LW is still Firewalled - Verizon dsl - Vista

Before answering the questions, I want to add one quick point. I was using LW with Comcast Internet. I switched to Verizon DSL about 3 weeks ago and since then, it has not worked...

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) - Vista/Admin
2. What firewalls you have? - All disabled (had
3. How much ram? a lot
4. Hard Disk space available? a lot
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) - DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? - Westell a90 7500 series
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? - townhouse
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? The newest - 4.18.6
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? - Verizon
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? - Your Test worked...
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. - I have a wireless router, two other laptops are on it
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. - new problem, due to a new ISP
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? -YES!
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Originally set up as UPnP but I do not believe that works for Verizon. So I changed it to Port Forwarding
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall :) - None
16. What country are you living in? - USA

*Further explanation: After talking with Verizon's "advanced tech support" they said they could not help me but it does involve port forwarding. When I go to the Firewall settings for the router, I clicked the port forwarding tab, and created a new rule. They have a selection for LW. (I had to do this process for my XBox Live account). So I created the rule and LW is still saying there is a firewall. I have checked the forums for tips and advice (from deleting LW and reinstalling it), to restarting my computer and modem, but to no avail. PLEASE HELP:(

When you created the port number for your westell did you put in place a tcp and a udp rule ??? You need to forward both of those ports with the same number ....

When you have done that you will need to enter that same number into limewire (Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewall)...

You will see the Manual Port Forward option as well as the Listening Rule option...Enter that same number into those options and select apply...

Just remember that you will only use just the one port number for it all...

OLDUSER September 15th, 2008 11:20 AM

you have already try to change the limewire port you use ...

calycal42 September 15th, 2008 01:17 PM

Tried it, but it didn't work...added in more details...

2 Attachment(s)
Thanks for the response so far. I followed what you said and I tried to attach two pictures (one of the router screen..one of the LW screen). In case the attachments do not work, I will write about the two screens in details.

The router(rule) screen: In the Firewall settings:
LimewirePort ForwardingCALVIN-PChttp://192.168.1.1/imagesV/edit.gif http://192.168.1.1/imagesV/delete.gif
Service Details http://192.168.1.1/imagesV/empty.gifService Name Limewire</B>Type Port Forwarding</B>

EntryProtocolGlobal Port(s)Local Port(s)1both634663462tcp12141214

LimeWire Screen: I set the two ports to these numbers:
Listening Port - 6346
Manual Port Forward - 6346

After I set the numbers to be 6346, I reset my computer and unplugged my wireless router. After a good minute, I plugged my router back in and turned my computer. LW started up automatically and still says it is blocked by a firewall.

You mentioned that all the numbers should be the same, so that is why I chose 6346, instead of 1214 (that is the number that was assigned to 'both' with the pre-existing tab (limewire) for the rule.

If I tried to create a rule, it gave me three boxes to inport numbers, instead of two. Would this be better for me to do, instead of using the pre-existing "limewire" rule for my router? ex:
Define the first rule:ProtocolGlobal PortStartGlobal PortEndBase HostPortDirectionPort Direction tcpudpbothInOutSrcDst

Hopefully this gives you a better picture and can help provide a solution. Thanks again for your continuous help...already you all have shown more knowledge than my ISP..

calycal42 September 15th, 2008 02:58 PM

And if I did not make it obvious in my ramblings, the problem is still not fixed....:(

wondering why September 16th, 2008 03:55 AM

I would go for a higher number something between 49152 up to 65535...

From what I can see from the screen shot of your router you still have two different numbers there...

I will give you the instructions for a different Westell model (I can't find any for the one you are using) It suggests to do a static IP, I just assumed that you had already done this as you mentioned port forwarding for your xbox...If you have never set up a static IP for your computer you will have to do this step, you only have to do this just the once...

These instructions also show you how to do that, although there not the ones for your router they will give you an idea of what the process is...

Port Forwarding for the Westell A90-327W15-06

calycal42 September 16th, 2008 08:36 PM

What do I type for the Base Hostport?

Well, I will try and create a new rule...

You said to use the same number. Lets say 50424...

So when I create the rule I will type in the following:

Check mark - Port forwarding (not port triggering)
Protocol - I can choose TCP, UDP, or Both. Im assuming I choose BOTH?
GLobal Portstart - 50424
Global Portend - 50424
Base Hostport - ? (should it be again 50424?)
Direction - In or Out?
- If Out, it gives me the option of Port Direction: DST or SRC?

Thanks...looking forward to having this fixed. You are being a big help...

wondering why September 17th, 2008 03:24 AM

You said to use the same number. Lets say 50424... Sounds good

So when I create the rule I will type in the following:

Check mark - Port forwarding (not port triggering) Yes port forwarding
Protocol - I can choose TCP, UDP, or Both. Im assuming I choose BOTH? both...
GLobal Portstart - 50424 yes
Global Portend - 50424 yes
Base Hostport - ? (should it be again 50424?) yes....
Direction - In or Out? In
- If Out, it gives me the option of Port Direction: DST or SRC?

Once you have done that make sure you change the number for Manual Port Forward in lime as well as the Listening port to 50424 and select apply then ok....

Wondering Why...

I was supposed to fly into my local airport at 11pm this evening, but due to delays I had to fly into an airport over an hour away from me. I just got into my place and in a matter of 5 hours I have to wake up to coach a little kids soccer team. I wasnt in the best of moods. I decided before I went to bed to see if you responded and after seeing you did, I tried it out.

My limewire works now and I couldnt be more appreciative!! Thanks for helping a stranger out; it made my day...

wondering why September 20th, 2008 12:58 PM

Anytime...I'm glad you have it all sorted now...If you run into anymore problems just let us know....;)

calycal42 September 28th, 2008 12:43 PM

Oh no! Just stopped working...

Well this is interesting...

Has been working since you helped me, and this morning I opened it. Well, now it is not working, saying that I have a firewall up again? I checked the backends (port forwarding) and even changed all the numbers again. *To Number 50659.
- made a new rule, as before, and all the numbers match 50659 (both in limewire and port forwarding rule.

Any reason why the firewall would come back up?

calycal42 September 28th, 2008 07:20 PM

Got it WORKING!

Hey, I tried the trick of turning off "automatically start LW"....turned it off and restarted my computer. Now its back to working...keep those fingers crossed:)

Wondering Why,
I am having similar problems on my system. I was using a cable modem, and Limewire fine for many years, We just switched to Verizon DSL, and Limewire won't connect and search. I take my laptop to another hot pot, and can connect without a problem, so I know it the DSL.
I changed within Limewire my Manual port forwarding to 59998 in both bozes (manual port and Listen on port).
I changed my ROUTER (as explained on the link) to Port Forwarding, start port = 59998, end port = 59998 with an IP address of 192.168.2.100. (router is 192.169.2.1)
i am using Windows XP, but outside of that, my setup is pretty much the same as the other one listed here.
I followed the link you had posted, but it still didn't seem to work. Do I need to change the settings on my MODEM as well? if so how do I do that?

thanks for any help.

You might have to, could you supply these details please that way I can take a closer look at your set up...

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-you-post.html

Make sure that you don't have a firewall from Verizon...if their security suite is part of your internet package then there could be a firewall included.

Tribecca9 October 1st, 2008 06:24 AM

To which I would add, make sure you never use Verizon. But, seriously, when I got to this page I had pop-up that read- You must type in your password to read this page. Finally, after I hit cancel three times, the pop-up went away.

Port designations... if they ain't broke, don't fix them!

fantazyland October 1st, 2008 01:02 PM

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows XP

2. What firewalls you have? The standard windows firewall is the only on that I know of. But I’ve used LW with that active in the past. LW is on the exception list. I was told by Verizon that since I didn’t sign up for the Extra Anti-virus pack (which costs more) That I don’t have any other firewalls from them. (I’m not sure if I believe that.)

3. How much ram? 248 Mb

4. Hard Disk space available? 55Gb

5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) DSL

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem: Westell F90-610015-06 / Router: NETGEAR WGR614 v6

7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, apartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? House

8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. LW 4.18.8 / Java 1.6.0_07

9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Verizon

10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Page not found / Cannot display page.

11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. PC with wireless router & 2 wireless laptops.

12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. We’ve used LW for a couple of years, but since we switched from Cable modem to Verizon DSL, LW says we’re connected, but only the 1 shortest bar is green, the rest are red. But when you try and search, nothing happens, no results no up, nutting. We run LW primarily on our PC, but I recently installed it on my Laptop that I take back and forth to work. When I take my laptop to work and use the internet connection there, LW works fine.

