Limewire Pro 4.8 has suddenly stopped connecting Hello. I am new to this forum and would be grateful for some advice. My copy of 4.8 pro has been working fine for a good couple of years until yesterday, when it refused to connect. This has continued today and is very frustrating. The status of most of my downloads says "need more sources" and a couple say "waiting for stable connections". I have one small green bar and four red bars and it says "connecting". My internet works fine and I cannot think of anything that I have changed which could have caused this. I am using windows XP. Anyone have an idea as to why this may happen and whay I could do? |
Update your Java. Use the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions from your computer before you install the new one. Java SE Downloads Close LW. Check in Task Manager to see whether it's completely closed. If a LW process is running, end the process. Now delete LW's preferences folder, found here C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire. Start LW & see if it connects. If it doesn't connect, go here & download this file called gnutella.net & save it to your computer. zSHARE - gnutella.net Close LW. Go back to C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire, now open the .limewire folder. Inside that folder, you'll see a file named gnutella.net (or it might be named gnutella). Delete that file. Copy & paste the file you downloaded into the .limewire folder (so it replaces the file that you've just deleted). Close all the windows that you have open, start LW & see whether it connects. Anybody else reading this, it won't work if you're using a new or newish version of LW. Rigsby67 has a very old LW. If you have a newer version of LW, read the advice here. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-fix-try.html Or here. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post296950 |
Many thanks for the advice Birdy. I shall try it this evening. One more question before I do... With the process you have described, is there any risk of losing my current downloads? I have a number that are tantalisingly close to 100% and have taken a long time to get there. Thanks in advance |
To be on the safe side, back up your incomplete folder (that contains the downloads.dat & downloads.bak files). By default, the location is C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Incomplete. Your Incomplete folder will be close to where your saved folder is...if your saved folder is C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Shared, then the Incomplete folder will 'follow' that & be in C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Incomplete. Back that folder up when LW's closed. If anything awful happens, you can replace LW's incomplete folder with the one you've backed up. Only replace the Incomplete folder when LW's properly closed. |
Hello again. I'm afraid I have stumbled at the first hurdle because I am not sure how to remove other java versions from my computer. I did a search in my computer for java and loads of things came up. I think I might need a bit more spoonfeeding!!! Thanks in advance Rigsby67 |
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. From there, you can remove any Java versions:) After you've removed the versions that you don't want, restart your computer. |
All working fine again! Birdy you are a star!!! THANK YOU!!!!! |
Ok.....it worked for nearly 24 hours and has now reverted to its previous behaviour. Sooooo frustrating. Any further things I can try? Many thanks in advance. |
I just downloaded that gnutella file again and used it to replaced the one in my limewire folder. Now it works fine. Maybe I'll have to keep doing this. |
