ISP does not allow Limewire to work - how can I get past this?

I've just switched to a new ISP that is free through my university. Getting the internet to work was not straightforward - had to go into options and change the proxy and port settings, and got the internet working fine.

However, I haven't been able to get Limewire to work (and neither of my friends have either!). I changed the proxy settings in the advanced options, but still no joy. My ISP requires a username and password to connect, so I thought maybe that might have something to do with it? I also heard that the university network doesn't allow file downloads (movies, music, etc).

Any ideas on how I can get Limewire working? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Here are the additional details:

1. OS version? Windows vista, and yes I have an Administrator account
2. What firewalls you have? McAfee firewall. Never had problems with Limewire going through the firewall before.
3. How much ram? 3GB
4. Hard Disk space available? 170GB
5. Connection type? wireless broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Not sure sorry
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Trying to connect to university wireless from student accomodation
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire 5.0.11 and Java 1.6.0_12
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Otago University, Dunedin, NZ (not sure if this is through a third party or not)
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says "your test worked!"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? Sharing the connection with hundreds/thousands of other university students
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user? I've been using Limewire for years on various computers, about 1 year on this computer. It always worked fine with my old ISP, just stopped working now that I've switched.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Using Limewire 5 so don't see it. I am using a firewall through McAfee on my computer but have never had problems with it before. I don't know whether the university network has its own firewall or not.
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Not sure, sorry!
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? McAfee Antivirus
16. What country are you living in? New Zealand
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have only just downloaded the new version of Limewire, just before I changed ISP. New Limewire was working on my old ISP but isn't working now.

Hope that's enough info for you :-) I'm happy to give more info if needed.
Thanks so much!

yes please more details ... birth date, passport number lol only joking. :D :p

Using proxies with p2p sharing is a very hit & miss scenario. Mostly missing. So you need to keep trying until you find one that works.

Best reference to it you will find here A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions. I think page 2 or 3 I threw together links that have discussed this on the forums. Tor from memory seems a very good one. :)

As far as your mcafee goes .. make sure it's allowed thru Setting up an exception for LimeWire in your software firewall (click in link), & wise to disable Vista's firewall. Even though I think McAfee say both work well together, with LW it might be different.
