That same connection issue as everyone else

I'm getting that message about the Firewall blocking LW..
Here's my details -

1. OS version? Windows XP SP 3
2. What firewalls you have? Comodo
3. How much ram? 256 K (I can hear you laughing)
4. Hard Disk space available? [B****** - 5.17 GB [/B]
5. Connection type? Broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem - Model #? umm.. dunno
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Plain ol' house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.18.8 - Can't tell you my Java version as it keeps shutting my IE when I try to detect it. Odd, huh?
9. Who is your ISP? AT&T
10. Do this simple test for us. Test worked
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? No.. none other than LW
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. New problem.. semi-experienced
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? I don't see that at all.. LW won't open
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? I'm using a router, but I don't know what you mean by set up. Ummmm.. the normal way?
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? AVG 8.5.. The free one.
16. What country are you living in? US of A
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? To the best of my knowledge, nothing changed prior to my issue.

What I've done so far -

Updated Java to the latest version. Now I'm having OTHER issues.

Disabled Firewall via the Task Manager and tried LW... Same issue

Disabled Virus Scanner and tried LW.. Same issue

Deleted and wiped LW from system and reinstalled.. same issue

I can't actually open LW, so I can't change my prefs or purge the queue or any of that.

Thoughts? Further questions? Options to try?

Any assistance would be helpful! Thanks!

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2008 11:35 PM

This is more a windows or installation issue than a connection issue. :)
I know you reinstalled Java, but try again using suggestions in the next link http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post333278 Remove 'all' versions of Java after having downloaded the OFFLINE versions of both LW & Java. :)

Oh another step to add before reinstalling LW is deleting your LW preferences folder. The instructions are in a link at bottom of the above linked-post. :)

BTW is there any other security programs you have installed lately such as anti-spyware programs? Depending on which one, some are not designed to cope with p2p programs & think they are spyware (poor programming or poor attitude by the programmers) & may damage the LW program by removing parts of it or simply prevent it opening (LW would need to be put on their 'safe' list.)

Grishnak01 December 10th, 2008 09:43 AM

I didn't re-install Java, I updated my Java, but I'll try those suggestions.

I did delete my preference folder.. that .limewire folder. I did it when I uninstalled. That very informative post told me to wipe all reference to LW after uninstall and pre-reinstall.

Other than AVG, I don't have any other Virus scanners running. Also, I cleared it out of running via the Task Manager. LW still gave me the message with my AVG not running.

All right.. let me try that Java thing and I'll get back to you.

Thanks!

Edit: Went through all the steps, and I still get the 'Firewall program blocking access' message. And that item about deleting old versions of Java and re-installing solved that weird Java issue I was having.. thanks for THAT!

Lord of the Rings December 10th, 2008 12:44 PM

You need to make an exception in your firewall to allow LW. And turn windows firewall off if it's on, you only need one. User Cant Connect - LimeWire IF still problems then it might be your modem/router at fault. Can also check If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link)

carolyn353 December 10th, 2008 05:16 PM

I have windows vista, I just got the pro limewire today hoping that it would fix the connection problem and it didn't! I checked to make sure that it was allowed on my firewall and it is!! Please help me I miss limewire!! It only goes to one green bar, even if it's left on all day it still won't connect any more then that!!!

Grishnak01 December 10th, 2008 11:47 PM

It's been excepted.. both on my Firewall and on my Virus Scanner. I went through and put it everywhere it could place it.

In regards to the router, I've been using the same one for about a year now.. and this issue with LW happened within the last few weeks. Prior to a couple of weeks ago, I was using LW just fine.

I only use the one Firewall. I'd heard that they conflict.

Did you try replacing the gnutella.net file? Did you try disabling all performance options? :)

Check the links I posted above. :) Try all those things. Cannot help more without more details either. ;)

Grishnak01 December 11th, 2008 08:55 AM

Couldn't disable the performance options as it wouldn't open... but.. guess what?

I didn't have that Gnutella.net file.. I d/l and placed it in the folder.. and... guess what?

IT WORKED!! I'm now able to open and use it.

THANK YOU LotR! Dude.. you rock! :aweof:

I wonder how that went missing?

