Java versions, but try using the latest Java update anyway. Just follow the advice I gave to Lou88888888. |
i updated java.... worked for 1 hour and stoped working again |
It worked ! Thank you, thank you Birdy !! No one, I mean no one from Limewire could figure this out, but you did! :xirokrotima: WTG !! :xeri_ok1ani: I have been fighting this problem for days, that's for ending my frustration:bangh: !! HUGS , Debbles |

It Worked ! |
I have the exact same problem. when i bought LimeWire Pro for $14.99 on September 18, 2007, i never had problems at all. now for the past week i have the one bar starting connection,so, i emailed help desk and got no reply. I thought it was a firewall or a java problem, not so.I tried everything even switching ports.., nothing. I paid $14.99 for this? I have alot more songs to download. HELP Me?! |
Read this thread from the beginning & try the fixes suggested. Where did you buy Pro from? The only official site for downloading either version of LW is Lime Wire » Official Website & Free Download, BitTorrent « Pro costs $21.95 for 6 months worth of free updates & email support, or $34.95 for a year's worth:confused: |
I am sorry i did pay $21.95. i was up grading a game i have, that was 6 weeks ago , it cost $14.99. I got Limewire Pro from the official website. i tried to see if it was java and download the latest version, nothing. i even disabled BitDefender Antivirus-Antispyware and Windows Fire wall, still nothing. I had LimeWire working with no problems, didn't have to disable anything. I tried everything that is conceivable except throwing the computer out the window. I have to be at work by 7am, but be home by 4:15pm. |
Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am perplexed..., I tried every suggestion that had been posted. so, I uninstalled and reinstalled 2X's, i uninstalled Java JRE and installed an earlier version..., nothing. I uninstalled LWPRO and reinstalled it., (everytime i uninstall & reinstall, i always reboot my computer). So, I uninstall the earlier version of JAVA JRE and installed an updated version JAVA JRE. Still no connection, disconnect Firewall, nothing. I have a feeling this is a scam. I am suppose to get 6 months of tech support, but when i wrote to tech support to tell them the problem a few weeks ago, i got no reply back. I am fed up with LMPRO, so, I uninstalled it and don't want to bother ever again. I am sorry that i wasted my money on this. |
YAHOOO I am back online :xirokrotima: :xirokrotima: :xirokrotima: :xirokrotima: :xirokrotima: Thanks to Birdy. I give you the clap. LOL If I can back on Limewire YOU can too. it workedd! the gnutella.net thing actually worked!!! thank you so much birdy |
This sounds like a novel, instructions I appreciate, sounds like a glitch within limewire. It should be automatic. |
Reconnection instructions thanks to Birdy I reconnected with the above directions. My searches and downloads are all faster now too. Lou  |
Great news!!! I have been down for about 3 weeks and changed the gnutella.net in my Limewire as it is suggested and it worked!!! I did the first attempt but it didn't work so I did that and it did. |
I have Windows XP, limewie version 4.12.11, java versions in my add/remove prgrams fodler include J2SE 5.0 update 10, update 11, update 5, update 6, update 8, update 9, Java runtime SE 1.4.a_03 and Java access bridge, JAva update 3. I have DSl modem,, ISP is ATT, test worked, do I delte all teh JAVA's excpet the update 11 or delete everythign that says Java and reinstall the update 11? I have limewire pro, paid for it, if I delete it do I have to pay for it all over again? So an offline installer means save it to my computer and then install later, correct? Downloaded the gutnella file for when I am ready to go through this whole thing. I am confused mostly by the Java since it seems I have so many updates...not sure what I need or if I can delete some or all. |

Thanks for all this advise....I too was suffering the loss of connection strength after applying the new upgrade. The simple answer was to uninstall limewire completely and then go to the limewire homesite, download to a folder, and then re-install it. The gnutella file followed along on it's own. Thanks again........Maxx |
EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!! To solve most of these one bar connection problems, just uninstall your version of Java and install the latest version of Java. This works. Don't worry about messing around with files that might end up in tragedy when you cant get everything back the way it was. Just install the latest version of Java. It won't mess with your files or anything like that.(I have an iPod that inhabits almost 800 files, there's not way I could delete everything and start over, so I get everyone's desperation completely) I really really really hope this helps everyone. Don't worry with looking through folders and files that probably aren't even 1% of the problem. If you've indeed tried this and there is still no hope, I totally can't help you. I think it's ridiculous that you have to've paid a lot of money to get any kind of tech support, but if it wasn't for someone named Birdy who helped me out and saved my sanity from total annihilation, I wouldn't be able to pass on this awesome knowledge. ~Dramatic bow~ Again, I hope this helps. :D |
