Processor Usage Hello Peepes, i am having a problem with limewire 4.18.8 actually running on my computer, it will run fine for about an hour, then it will lock up (no download/upload) and use 100% of the processor and i wont be able to do anything else until i either manage to close it or set the process priority as low, i am running winxp pro sp3, AMD 2gig athlon64, 2gb memory and almost 1tb hdd, have had little to no problems with the program before but now it just seems to be draining system resources for no real reason, i have updated the programs that i use (WinXP, java, divx, macromedia, nero 7 premium etc) to the latest versions and this made no difference to the running of limewire, please please please help as i have got used to this program and would hate to have to change again... many thanks in advance  |
See if your Java is up to date: Java Downloads for All Operating Systems - Sun Microsystems if not, update it using the OFFLINE installer (15 MB download.) Also, things that can cause drain on LW & thus the computer are these things, tips: 1. Tip: Purge the Downloads Queue! (click on blue link) 2. Disable all the Performance options under Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Performance. 3. A possibility is also disabling Tools -> Options -> Speed -> OOB. 4. Some other small things that can help, optional of course: * Set both uplds & downlds to autoclear. * Close all old searche tabs. * Close all LW windows you don't need open at that time. eg: Connections window. * Monitor window -> Disable showing incoming searches. * If you're not in front of your comp, then hide LW in the dock/tray. * Reduce uplds to about 70-80% or more. Reduce downlds to 80 or 90%. A large number of incompletes can certainly cause drag on the program & cpu. Too many shares 'might' also have this effect depending on your system. (I share over 7,000 files.) The Resume/Find Sources function is well known for causing extra cpu use, I rarely use these functions personally. The basic search function backed up with 'Get More Results' works well for me. And now that LW has a periodic auto find sources function, resuming files should not be necessary. Keep in mind also that since LW is continually downloading partial files, the hard disk drive(s) become fragmented very quickly. You should defragment your drives now & again. If you are saving files to your system drive, then if that's highly fragmented, it WILL slow the system down. |