Grishnak01 December 20th, 2008 09:37 AM

So.. guess what.. it started giving me that box again. After I fixed it last time, I opened it up.. Made sure it was working.. then shut it.
Daughter went to use it. And it was doing that again.
So.. THIS time, I replaced the Gnutella.net file. Restarted.. still didn't work. Deleted the LimeWire folder.. restarted.. Didn't work.
Now what?

Lord of the Rings December 20th, 2008 09:42 AM

Have you tried purging your incomplete files, & also turning performance options off. If too many incomplete files can affect connection (UPnP fails.) (UPnp communicates with the modem/router to open a port for LW, but if too many incomplete files attempting to connect it can flood the communication with the router & UPnP fails.)

How many accounts do you have on your computer? If you have more than one, try using LW on one of those, else set up a test account. If LW connects, then copy 'that' gnutella.net file across to the other account. (I'd have suggested preferences folder, however the pointing of LW to a location the other account cannot access might cause permission issues.)

Grishnak01 December 20th, 2008 10:33 AM

I didn't have any incomplete files as I didn't download anything after the uninstall - re-install. But I checked and it was empty.
And I didn't change any performance options when I opened it. I just confirmed it connected and off I went.

I'll look into the other account thing and I'll get back to you.

nicknj6 December 20th, 2008 01:32 PM

morose

nicknj6, my personal firewall must have kicked in i'm unable to understand. as easy as the basic was, i'm very sorry lm is not more user friendly w\payed users if someone cares enough to try and lift me up and help the slower tumor boy i'm willing to try again if not well this may be my first and last chat i've loved the exp. as well as the site (third finger)

Grishnak01 January 2nd, 2009 09:45 AM

So.. on another account, it opens up but cannot connect. But we had to download it as they didn't have LW on their account.

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 01:47 AM

Instead of installing twice, you can make a shortcut from the programs folder. ;) Doesn't mater though. :)

* Go into LW's settings, Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Firewalls, make sure both the listening & connection ports listed are different to LW in all other accounts.

Grishnak01 January 3rd, 2009 09:55 AM

lmao.. ummm.. we have since deleted that account off the computer. Do I now have to re-re install LW on a 'Dummy' account?

nicknj6 January 3rd, 2009 09:57 AM

hi lord ,nicknj6 hello everyone hope you all had remarkable holidays. i finally got the pref folder deleted yeah!! still firewall it seems to hang on. i don't think there are any other acct but lw my coat tail is long pull on my brother

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 10:23 AM

Are you related to Grishnak01? Is he your brother? Just help to know if same computer. :)

Are you both using the same account or different one? I'm confused as to whether either of your accounts can open & connect with LW now.

hi lord, don;t you just love hearing my voice? i saw the listening port but how do i access the connect port sorry but what other acct's might i look for i was hoping you would'nt leave me out here to longhttp://www.gnutellaforums.com/images/editor/smilie.gif

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 10:41 AM

Our posts seem to be spread across the forums at moment. lol

The Connect port is in same part. A sample image can be seen in this link: Manual port forward instructions & sample image

I thought you had two accounts with a LW in each running on the computer, that's why I made the suggestion.

nicknj6 January 3rd, 2009 11:47 AM

thanx lord,nicknj6 tried that sucessfully but smokey is still there i changed both lit & connect to same number please tell me that was right!

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 12:07 PM

Listening port is the main one. If they are connecting fine, no problem. :)

Grishnak01 January 5th, 2009 09:18 AM

No.. Nick is no relation to me..
To get his issue resolved, he MIGHT should open his own thread listing all his stats and computer type etc etc. :shoot:

Back to my issue -

No.. we only have one account with LW on it. We had a 2nd user for a while, and we d/l LW to that account and tried it. He was able to open it up, but was unable to connect. We have since deleted that user from the computer.
Do you wish me to create another 'dummy' user and try some things, or do you have enough info to continue?

Lord of the Rings January 5th, 2009 09:38 AM

Go to LW's menu bar, Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Firewalls, change the listening port to one between 49152 - 65535. Go to File menu, disconnect, wait a minute, then file menu connect. Any luck?

