help pleasefirewall question Hi I have been a long term LW user and I have recently had to replace my mother board and HDD due to some problems I had and now I cannot connect to LW. I was able to do so prior to the rebuild and have not changed my anti-virus or modem or ISP. I have checked that I have the exceptions are right and have tried the Java,, remove .limewire file etc. and still no LW. I have the bricks in front of the globe even though Norton has LW as set to allow and windows firewall is disabled. I am not too sure about my system configurations as I am better at driving this thing than quoting the specs :) Please help!! Craig |
OK Klassik It's obvious something has changed and change is now giving you the sypthoms you're experiencing, so lets go for the blunderbust approach and try the following links:- http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...tml#post115445 PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall Replacement Gnetella.net File UK Bob |
I have tried the first and third options there with no success, That second one is very confusing. I got lost almost straight away. I dont understand what I am supposed to do there? I think it will be easier to forget all about it, I was enjoying downloading from LW too, Bloody computers :( |
I had another look over the second link there and I have absolutely no idea what any of it means. Is this the only way to fix this problem because I only have my antivirus firewall and xp firewall and when both are disabled, I still have the firewall icon in LW? Craig |
Craig Port Forwarding is only necessary if you have a modem router (modem with a built in router) or a router. You see, routers have a built-in firewall and, in most cases, the only way a P2P app can find it's way through a router is via this "port forwarding" configuration exercise. Unfortunately, I don't know of any "Jack and Jill" type instructions or guides that can teach you about "port forwarding". All I can really suggest is that you contact your modem-router's (or router's) help desk and ask if they have any user-guides you can download on "port forwarding". Good Luck. UK Bob |
I used to use a modem router before I went with cable, now using a motorola sbg900 wireless. So it probably wont fix my problem altering the port forwarding option. So now that should not be the problem anyway because I was using this setup which worked fine prior to the pc rebuild. Bloody gremlins huh? Any other suggestions most welcome. Craig |

I tried calling my ISP but the operator said it wasnt them blocking LW, besides I have used Limewire with this system and online setup before just with my old motherboard and hdd I had before the rebuild. I might call the ISP again as it may still be them. the settings in my Norton were already set to allow LW. Craig |

[1] Open windows explorer select Tools à Folder Options à View à Show hidden files and folders. [2] In windows explorer look for the Limewire Folder – go here:- c:\documents and settings\username\applications data\LimeWire (or) c:\documents and settings\username\limewire [3] Ensure that limewire is completely off - check the system tray to see that it is not there - if it is click on it and select exit [4] Open the .limewire folder and look for and delete the gnutella.net file – http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/LW_g...1196869679.jpg [5] now download a new version from (here) and save it to your desktop[6 Drag the new gnutella.net file into the limewire folder.[5] Close the LW Folder and start up Limewire |

Also have you tried changing yr java script from the latest download to an older version (JRE 5.0 Update 14) - use the add/remove program -- remove the version you have installed before you download/install the JRE 5.0 Update 14 - if this don't work pse read the sticky threads at the top of page 1 (If LW will not connect) and (connection problems) - if after working yr way through these fixes yr problem remains pse let us know via here |
yeah I have been through all the stickies and done what they said but still no go? |

Klassic, Do that LW port test again. http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ Are you using PeerGuardian2? If you are, just make sure that PG2 isn't blocking access to the site (open PG2 & watch what happens when you try to connect to the test site). If the test still doesn't work & it's not a PG2 problem, try changing ports. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 65000 > apply > ok. You can also try other ports in the range of 49152 - 65535. Go into LW's preferences folder (LimeWire) & find your gnutella.net file...hover your mouse over the file...what size is it? Did you ever try port forwarding? Even though you didn't have to use it before, it's worth a try if you're determined to use LW...the specific instructions for your router are here. Port Forwarding for the Motorola SBG 900 Don't forget to set up a static IP address first. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within your router's setup should all be the same number. |
Hey guys I've read the -read me first- stickies and I couldn't connect at first, but I replaced the gnutella.net file and viola, it worked!! and now I can connect but I still have a firewall icon next to my connection which is green. I can still download files and everything, but I was just wondering if I shouldn't have a firewall icon or if that's normal. The reason why I'm asking is because my laptop that runs windows XP has limewire-pro and gets blue bars with a turbo-charge connection and has no firewall icons. Is the fact that it's limewire-pro the reason why it gets the turbo-charge connection, or is it the firewall holding back my speed? My pc running limewire ; 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows 98 2. What firewalls you have? None 3. How much ram? 512 4. Hard Disk space available? 5GB 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) broadband connected through a router. 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? NETGEAR RangeMax 802.11g Wireless Router Model: WPN824 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? Home 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. Limewire 4.16.1 - Jave Version 1.6.0 9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)? AT&T 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It said "Your test worked!" 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. I'm sharing the connection with a laptop (running windows XP) connected wirelessly. Other than that, I run Limewire by itself. 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. First time user 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Oh Yeah 0_0 . I can still download!! although I'm concern if this brick wall is holding my connection back from getting a "turbo-charge" or if that's just a lime-wire pro feature. Also I must add that even though I see a brick wall , my downloads are pretty quick. Thanks :] |
Pro always shows a turbocharged connection (blue bars). If you're running basic LW then you'll only see a turbo connection if you connect as an ultrapeer, rather than a leaf. Connecting as an ultrapeer just means that you have a fast connection & aren't firewalled, so you have the capacity to handle more traffic than people with slower connections or people who are firewalled. If you're seeing the firewall icon in LW on the Win 98 then you won't be able to connect as an ultrapeer & you won't see a turbo connection. There's no disadvantage in not being able to connect as an UP;) Being a leaf is fine. If your XP computer isn't firewalled then other people should be able to download from you without a problem...if it was me I'd just say "yay" & not worry about the 98:D If you desperately want the 98 to have a turbo connection, just copy your Pro installer over to that, install Pro & away you go! |
