Lord, Birdy or someone out there (still not connecting)

still having connection problem. I am still not connecting. Can you believe it? I have xp and Windows Live OneCare. I also have the windows security center. In the security center it says some controls are controlled under a group policy. What does that mean? I am still getting the one green bar and no connection to LW. My son and I would greatly appreciate your help.

Hi 1guy
In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- if still no good click on (system details) fill in and post back here

Thread merged... please keep all of your posts about one topic in the same thread, otherwise it's confusing ;)

sounds like a firewall is blocking you -- check that your router firewall is configured to accept Limewire as well as your software firewall. Also you should have replied in the thread of your first post -- this way we have continuity of your problem. Let us know how you get on

where do i check that?

birdy December 22nd, 2008 08:34 PM

Did you try changing port numbers? Your port test failed, so something's 'blocking' LW's default port. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall > change LW's listening port to 65000 > apply > ok.

Windows Live OneCare comes with a firewall. So does XP.
You need to make sure that there's only one software firewall running on your computer.... so you need to turn off either XP's firewall or WLOC firewall:)

To check which firewall's turned on control panel > security centre. You'll see the firewall status (on or off). To check which firewall's turned on, click on the little arrows pointing down, beside the firewall.

To turn off the XP firewall go to control panel > windows firewall > click on the 'off' button > ok.

I don't use WLOC but I found this info about turning off the firewall: How do I disable the Windows OneCare firewall? :: Free Tech Support from Ask Dave Taylor!

Your Motorola has it's own firewall. You don't have to turn that off, but you might need to try port forwarding, if using UPnP isn't reliable. First thing you need to do is to set up a static IP address. See here: PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Once you have the static IP address set up, then you can port forward. See here: Port Forwarding for the Motorola SBG 900

Remember... LW's listening port, port in LW's 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within your router setup must all be the same number;)

that one guy December 22nd, 2008 09:26 PM

I followed the steps to set up static ip, but afterward, I couldn't connect to internet.

that one guy December 22nd, 2008 09:29 PM

in windows security ctr it says some of my controls are controlled under a group policy. What does this mean? My security ctr. firewall is grayed out. I cannot disable that one. When I disable the onecare firewall, then that also turns the windows firewall off.:whistling:Thanks for your help birdy. I feel l;ike we are almost there. please help me.

birdy December 22nd, 2008 11:37 PM

I have no idea about group policy - sorry:o
I did find these links, maybe they will be some help?
Group Policy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://forums.techarena.in/windows-x...rt/1082948.htm
http://www.theeldergeek.com/group_po...ws_xp_prof.htm
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb457149.aspx

Or you could use Google to search & you might find more info.

Are you sure that you did the static IP setup correctly? It's just that when I first did it (with XP) I got it wrong & didn't realise until I went back through the steps & double checked everything.

Like I said, I don't understand the group policy thing - so I can't understand why you can't change firewall settings if you have an admin account. Maybe someone else here will know?

Did you try changing LW's listening port?

that one guy December 23rd, 2008 07:05 AM

still nothing

Lord of the Rings December 23rd, 2008 09:40 AM

Need to check your ISP allows static ip's. Some don't.
Setting up a Static ip is where most people get it wrong. But this 'must' be done first before port forwarding can be done.
I can tell you there's been many users on these forums using same brand & model of router with problems. Just discovered why, SURFboard SBG900 - Motorola. The Motorola SBG900 does not support UPnP thus needs to be port forwarded or port triggered.

Apparently the SBG 900 does have a firewall configuration to set high, medium or low. See page 27 of manual.
Motorola SBG900 Manual = http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...User_Guide.pdf (2.9 MB acrobat PDF file)
Port Forwarding on page 44 or Port Triggering p.48). TCP/UDP combined should be chosen. Port to choose, choose one between 49152 - 65535, such as 64049. Reciprocate this port in the LW advanced -> Firewall setting for connection & listening ports.

Verifying ip address, page 62 of manual. ie: 1. Start menu, 2. Select Run, Type cmd & click OK. 3. Type ipconfig & press enter to display ip configuration.

* Port Triggering is slightly different to port forwarding. Not sure whether static ip is required for port triggering but would imagine so because most of these settings are based on ip address of particular computer or user. However I do not see a particular ip address entry point. So perhaps this is an alternative option. ;)

* One thing I discovered whilst browsing the pdf manual is you 'do' need to reboot the router for changes to take effect. ;) (p.76 of manual) This used to also be true with my 'old' router.

I had trouble setting up a static ip address. I would put one in, but then I couldn't log on to the web.Any suggestions?

that one guy December 23rd, 2008 03:24 PM

Hey guys the test link finally works. Where do I go from here?

Lord of the Rings December 23rd, 2008 03:27 PM

Do you still see a brick wall icon at bottom of LW? Will it connect at all?

If not, you could replace the gnutella.net file. If still no connection, install FrostWire & see if that connects. If it does, copy the gnutella.net file from the FrostWire preferences folder across & replace the one in the LW preferences folder. ;) (LW would need to be closed whilst you do this.)

Yes the brick wall is still there. No connection at all. Also LOTR, I don't see a gnutella file in the LW preferences folder.

that one guy December 23rd, 2008 03:51 PM

Frostwire does not connect ither.

Lord of the Rings December 23rd, 2008 04:29 PM

You will find one half way down this page: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link), else in the FW preferences folder. However if it's not connecting, then something is wrong. Did you set the port in FrostWire same as LimeWire? Normally only one application should use a specific port forwarded port, however, FrostWire will also not be able to find an open port for listening. Another firewall rule with a different port for FrostWire is probably needed. O.o Same process but just different port forward number. You already have a static ip so you will not need to do that again, if you did it correctly. And of course enter this port into FW's advanced firewall section.

Perhaps turn your router's firewall security down to 'Low'. Could even turn it off just as an experiment to see if that makes a difference. (think you need to reboot the router again though for the router to use the changes.)

When I try to download zshare, it says the webpage cannot be displayed. When I try to download the 2nd one, all I get is a bunch of #s.???

that one guy December 23rd, 2008 05:00 PM

How can I find out if I have a static ip?

that one guy December 23rd, 2008 05:12 PM

Also, my ip add. is the same as my LAN. What does this mean? I'm sorry Lord for being so computer illiterate. I appreciate your patience.

Lord of the Rings December 23rd, 2008 05:13 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Unzip the attachment, place first one inside the LW prefs folder. The second zip inside is secondary option just in case.

As long as your ip address is not the same as your router ip address, or same as any other computer on the LAN, then that should be fine.
Example, my internal ip address is 10.1.1.2. I think the other computers on the lan are like 10.1.1.3, 10.1.1.4, etc.
My router's address is 10.1.1.1

It tells me this is a corrupted file and closes out of it.

Lord of the Rings December 23rd, 2008 05:30 PM

The above attachment downloads & opens fine for me.

BTW if your router address is 192.168.100.1, then your computer's internal ip address should be something like 192.168.100.2 or similar. ;)

that one guy December 23rd, 2008 05:36 PM

I re-installed LW and it is there now.