I'll be away for a few weeks, but others will be around. :)

hi Grishnak at a lost as to your message? Lord hurry up this way again!

rayray935 January 5th, 2009 12:03 PM

Lime Wire says it is still tryig to connect but never does

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.

So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows Vista Administrator
2. What firewalls you have? Verizon Internet security
3. How much ram? 3G
4. Hard Disk space available? 45 Gig
5. Connection type? broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Actiointech m1424
7. Where are you trying to connect from. home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) LW 4.18.1 Java 1.6.0 01
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Verizon
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says "test werked"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. Experieced user
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Yes
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? dont know

15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...lies/smile.gifVerizon Internet Security
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). USA
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? No

This information can be vitalhttp://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...es/biggrin.gif
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth, some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions, or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...ilies/wink.gif
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

What is UP with the thread hijackers?? :mad2:

If you wish a problem to be resolved, you should start your own thread as it'll be easier for the helpers to track.
Go out of this thread and click on 'Start Thread' and THEN post all of your details.
Unfortunately, my issue isn't resolved as of yet.. So, any extraneous posting will confuse the helpers.

Now....

The question on the table for the next person to pick up where LotR left off is... Do you have enough information to continue, or should I open a dummy user to d/l LW again and try it?

Don't sweat about it - thread takeover is a fact of life here. It will never stop.

This thread is very hard to read, don't kill me if I'm not exactly sure what your problem is but as I read it, you can open LW now, but it's still unable to initialise & start. Is that right?

What's the brand & model of your router?

You said that you deleted the .limewire preferences folder & later the LimeWire prefs folder... delete the LimeWire again.

Did you change the listening port as LOTR suggested?

Try reverting to an earlier version of Java & see whether that makes any difference. Try this version: Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11
Download the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before installing another one.
If it doesn't change anything, you can always reinstall the latest Java.

If nothing there helps, set up another account & install LW to that. Once LW's installed, go tools > options > advanced > firewall. Change LW's listening port to 65000 > tick 'use UPnP' > Apply > ok. See if that connects. If it doesn't connect, back into advanced > firewall > tick 'manual port forward' & enter LW's listening port into the text field > Apply > ok.

And if nothing works, try this older version of LW. It's safe to download (one of my installers that I've hosted). Sometimes different versions work when others don't, for unknown reasons: LW basic 4.16.0.exe

I stopped sweating once I let it all out ;)

Don't worry man.. I ain't gonna hurt someone trying to help. The threadjackers confused the issue. I THINK the listening port thing was for the other yahoo who had an issue.
I don't know if we're saying the same thing.. but my issue is that when I attempt to start LW, I get a message that states that my firewall is blocking it. I can't access any functions of any kind. Once it tells me that, LW closes, so any changes I need to make will be outside of LW itself.

As to the Brand and Model # of my router.. Ummmm.. to be honest I don't remember.. I installed it well over a year ago and it's currently on the back side of the computer buried behind my modem. It'd take some serious contortions to get the number offa there. This is a relatively new problem and had been using LW just fine with that router and I hadn't changed any configurations with it.

Ok.. going to do the Java thing and/or the dummy user / options trick and see what happens.. I'll get back to you. I'll also do the listening ports thing as after re-reading the thread, it WAS directed at me and I missed it for the aforementioned reason.

Thank you Birdy!

Grishnak01 January 7th, 2009 11:11 PM

LW works just fine on the Dummy account.. This is after a fresh install.
Now.. how do I get it to work on my REAL account?

In regards to the Java thing.. I upgraded my Java per LotR. LW wasn't working on the step down OR the step up.

Well.. lookie lookie cookie.. It's running again on the Main account. Listening port isn't changed like I had on the Dummy account. That's oddness and oddness.

Ok.. let's see if it's still working in a week. The jury's still out. :p

Thank you LotR and Birdy!

Grishnak01 January 20th, 2009 09:40 AM

Ok.. as an update... Birdy and LotR resolved the issue. We've been using LW for a couple of weeks now with no issue.

Thanks again you guys! You rock! :xeri_ok1ani:
