Help Me Connect Please :)

i already searched, tried all the available options that are stickied on the forum but i can't seem to get it work. i have a hunch of what's wrong though. i used trend micro antivirus/firewall and i also use a router/modem. but when i go to turn off my virusscan and firewall, it still says that LW has detect a firewall. how can that be when i turned it off already, including the firewall by windows. so i think my main problem is trying to let my firewall and my linksys router to allow the limewire port to access. so i'm just wondering how do i go about doing that?

thanks. and here are the answers to questions you guys need.

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) If using Windows Vista, please tell us whether you have an Administrator user account. XP Home Ed. SP3
2. What firewalls you have? Trend Micro Internet Security Pro
3. How much ram? 1GB
4. Hard Disk space available? 30GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem: Arris, Router: Linksys WRT54G
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? Home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ Click to see Sample image (Latest LW 4.18.8 and latest Java version)
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Comcast
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says "Your test worked!"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. Modem is set in my room w/ router. Another room in the house has a wireless adapter that picks up the WiFi signal from the router in my room.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. New problem. I have used LW before with no problems, but that was before I had a router and a firewall program.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Yes
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Sorry, don't know.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall :) Trend Micro Internet Security
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). Oregon, USA
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? No, Java up-to-date. Only version of LW installed.

1. Disable your XP firewall, because running two software firewalls results in less security in most cases, and other problems. ;) Go to the control panel, double click on Windows Firewall, check the disable box.

2. Configure your Trend FW to allow LW full access. User Cant Connect - LimeWire

3. Your Linksys WRT54G is unfortunately one of a range of models Linksys released which has buggy firmware which they never properly repaired. So it does not run reliably in UPnP mode. (UPnP mode is where a program is able to send a request to the router to open a NAT port for access.) Thus port forwarding is the more reliable option. Let me know if you wish instructions on how to do. Get your software firewall sorted out first. ;)

my windows xp firewall is already disabled. i've allowed limewire as an exception into my trend micro antivirus/firewall program. it also asks me the port i want it to listen/forward to from LW, which i'm not sure what i'm suppose to put there... maybe u could tell me.

and i would like instructions on how to set up my router so it allows limewire to connect.

really appreciate your help!

thanks.

1. The first and most important step is setting up a static ip: Static ip for XP

2. Then find your specific model here PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall click on link, find LimeWire on next page, follow directions. :) BTW I recommend Port forwarding for BOTH TCP & UDP.

3. For your software firewall, I think choose same as your router for port. It can be port 6346, else you can choose an alternate free port such as between ports 49152 - 65535.

4. If still cannot connect, go back to my first post & follow those suggestions again. ;)

First try these things: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) then see the link at the bottom about supplying your system details & take your time. We cannot help without them. :)

I am having the same trouble. I have plenty of ram, I installed, uninstalled and reinstalled. I have been a previous LW user, using same system and setup and can not connect for some reason. I am running on windows vista and have trouble shooted every step within this thread. Can someone please tell me what else I can do. I have NEVER had this problem before, and I am pretty computer literate. I have a windows firewall (which I have tried abled and disabled) and the trend micro. I have made the exceptions, wonder if its a problem on LW end, since we all have been previous users?????

Filled in half the details. :D Any chance of completing this: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link). There might be something you are missing. ;) Modem/routers are sometimes a problem if UPnP is not functioning properly or their implementation is unreliable. Are you running wired or wireless?

Roughly how many incomplete files do you have? (Explore the incomplete folder from the Library window, use the folder description to find out how many files)

Hi, I have the same problem i cannot connect. Iam useing a laptop its a sony viao it runs vista and I have done everthing. I have done everything u have said to do. I also got a desktop that runs windows xp and i have no problems running LW. I'm just wondering could it be issues with vista and LW?? I have used LW on the laptop and have had no problems till the up grade to 4.18. Like I said the desktop has no problems running LW. The laptop though just cant connect and LW does nothing no error msg or anything doesnt say unable to connect. It just sits at the 1 bar trying to connect.

Make sure both the connection & listening ports are different on each LW. Find out via Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewalls. Ports between 49152 - 65535 are good to use.

Generally the problem with connection after updating is usually the out of date Gnutella.net file. You changed that one to one in that link? If yes, how about copying the one from your desktop to the laptop. :)
