nitrious09,

There are no central servers. The servers are the people that are connected to the network who are sharing files. If you can connect only at certain times, maybe your ISP is doing some kind of throttling/blocking during peak times. Some do. If you give us your system details then we might know a bit more: System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

Sue Ramsay & dmdahn,

Try the fixes in the thread below. If nothing there helps, post back with your system details (see for thread for more info about the details that we need).
If LW Will Not Connect

dmdahn August 30th, 2008 02:05 PM

1. OS version? Windows xp
2. What firewalls you have? windows but that is configured to allow lw as wel as mcafee but its allowed lw
3. How much ram? 1016 mb /2000mh
4. Hard Disk space available? 20 gb
5. Connection type? cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? belkin g plus mimo 692364
7. Where are you trying to connect from house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? lw 4.10.9 java 1.6.0_07
9. Who is your ISP
10. Do this simple test for us. my test worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs no
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's yes but all are configured to allow
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
15. What security programs are you using mcafee
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country USA

birdy August 30th, 2008 09:09 PM

Don't use 2 software firewalls at once - they'll conflict with each other. Turn off the Windows firewall & make sure that McAfee's properly configured to allow LW.
Port Forwarding for the McAfee Security Center

Can you find a model number for your router (eg F5D7010, F5D 8230-4 etc)?

Who is your ISP (which company do you pay for your internet)?

Is this your first try at using LW?

Do you know whether you're using your router with UPnP enabled, or a port forwarded?

Did you try all of the fixes in that help thread? Did you have trouble with any of them?

Hello Ladies; I'm back. You are lucky you cannot connect. I started with Napster, then Bearshare, then Limewire; then quit using it over two years ago. Now I know why! Tonight I was looking for 3 old time songs for a project so I said what the heck I will install Limewire and look for them. The interface had not changed that much and I had no trouble getting instant results. I started eight downloads hoping to get 3 good files. I'm using DSL so they downloaded in seconds AND the fire alarms started going off. I got 2 good files the other six had viruses, worms, or malware. Then it hit me, that's why I quit before - overwhelming garbage. This time I have a better virus program. I will still have Limewire on a Mac I have because none of that malware works on a Mac, but I will uninstall it form this computer after Labor day. Until that time I'm sharing 50 Gb of music. (everything is over 20 years old). The new interface I am using doesn't have the 2 green bars anymore.

But do you see a Brick wall at bottom of LW's interface? If yes, that means people will struggle to upload from you, and at times you may have connection problems in future.

Simple solution should then be to turn off your Windows firewall. Go to Control panels, double-click on Windows Firewall, check the disable box.

Then for your other firewall:

1. Check the Windows system tray (usually located in the bottom-right corner of the screen, next to the time), and locate the icon associated with your security program. Right-click the icon to enter the settings.
2. Locate a section for adding exceptions for specific programs.
3. Add LimeWire as an exception (C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe by default on most Windows systems)

* Oops perhaps I misread the posts above, I thought you were running two firewalls. Well, configure whichever one you are using to allow LW through.

Sometimes when installing a new version of LW, you need to remove the old firewall rule for LW & re-add a fresh one. For some firewalls, you also need to do this when updating the firewall software.
