LimeWire Pirate Edition not connecting?

Recently LimeWire Pirate Edition (LPE) for several people has had problems connecting. I believe LPE uses a bootstrap server to help LPE users connect in a similar way to how the LimeWire company had bootstrap servers for 4.18 and 5 to connect. And everyone knows what happened when the LimeWire company shut down their bootstrap servers in late 2010.

It is my guess either the LPE bootstrap server is no longer functioning or is over-loaded. Anybody's guess. Possibly under some kind of attack. (That is if one was being used.)

It is still possible to connect with LPE if you obtain a fresh gnutella.net file. If http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html does not work for you, then I have created a temporary fix. Once you get connected again, your connection problems will be solved for the near future. If using Windows 7 or later, Java needs to be set to Run as Administrator or problems connecting.

Fresh Gnutella.net file for connecting

gnutella.net file, 2012 (4shared) or Mirror 1 (Ezfile) or Mirror 2 (mediafire). Download and put into your LimeWire preferences folder:

Instructions on how to replace the gnutella.net file:

Mac OSX . and . Windows users see the 'REPLACE gnutella.net FILE' section of http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

Installers to do the work for you?

Mac OSX: MacOSX Gnutella Connect Fix, 2012 (4shared) Unzip and double-click the program installer. Or alternative links: here (Ezfile) or here (mediafire).

Windows: Windows Gnutella Connect Fix, 2012 (4shared) or alternative links: here (mediafire) and here (Ezfile) or here (uploaded).

Linux: See this post for the download links for a Linux connection fix installer.

Note: These are not self-updating installers like the ones I created last year.

Worked fine, thanks!

Lord of the Rings February 19th, 2012 03:04 AM

Good to hear. Thanks for letting us know. :) Which option did you use may I ask? :)

cbb February 19th, 2012 03:40 AM

Just replaced gnutella.net, Windows 7.
A hint: there's a faster way to get to the Application Data directory.
Click on the start button, and type %APPDATA% in the textbox.
An Explorer window opens on the Application Data dir.
Cheers,
cbb

Is C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire\browser\xul runner\defaults\pref the path you speak of? I see no folder specifically labeled preferences in any LimeWire directories.

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2012 08:39 AM

Click on the Start button > type %appdata% into the text field > ok. You should now see a lot of folders - find the one named LimeWire ... that is your preferences folder.
The gnutella.net file is situated in that folder. The folder itself is not called preferences, simply LimeWire.
The appdata\roaming is where preferences for most of your programs will be stored. Doubtful any of them will have the word preferences suffixed at the end of their title.
ie:
C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\AppData\Roaming\Limewire

Harvey Dent November 8th, 2012 09:06 AM

Ohh okay. Thanks. I just did everything and it still isn't connecting. I didn't use your gnutella.net file links because the first one requires registration and the second one is broken. Can you confirm if this one is accurate?

FrostWire Community Forums • View topic - Replacement of gnutella.net file for Frostwire 4

The link is about 15 or so lines down. It's in big blue type. Can't miss it. Thanks in advance for your help.

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2012 10:20 AM

Yeah same process. Either would probably be fine. I update mine every couple of weeks or more plus all static hosts. Depending on whether you are using FrostWire or LW there are connection installers to install the gnutella file anyway.

Which gnutella link was dead? There was a mishap a couple days ago and I had to re-upload everything and change the links on the forum. I may have missed a couple of links to update. Oh, nvm you mean the one in the first post above. Updated as of now and added a 3rd alternative.

oops .. I checked that gnutella connection file out from the FrostWire site forum and it has 26 hosts from known spam companies. And that was just a quick check. :wasntme:
I know because they are using port 27016 which is only used by certain spam companies. I also saw a few other host addresses which looked suspicious.

Harvey Dent November 8th, 2012 10:58 AM

And just like that, I'm back in business :yahoo: You sir truly are The Lord of the Rings. The LimeSlice Rings :super: LW has went defunct for me sometime in the summer. You mentioned you update your gnutella file every few weeks. Is there a reason for this? Does gnutella go haywire every so often. I've been using LWPE since late 2010 & it just went lights out on me this year. Does constantly updating the gnutella file help keep LW consistently faster?

