New problem connecting Hi all! For some reason the newer versions of LimeWire have stopped working on my computer. I just downloaded the latest version from the previous, the previous version used to freeze up all the time, and now this version refuses to connect past the very first bar. I am running on Windows Vista Professional, and I have Verizon DSL. My router is a Westell Versalink 327w but I have already opened a port forwarding port for the Limewire, just like I have had to do in the past, and it is still not working. It still says it's behind a firewall. Windows Firewall is turned off, and I don't have any other programs like Norton or McAfee. This is making me very angry- I am ready to knock the s*** out of this thing! I never dealt with any problems until the newer versions came out. Here's my lowdown- 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) If using Windows Vista, please tell us whether you have an Administrator user account. : Windows Vista Professional 2. What firewalls you have? Windows, built in firewall in Router 3. How much ram? 2 gb 4. Hard Disk space available? 103 GB 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) DSL 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Westell VersaLink 327 w 7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? Home 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LW: 4.18.3 and Java: 1.6_07 9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Verizon 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Says it worked 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. Nope 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. New prob w/exp user 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yep & don't know why 14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Port Forwarding 15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall Just the windows, and the firewall is turned off 16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). USA Hopefully this can get fixed because it's VERY annoying! I appreciate all advice! Thanks alot, and have a great day! :) UPDATE: I have tried the list that's posted out front, it's still not working. And I downloaded the newest version of Java. Nothing is working here!!! |
LW Connection in Vista Hi Heartoftheocean1986. There seem to be dozens of us with this problem. I have tried all the variations of settings and come to realise it is nothing to do with any of this. I am working with Vista also and everything was fine until I went to 4.14.3. Might not work for you but I find Saturday afternoons through Sunday is about the only time I can get all green bars showing connection. I'm Eastern time.. Give it a try. I know how frustrated you are believe me - we all are. |
Lot's of people have had probs with the latest versions of LW. First thing to try is deleting the preferences folder...that often fixes connection problems that occur after updating. There's info about deleting the prefs folder in this thread: If LW Will Not Connect If deleting the prefs folder doesn't help, try the other fixes in that thread:) |
Dozens, probably hundreds of people all with a similar problem. What a fantastic program. |
Thank God I finally got it to work! I kept trying that Pref folder thingy, and I couldn't find where in the hell the folders were....things were so much easier with XP! Finally got it, deleted it, and had to start over again, but so far the connection is working. Thanks everyone for helping! Have a good day/evening! :rolleyes_2: |
Can you explain the pref folder thing? I can't find the site that told me how to do it. |
Click on this link: If LW Will Not Connect There's a section in that thread explaining about deleting the prefs folder & also a link for Vista users. |
Man, I did that too. Nothing's working. |
After you deleted the prefs folder, did you have to go through the LW setup wizard all over again? Did you try all of the fixes in that thread? If you did, go & find the gnutella.net file...hover your mouse over the file...how big is it? |
The gnutella.net file is 17kb. |
Did you have to go through the setup wizard again after deleting the prefs folder? Did you try all of the other fixes? Did you have trouble with any of them? Is that gnutella.net file the original, or did you replace it? That thread has info about which system details we need...can you post back with your system details? |
Yeah they're in the other thread I started...do you just want to continue the convo there? And I think I'm a little confused. Am I supposed to open LimeWire, then delete the Limewire folder that's in ApplicationData? |
Here's my specs: 1. OS version: XP 2. What firewalls you have: ZoneAlarm. I don't turn the Windows Firewall on as I've read that running two firewalls is bad. 3. RAM: 1 gig 4. Hard Disk space available: 79% free 5. Connection type: Broadband 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers: LinkSys Wireless-G 2.4 Ghz broadband router 7. Where are you trying to connect from: House 8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have: LW, 4.18.3; Java, 1.6.0 9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider): Sprint 10. Do this simple test for us. What happens when you go there: Test worked 11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up: Two computers run through the wireless router. Not sure what other details I should provide 12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user: Experienced in that I'm experiencing a lot of frustration 13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?: Yes 14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?: Not sure how to check that 15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)?: ZoneAlarm and AVG Anti-Virus 16. What country are you living in: US |
I'll delete your other thread & keep everything here. LW MUST be completely closed (check in Task Manager & if there's a LW process still running - end the process) before you delete the prefs folder...otherwise it won't work. |
Okay and then I'm doing what? I followed what the other site said and I got nowhere. |
And yes, the setup wizard came up after I deleted the folder and tried to run the program again. |
I also got into my router settings and opened a port and changed that particular setting in Limewire. Still nothing. |

You're using an older version of Java...did you try updating to the latest version & rolling back to the older version mentioned in the help thread? Remember to remove all other Java versions before updating or rolling back. What's the model of your Linksys? Quote:
Did you set up a static IP address before port forwarding? Just in case - check your port forwarding setup. Go here, find your model of router, choose LW from the list of programs. You'll get step by step instructions for port forwarding & a link to static IP setup: PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall |
It's the Gnutella.net file. You have to download the new file from zSHARE - gnutella.net and delete the old one and then copy and paste in the new one. It worded like a champ for me. This file is found in (Computer/Users/Username/Appdate/limewire) (Vista) |

Yea!!! It worked for me!!! I simply had to post this....woo hoo!!...it worked for me!! :super: I just replaced the gnutella.net file and voila...Limewire connected!!! Here's the lowdown: I had used Limewire previously (Ver 4.14..) without any problems (Even when I was behind a firewall)...that was about 6 mths ago. Then when I tried using it today....it didn't connect. There was only 1 bar in the connection status and there was a brick wall in front of the globe. I updated to Limewire 4.18.3 but still nothing. Updated Jave to Java 6 update 10 Beta. Still same results. Last, with no options left, I decided to go to zSHARE - gnutella.net and downloaded the file and replaced the old one with this one. Well!!! It worked like a charm!!! :yahoo:I opened Limewire 4.18.3 and the connection bars started rising...and rising :xirokrotima:until they became all green and guess what? The brick wall just disappeared!!!....Now that's amazin!!!! I have to give a shout out to Birdy and his excellent tips!!! Thanks mate!! You were a real help!!! :aweof: |
What the hell? I just did the same thing I've been doing with the gnutella.net file and NOW it's working. I still have the brick wall, but my connection strength is full. Sweet. |
Same problem. I've tried replacing the gnutella.net file and reinstalling the program. I'm back to Square One. |
I've left it open for several hours...still no connection. |
