Help with firewall /IP for downloading torrents

Hello:

First, my user name says it all. If posting a response PLEASE keep it ultra simple. I've been searching/reading the forum and stickies trying to find help for the past 3 hours and feel close to tears. The tech answers go way over my head...

Here's the Issue:
I want to use Limewire to download a few torrents occasionally. (I've read it isn't the best program for torrents, but working OK will be fine, since I plan to do this a few times a year, and don't want to download/reconfigure new software like "bittorrent")

But while downloads start off pretty quick, they peter to 0-4 kbs. From my reading, I think it has to do with a firewall, my IP address and needing to force it so people can see I'm sharing and will allow me to download faster...

Can anyone walk me through this for my specific setup? (the other posts I read used different routers or had different systems like windows...)I would SO much appreciate the help!

Here's my specs
1.
OS version? Mac 10.5.6 PowerPC (not Intel, so I can't use Limewire 5)
2. What firewalls you have? Whatever came with system
3. How much ram? 768 (I think) 256 built in
4. Hard Disk space available? 20 GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) satellite
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Airport Extreme
In my system profiler is says AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x4E) but I think that's the carn in the laptop. I'd have to unplug my internet to find model number on the Base Station. If this is needed I can add later... (If it helps I bought it new in 04)
7. Where are you trying to connect from? House, but also sometimes from the road (coffehouse with free wifi etc...)
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have?
Limewire 4.18
Java 1.5.0_16
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Hughesnet is the satellite company. But our ISP is mindspring/earthlink. (They used to handle sat too, but now we go directly thru hughes)
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ Said 'Your test worked!'.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. My husband and I share the wireless connection thru airport extreme.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I've use LW to download songs. NEW to torrents...
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes, firewall thru Mac system _
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? umm? Don't know this is one of the things I need help with...
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Nothing. Need to upgrade Antivirus for this system....
16. What country are you living in? US
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? Nope.

THANKS!!!!!

wanted to add...

I should probably mention that my IP address changes. We turn off the satellite each night (solar house/conserving electricity...) When I turn it back on whatismyIP.com tell me it's a different IP than before.

But I can reconfigure with the right number each time I download torrents if needed.

Thanks in advance!

Kept searching/reading web pages and finally concluded Limewire REALLY doesn't work well for bit torrents. So I downloaded Tranmission and seem to be getting from 20-60 kb/s (I was getting 0-14 with Limewire) So, that's good enough for me...

Thanks anyway -- Jami

Nice to see see you came to your senses. To anyone reading this, I've said this before and I'll say it again:

LIMEWIRE IS NOT A PROPER BITTORENT CLIENT

I've heard Transmission is quite a good program. I've never used it. I use Azureus (now called Vuse) for OSX. AFAIK Vuse is recognised all across the torrent world. Transmission might be easier to use for the beginners. Though with Vuse you can run it in basic, intermediate & advanced mode. :)