13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes, I do, but I also do when I’m at on my internet connection there and LW works fine.

14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? On my modem set up, I have the option for Port forwarding and Port Triggering, I chose port forwarding.

15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall. Avast, but I’ve always been running that. I disabled it to try and get it to work, and still nothing. On my Laptop, I also use avast, and again on the internet connection at work, LW works fine even with Avast.

16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). USA (IN)

17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? LW worked fine for years. We changed from our cable internet provider to Verizon DSL. When that happened, I had to change settings on my router to get that to work. I still have issues in that I have to manually change my Outgoing server (SMTP) Server Port number every time I take me laptop from home to work or vice versa. My incoming mail is fine, but my outgoing does not work unless I change that Port # to 25 at home, and 587 at work. I was told by Verizon that I could sign up for the “yahoo add-on” and some how that if I link my Outlook mail to that, that will fix that issue.

wondering why October 2nd, 2008 02:39 AM

It sounds like Verizon is the culprit here, if limewire works on your laptop at work, it's not a fault with that....It maybe your port forwarding set up, but I doubt it...

The give away is Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Page not found / Cannot display page.

Normally when you see that it means that your ISP is shaping your connection to p2p sites....

These are your step by step instructions for port forwarding your Netgear router....See how you go with them....

Port Forwarding for the Netgear WGR614v6

fantazyland October 2nd, 2008 04:51 PM

OK, thanks for the info. I followed the instructions. My Computer already has a static IP address of 192.168.2.5. I choose a port # 59998. On my modem set-up, I did as it said, Service Type: TCP/UDP; Starting Port: 59998; Ending Port 59998; Server IP address: (it came up with 192.168.2.__; I input a 5 into the last place. I then re-started the computer, modem and router. then I restarted LW, and still the same thing. 1 small bar of connection, and nothing else. I also then tried http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ and still nothing.

wondering why October 3rd, 2008 02:32 PM

I really think it's your ISP and if it is there will be nothing you can do except to change to another that doesn't block P2P....

You could try these fixes just in case though....

Even though i've been told by at least 4 people from Verizon that my modem DOES NOT HAVE A FIREWALL, well I stumbled onto it just the other day, I typed in the IP address of my modem, and there it was.... and it was set to HIGH. I turned it off, and BOOM, everything works great. I even spoke to a Verizon after this, and they denied there was a Firewall, And I tell them It is there, or was, and they talk to me like i'm a nutjob!!! So much for their tech support team...

Tribecca9 November 10th, 2008 07:39 PM

Verizon's pervasive single-ended Ad concept; implicating you'll get a team of technical experts behind every cellular call,- sorta like the politician who promises lower taxes?

I'm NOT on verizon, but when I got to this page, it kept requesting my user name and password, and I kept entering them, but they weren't accepted, so after four tries, I said, forget this, and clicked cancel, which it wouldn't accept so I had to click cancel twice more before that dialog box closed and just went away and I was finally allowed to read AND ADD to this page.

Welcome to cyber nonsense. I discovered a really useful anti-virus suite for Windows that may apply to many such problems. This is the ONLY real Trojan eliminator I've ever withessed (at least in XP.) OpenSource, freeware. This truly finds the pieces of Trojans that affix themselves to common cookies, like Hotmail. MSNBC, etc.

Another reason I historically liked macs. PCs were always the #1 choice of haters who wanted to mess with other people's computers for fun. Now that the code is merging, I don't know how much longer that will be true. My husband's best friend has a graphic design company and most of the computers are PCs, because the Adobe versions of Photoshop and Illustrator and 3D design programs for Windows are so much cheaper than the mac versions. He had to get tough about employees downloading emails and stuff on work computers because it was, like, new viruses, all the time. They weren't using the anti-virus software they had.

Most of what I want to watch is stuff like animation-- Naruto shippuden and the not that old CATSCRATCH cartoons on Nick that Viacom has never released on DVD. I go to TurboNICK, but the buffering takes FOREVER, and anything copyrighted is being taken of YOUTUBE. Why can't this stuff just be available for download at iTunes?:bangh:
