Disconnected - 4.18.5 and new version

Hi Forum Members:

:sos:Well, I don't know what is wrong this time with Limewire. It was working/connecting fine for sometime now. However, I was having some issues with accessing other people's files and overall searching capabilities.

No help or response from Limewire PRO.

It is completely DEAD! I've tried everything. Nothing has changed on my computer but it will not work. Updated to new version but still won't work?

Any suggestions.

Thanks,:yikes:

Try the tips here: If LW Will Not Connect

Make sure that your XP firewall is properly off & that the Trend Micro firewall's allowing LW. You might have to remove the current LW rules, then start from scratch & add them again: PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Otherwise, try port forwarding for your 2wire: Port Forwarding for the 2 Wire 2701HG-G

:)

LW Not Connecting

Hi Birdy:

Thanks Birdy, appreciate the help.

Is there a particular reason why Limewire PRO is doing this more often the time? I don't remember every having to remove Limewire in the past. It is only the past six (6) months that I've noticed problems all the time.

I have all those items in place. It just stopped working -- dead! I've had problems when I've updated to a newer version and have had to reset everything but nothing has changed?

I check all the settings today. Everything seems to be in place?

I can removed these settings and redo them and try that and see if it works. Usually when this happens, I have to do a complete clean install of Limewire and then install again fresh.

Thanks,

Try removing the settings from your firewall, add them again & see whether that fixes anything. Restart your computer & then restart LW after you change your firewall rules.

Have you tried doing any of the fixes in the 'If LW Will Not Connect' thread? Maybe you just need to delete your preferences folder...that's a great fix for connection problems. And it might mean that you don't have to keep reinstalling LW??:)

Save the port forwarding for last, because that's the most complicated thing to do & it's worth trying all the other easier fixes first;)

Hi Birdy:

I have tried several of them except the Preference folder that you mentioned. I will do that first and see what happens and let you know.

I'll follow your list in order and see which one works.

Thanks a bunch,

Hi birdy and forum members:

Well I tried a number of things and finally Limewire is connecting again. Start-up for Limewire and reconfiguring the port-forwarding for both the firewall and the 2wire router.

Since re-starting Limewire, I now have a problem with accessing files that are showing 4 stars and at top of list:

Limewire states in the download section that the files are busy, need more sources, downloads part way and quits and so on. This has been happening with many files. Did an experiment of popular files and they just won't download. Out of 10 files, I only could download one.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem?

Thanks,

Hi katydidit,

There are lots of fake (& also infected) files spammed on the network - it sounds like you might be seeing those. There are companies employed to upload fake files - to discourage the use of p2p. Check out the links below for more info.

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/294637-post2.html
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...note-them.html
Fake files showing up in search results

Try using this hostiles list & see whether that makes a difference: The TechNutopia Fullsize Hostiles List for BearShare and LimeWire

Also, try varying your search terms when looking for music. Try using the 'All Types' search - look for artist or album name, rather than song title. Try downloading a file with 10 sources or less. Try a modem or T1 source, rather than a T3 source.

Also, try downloading an older song...see whether you have the same thing happen. Often, it's popular/new files that bring up this spam.

Don't forget to check files with Bitzi - even though music files aren't rated as often as movie or program files, other users might've rated the files as useless;)
How to use Bitzi

Hi birdy:

Well I added the hostiles.txt file to C:\D&S\Name\ApplicationData\Limewire. I hope this is the correct place to put the file.

I usually look for old songs and very rarely any new stuff. I also use the album search all the time. Don't usually do "songs titles" too much.

I've been monitoring my bandwidth and trying to figure out where it is all going and it appears that Limewire is sucking it up like a "tonne". I've never seen it do this. This is just a recent problem (last 3-4 months).

As mentioned, I've opened the ports within my 2-wire router and Limewire has gone nuts uploading (Hits column is travelling at light speed with all the uploads - some songs 1500 hits in less than 1/2 hour). Also, I was trying to download one song and it has already used about 15 MB of bandwidth (uploading and downloading combined). The song is only about 6,500 KBs.

This is really weird behaviour. Normally Limewire or other P2P programs don't suck up this much bandwidth.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problems?

Thanks,

birdy October 11th, 2008 10:00 PM

That's the right place to put the file:)

I'm not too sure about your sudden bandwidth use, maybe someone else here would have more ideas??

Do you have a wireless network & if so, is it secure (ie do you have a WAP or WEP key set within your router configuration, so that other people can't connect to your wireless network unless they have the password)??

What I'm getting at is - is there a chance that someone (a neighbour maybe) might be able to connect to your network & use your bandwidth??

katydidit October 11th, 2008 10:23 PM

Hi birdy:

Yes, I did have that problem. Looked at everything on my system and I have a good idea about how much uploading and downloading I do on a daily basis. My 2wire router was configured for both ethernet and wireless. I never used the wireless at all, so I solved that problem by disconnecting the wireless completely.

I've also installed a net meter to monitor everything I do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Next was to continue to monitor all programs, e.g. Limewire and others for bandwidth usage. It turns out that Limewire has been sucking up way too much bandwidth. This could have been part of the bandwidth problem but I couldn't tell until I first disconnected the wireless and by process of elimination have found Limewire is also doing some "sucking" of bandwidth.

I don't remember Limewire ever doing this? The song I was downloading from Limewire tonight is only 6,500 KBs and so far it has taken about 18 - 20 MBs of my bandwidth (at last count)????

This is really odd? I've posted a question for "bandwidth usage" over in Downloading/Uploading for Lord of the Rings.

I've had to remove Limewire's port forwarding because that was one of the reasons the hits were going like mad. As soon as I did that the "hits column" stopped its fast pace and slowed down??? Whether or not this will effect how it is connected, I'm not too sure.

Always welcome suggestions,

Thanks,

:mad2: :( :bangh: :sos: Hi I'm using a custom built 3.2GHZ, 2GB SYS Win XP- Home, Avast home free anti virus program, Limewire Pro 4.18.8. I have completely shut down my Win Firewall, as well as my AT&T 2Wire Router literally but Limewire keeps telling me I am behind a Firewall and Direct connect is NOT even an option due to it says I am behind a firewall. I have uninstalled and re-installed started from scratch. Can somebody PLEASE help me here I really want my Direct connect back. I am completely new to this site so it I am having problems finding my way around it so please be patient with me too thanks. I am more of a hardware Tech, instead of software LOL thanks a lot to anyone who can help.

birdy February 1st, 2010 06:54 PM

Any chance that you may also have AT&T's internet security suite (which includes a firewall)? From what I can gather, it comes free with some internet plans.

Could you please give us these system details: System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

Hello again, now that the desktop is fixed could you please help me with the same problem on the Limewire Pro 4.18.8 refusal to "Direct Connect" like the desktop. My Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9100 (gaming system) with 3.4GHZ processor 2GB Ram. 250GB hard drive with a fresh installation of Win XP PRO. I have already done the OFFLINE changes on my laptop. All it has is Avast Home Ed as well with NO security software, I even tried turning off XP PRO's Firewall but the Limewire Pro 4.18.8 still says it is behind a firewall and refuses to Direct Connect. Please let me know if you can be of assistance. THANKS

Do you mean that you've updated/reinstalled Java using the JRE offline installer?

I'm not sure what fixed the problem for the desktop ( either deleting prefs or reinstalling/updating Java?) If reinstalling Java worked for the desktop but didn't help with the laptop, try deleting preferences folder on the laptop when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

You'll know if the prefs folder has been deleted properly... when you start up LW, all settings (within tools > options) will have reverted to default.

Hello again, I uninstalled Java, uninstalled Limewire PRO 4.18.8, did the offline download of the Java you recommended installed it, rebooted, re-installed Limewire Pro 4.18.8 and all is good on the desktop it got rid of the Firewall problem. I tried all the same processes on the Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop: New Just installed 250GB Fresh install of XP PRO, 3.40GHZ, 2GB 9700 Radeon video w/ 256MB Memory, only software Anti-virus software is Avast Home ED 2010 same as Desktop. But it still has the claim of behind a firewall despite the fact there's no firewall on Router, and Win XP Pro's Firewall is turned off.

ukbobboy01 February 3rd, 2010 04:35 AM

Have you switched on (or ticked) the UPnP option in LW, Windows XP Pro and on your Router?

Routers almost always have built-in NAT support which acts like a firewall to block port access coming inward. I presume your router is set to UPnP so LW communicates with the router to open a listening port whilst LW is open. There is a chance the UPnP is not working properly with the laptop for some reason.

AFAIK I believe it is possible to port forward for the 2wire device just for the laptop, whilst the desktop can still use UPnP. That's guessing from port forward instructions I've seen for 2Wire. But we'd need to know your 2wire device model number. :)