P.S Are you a Linux Guru?

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2012 11:44 AM

Good to hear. :)

If you have not used any LW 5 version for 30 days it will delete the connection file. However you can get File_Girl71's LW-Fix2 to prevent this from happening.

You should not need to continually update the connection file. Not unless your connection file somehow gets full of part-time/casual users or users with highly dynamic addresses or spam hosts lol.

The gnutella file I provide: I have left the gnutella file as is for 3 to 5 months at a time. But some of these hosts on the list stop using the network. And with lots of people using the connection files, obtaining fresh data is helpful. Even with static hosts the list can begin to show signs of not being as effective. I added a lot to the list 6 weeks or so ago, but I think some of my choices were a little hasty so I've been slowly adding what I believe are reliable hosts. For example, those who connect for several days at a time during the week, and not those whom might only connect on the weekend or be possibly only trying the network out for a short time. I also try to choose hosts I do not believe are in any way related to spammers or hostile hosts. So in short, I try to be very selective. Finding static hosts is not in itself easy.

Edit: off-topic: I fixed a small bug in the OSX connectionfix installers that had existed since September when I added the launch FrostWire button on the last menu. Unlike LW, the FW devs set FW to use an old method for identifying its application on OSX (and my scripting to handle this approach had an error though it worked.)

Blacklisting the freeloaders?

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2012 12:09 PM

I don't blacklist freeloaders. For my own personal use I may temporarily ban some hosts whom annoy me because they are greedy and are freeloaders. lol My upload slots tend to be quite busy, so having someone try to take them all for many videos when others are trying to download a single video or several music files, then I try to protect the less greedy ones. I have a few files with warning titles on them. If they ignore the warnings then ...

Harvey Dent November 8th, 2012 01:16 PM

Crafty lol. So, will the file you posted do that? Ban freeloaders from my shared files?

dielawn November 16th, 2012 11:53 AM

hello. Im pretty new to the new gnutella network thing and i've read and have done everything up to the fixes and getting LWPE installed and i am suck with the grey bars upon connection. any clues as to what to do? if more information is needed just tell me what you would like to know. thanks.

Lord of the Rings November 16th, 2012 03:17 PM

If nothing in http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html has helped, then provide these details: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...-you-post.html :)

Please note, if you are using Windows 7 or 8, you need to set your Java to Run as Administrator. For some reason this seems to affect LW connecting.

Possible Cause:
I have a suspicion your LPE was unable to connect due to a 64-bit Java 7 update. ie: LimeWire changed its location for the settings to top level of your user account with the name .limewire and your shared files also changed location to a folder called LimeWire also at top level of your user account. You can check this yourself. If yes then delete those folders. The normal location of the settings is in the appdata folder, not the top level of your user account. And your original LW shared folders will be within your 'My Documents' folder. Don't touch the original folder.

Possible Fix:
Go to the java site and look for the 32-bit java update. When you install it will probably say its already installed but install anyway. If using Vista or later, right-click the Java installer and choose 'Run as Administrator' if you use an administrator account.

Next time you start LPE all should be back to normal with any luck.

If after deleting the .limewire folder you are asked to do the setup again when you open LW, then all is not back to normal yet.
This seems to be a Java 7 issue.

Attachment 6331 (Folders underlined in red can be deleted if they exist. This is caused by a Java 7 issue.)

My Limewire Pirate version suddenly stopped working two days ago. I haven't changed anything in it at all. I have windows 7 64bit running java 1.6. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing program, connect fix, etc.
I am not sure what happened but I have not installed Java 1.7 because I didn't want to screw up Limewire....Now it stopped working on its own.
Any ideas on next step?

sleepybear91 May 9th, 2013 07:16 PM

LOTR, I also have not been able to connect for about a week. I've checked my Java control panel and it says it's running 32.1. Here again I have changed nothing on the computer. My last connection was aprx. April 27th. I Don't know what happened.

Lord of the Rings May 10th, 2013 02:07 AM

Have you tried a fresh connection install? via Hotfile or via MediaFire

nyrayski May 10th, 2013 03:09 PM

I think this was my problem as Limewire started to work again today

Lord of the Rings May 10th, 2013 03:36 PM

All the LW 5 & LPE versions suffer same issue, if not used for 30 or more days, as soon as you open the program it will delete the connection file as its opening.
I created LimeStart (for MacOSX a year ago) and several days ago for Windows. The Windows LimeStart operation is not quite as elegant or silent but it works fine. LimeStart changes the connection file's date so LW will not delete the file, then it launches LW.

