Can't Connect from Wireless Lapto

Hi,
I have an HP desktop with Vista, 2GB Ram, 600 Hard Drive. My Laptop has XP, 712 GB Ram and 60 HD.

I have a linksys router, model BEFW11s4 and a cable broadband connection of 5 megs download and 512 upload speeds.

I have Limewire version 4.18.3 on both PC's. My Jave version is 5.0 update 14. I can't update my java version to the newer because I can't connect to my job's secure website when I do. But I've had this version for a couple years with no problem. I'm not sure what version of Gnutella I'm running.

I can connect to Limewire and search and download on my desktop with no problem at any time. However, on my laptop, which I use to connect to my home network through my wireless connection, I can't connect to Limewire most of the time. A lot of times if I have Limewire running on the desktop, I can download from Limewire on the laptop. But if I don't have Limewire up and running on my desktop, I can never connect on my laptop. On both PC's, the brick wall shows up on the icon in Limewire saying that I'm behind a firewall. The only firewalls I have are the Windows firewalls and they are both on and exceptions have been created on both PC's for Limewire. I tried creating an exception for Gnutella on the XP firewall on my laptop but it didn't work.

I only have the AVG anti-virus free addition running and that's about it. Under the Firewall settings in Limewire, I'm listening on port 4443 and have the UpNp option set for automatic under router configuration for both computers.

My desktop that runs Vista is basically new. When I had XP running on both computers, I never had this problem and I've had this same router for a few years. I'm not sure if port fowarding is enable on the router, although I assume it is seeing as how it worked for two years when I had XP on both PC's. I haven't changed anything.

One thing happened the other day that was a little wierd. My downloads were downloading, but I received no search results when I tried repeatedly.

I tried the test that was recommended in the posting suggestions for this forum and the test come back as "working." But it's not.

If I left anything out, please let me know. I will get back to you very promptly and I really appreciate the help.

Hi,
I've never been in this forum before now. Did I post in the wrong place or something. If anyone needs anymore information from me I'll gladly get it. I can't get this thing going for nothing. My files are downloading right now, but I can't search.

Wireless laptop

OK, here is my guess, based on the info you provided. You already proved your trbl is not w/you he gnutella network, as your desktop seems to run fine.

The firewall message you see is probably your modem/router firewall. It is a hardware firewall, much stronger than software firewalls. Sometimes these two firewalls can be a real pain in the a++s. Each brand of modem/routers configure things different, and a real good source of help can be found at portforwarding.com. Also verify network settings on laptop. Make sure you disable any traffic shaping services (ie, QoS)

Your java version could be a culprit, too. (not sure). I think your java version should be closer to the present version, at least 6.0 or newer. Maybe there is a way to use a separate java version for limewire, and the older one for your office.

You may want to post a HiJackThis log up here. This could help other forum members analyze your problem. Info on HiJackThis is posted all over the forum, just run a search for it.

Hope this gets u started

Port Fowarding Question

Hi,
Like I said in my original post, Limewire always runs fine from my desktop. It's my wireless laptop that's having the problem.

I have a couple of questions. Do I need to have Limewire listening on the same exact ports on my desktop and my laptop? If Limewire is running fine from my desktop and always has, should I change the port on my laptop to the same port that's being used on my desktop.

If they're not suppose to be the same, which port do I foward in the router settings? The port that's working fine or the port on my laptop that I'm having trouble with?

I hate to sound ignorant, but I'm not too savy on this port fowarding stuff, and my router is kinda old.

Thanks
