Default Internet Connection Suddenly Lost

INTERNET CONNECTION SUDDENLY LOST

(All details pf system etc at end of message.)

Hello all. I understand that there are some really bright sparks out there! Shine on me for a while.....

Problem is this: We have two Windows XP computers that have been working wonderfully off the wired hub that connects to the broadband ISP. Both computers communicated well with each other and I connected a third computer yesterday and it too immediately connected to the home network and connected to the internet. All looked perfect until I was downloading some music files from Limewire. The internet connection was lost and continues to be lost on only this one computer inspite of all my efforts. This computer can still connect to the other 2 computers which can both connect to it and to the internet.
I am sure this is a simple thing - but even simple things are complex for simple man!
If you can help, I would be grateful.
Joe

1. Windows XP Professional
2. Windows firewall
3. Lots of RAM
4. Lots of Hard Disk space available
5. Broadband.
6. ATA (VOIP) "switch/router?"
7. Connecting from house
8. LimeWire 4.14.12 & Java 1.6.0_03
9. ISP is a Spanish co. called Broadband4Spain based in Cómpeta bear Málaga.
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
11. On a home network. All (3) computers connected to a wired hub then to the ATA (VOIP) box that goes into the wall and connects me to the internet and telephone via a satellite dish. fast 100Mbs (?) connection.
12. I was downloading from LW for the first time on two computers simultaneously on the home network. One continued to download and it and the third computer (from which I was not downloading at the time) still connect to the internet. It is the other computer on which I was simultaneously downloading from LW that simply stopped mid download and has not reconnected to the internet since
13. There is a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface
14. The computer I am on now is using PPPOE so I guess I'm using an ethernet and ADSL??? I don't know whether the other (faulty) computer is using the same but I assume it is. I don't understand what port forwarding or UPnP enabled are - sorry!!
15. Using AVG professional antivirus and Windows SpyWare. They have always worked fine before and allowed LW to download during the short time that I have been doing so.
16. I am currently in Spain
If there is anything I have missed, please let me know.

Can all 3 computers access the internet? If yes, then the problem will most likely be with limewire or the firewall/network settings on the problem computer.

Things to check/do:
1) Have you restarted the problem computer at least once before posting? Sometimes this is all it takes to fix the problem.

2) Make sure that the network settings on the problem computer are the same as the other two. Click on 'Start' --> 'Control Panel' --> double-click 'Network Connections' --> right-click on 'Local Area Connection' --> select 'Properties' from bottom of list that appears --> double-click 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'. Make sure the settings are the same as the other computer that is running limewire.

3) Check Windows firewall settings. Maybe something got changed and you didn't realize it. Click on 'Start' --> 'Control Panel' --> double-click 'Windows Firewall' --> click on 'Exceptions' near the top of the box that appears. Is limewire listed?

Thanks frenzy

Two computers can access the internet. The problematic one cannot do so but can access the home network.

I don't think it's the firewall since it allowed stuff through for at least an hour on Limewire before it suddenly lost connection, and the other 2 computers have the same firewall and AVG settings and they allow both access to the internet and to Limewire as I write.
I have restarted the problem computer at least once before and after posting.

2) All 'Local Area Connection' properties are the same on all three computers.

3) All firewall settings permit Limewire as an 'Exception'.

I await your next words of wisdom.

Thanks,
Joe

Are the computers all set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'? If yes, do you know how to access the page on the router/modem that lists the DHCP leases? Check to make sure that there is only 3 computers listed and none of them are listed twice.

Two other things I'd like you to do.

1) Make a ASCII drawing of the network setup in your house starting from the internet.

2) What is the name and model number of your modem and router?

Default Internet Connection Suddenly Lost

Hi frenzy.usa

All the computers all set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'.

I do not know how to access the page on the router/modem that lists the DHCP leases. So I cannot check to make sure that there are only 3 computers listed and none of them are listed twice.

Cable enters house and goes to VOIP box (Solwise Firmware Version 47.68.1); one cable goes from there to wired network hub; from there three cables go out, one to each computer.

The VOIP ATA box (Solwise Firmware Version 47.68.1, has mst of its label erased by the ISP who instllaed the switch. I don't know if it is called a switch box, or router. Basically, there is a continuous link to the internet from the cable coming out of the wall and all the computers (except the one in question, although it used to as well) can connect to the internet directly by putting this cable into the back of the computer (into the ethernet socket?).

I am going to try the WinSock XP Fix suggested by frenzy.usa.

Hope the information helps.

Joe

Default Internet Connection Suddenly Lost

GUYS!!

Suddenly, without any apparent reason (to me, at least at this stage), I am connected to the internet on all computers...

All I can say is that something changed on the problematic computer without running WinsockxpFix and without running any anti-spyware programs. The virus scans have fouond no viruses on the problematic computer although when I ran Adware on one of the working computers it found a number of things it didn't like. these it deleted.
I assume that this could have been the reason? I mean, is it possible for a virus.adware/spyware or whatever to get on one computer and block another of the computers (not both the other two computers) from getting on the internet?
I am confused.

Admittedly, all computers have been turned off and on several times during the last couple of days and I don't know if the combination of turning one or the other on at a time when one or more of the other computers was on or off made a difference, but something has worked.

It could even be that the ISP (whom I contacted by email to start with and asked to help me (he never got back to me, by the way!) has made some changes his end. I have no idea.

I would like to that you all for your help and attention and would like to help if there is anything I can do to further clarify what happened in the event that it may be of use to someone else in the future who may get into a similar position as me.

Regards

Joe

Glad to hear it is working. It probably had something to do with turning things off and back on.

Thanks. It could well be that that did it.

Best wishes