I have LW on several Windows (2000, XP, 7, 8) and often had that problem of the connection file being deleted. The connection window would be empty, ie: LW not attempting to connect to any hosts because it had no list of hosts to connect to.

Good to hear you got connection back. :)

If sleepybear91's last connection was just a couple of weeks earlier, I'm not sure the cause. On some occasions a reboot can help with connections with LW or other similar programs. On my mac, sometimes LW starts up as being firewalled and does not lose that status. A relaunch usually fixes it but if not a reboot always does.

I used MediaFire's file. Worked great! Thanks!
About 3 months ago you gave me a link to file that negated the 30 day thing. It said it installed correctly, so I don't know why this happened again.

Upon testing, it turns out that fix did not work after all. It probably worked on File_Girl's computer because she had some kind of extra support software, but all my testing over many months showed it did not work after all. When it was installed it would install a connection file from late 2010, then when LW opened, LW would immediately delete the connection file which suggests it definitely did not work. Nor did it appear to do what it was designed to do. There had been some doubts a couple of years ago it worked as it was supposed to. I only started to test it out in more recent times.
Just the Windows LPE Connection Fix alone there's about 100 downloads per day. I would imagine if more people used LimeStart this number will probably drop. BTW the connection fix should be good enough to use for several months, perhaps half a year or up to a year. The file it installs is dated many years in advance and there are many reliable hosts on the list whom are permanent network users.

Good to hear you got your connection back. :)

.limewire was disused after LW 4.9 or so. The only time it might show is if you are running 64-bit Windows and update the 64-bit java last. If you do not see a java error window when you launch LW then chances are you did not install the 64-bit java last.

If you are using Vista or later, the java must be set to Run as Administrator. Search java.exe and right-click and choose that option. For some odd reason this has a big impact on LW connecting.

Have you tried the options here? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

normann June 11th, 2013 04:24 PM

thanx, but it connected suddenly afret i installed "LW 5 + LPE - LimeStart + Java Fix_Win" o.0

but thank you for your time:) :super:

normann June 23rd, 2013 03:33 PM

and its out again!:bangh:

Lord of the Rings June 23rd, 2013 10:24 PM

Are you using Vista or later? If you have not set java to run as administrator, then search for java.exe and set it to run as admin. This seems to make a big difference for connecting.

Paste %appdata%/LimeWire into the Run program or search window. Is there a gnutella file existent?

Try the connection fix again.

Ignore the you are not connected to network message on main window. The front window simply connected to the LW site in past which no longer exists. It previously gave messages from the LW site including updates.

Did you mean LPE 5.6.2 or one of the earlier betas 5.6.0 or 5.6.1?

normann June 24th, 2013 03:42 PM

using 562 win7x64

Lord of the Rings June 24th, 2013 04:18 PM

Is java set to run as admin? Seems to have an important effect on connecting.

And you tried the connection installer again?
Try the options in the LW5 Connection thread sticky in this forum section.

Also double-check your firewall. Some Windows updates can change firewall settings.

Did you do any computer software updates in between when it last connected and stopped connecting?

Limewire not connectin

I own Limewire 4 OS X. It will not connect. My internet works fine. I am on it. Limewire worked fine after they were shut down. After a few weeks it stopped connecting. What can I do?

Lord of the Rings January 15th, 2017 12:05 AM

Use the LW connection installer. I am working on an update but, the present one should still work fine. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html ie: use the LW 5 connection installer, as I have not updated the Mac LW 4 installer in a year but will within the next week or so.
The connection installers I put together should have at least some good hosts remaining on it up to (or possibly even over) 12 months. Though obviously the newer the date of the installer is the better it will be.

The Mac LW 5 connection installer will work on any MacOSX version.
The Mac LW 4 connection installer will work on any Mac using OS 7 through to OSX 10.6 only (It has been customized for older Mac OS and to include older Mac LW versions. A different host file is installed depending on option chosen.)
