New website design made usable

Hi,

I just made the new design of the website usable as static page.

I'd be glad if you could give it a try.

Hiya !

... uh... on 1024 X 768 horizontal scrolling is required !!!

arne_bab March 2nd, 2008 05:12 AM

Hi Ursula,

Thanks for your post!

Which browser do you use?

(For me 1024x768 works without horizontal scrolling - Konqueror and Firefox in GNU/Linux)

arne_bab March 6th, 2008 07:19 AM

What would you think about making this the new http://get.phex.org site, as soon as I sorted out the remaining problems?

ursula March 6th, 2008 07:31 AM

Why not ???

btw... Browser is Firefox for the moment.

Might be an idea for us to get together re: the final (Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha...) page so that we can discuss some very simple English usage subjects and general 'nomenclature'.
No heavy 'correction' stuff ! Just fine-tuning !

And... er, I continue to prefer the older page layout !!!

Cannot teach old dogs, hmmm ???

¡ luego !

ursula March 6th, 2008 08:29 AM

btw...

Tried using your published directions for adding the Phex download site address and Image...
No way it worked... ???

Finally went in to your account and then in to 'edit your signature' so that I could simply copy what you are using in your sig...

Worked first time !
I have not yet compared the two directions, sorry... must be something very simple...

Anyway, it's up and running in my sig now, so there...

and, this is the line I entered >

(URL="http://get.phex.org"](IMG]http://static.flickr.com/107/315073077_0643a4a6df_m.jpg[/IMG]

It is only necessary to alter the red and underlined ' ( ' to ' [ ' for the first URL command and the first IMG command.

arne_bab March 7th, 2008 12:22 AM

It's great to see Phex in your sig! I added your line to the get.phex.org thread, so people can find a now working version (I don't know either why it didn't work for you, but I though the best way to make sure we have a workign version is to copy your code to the thread :) ).

About which way of getting together did you think?

Besides: It is still an option to just scrap the design. I like it very much, but if most here have the feeling that it just doesn't fit Phex, I'll put it off.

ursula March 10th, 2008 04:01 AM

aaarrrggghhh !!!

The Phex has run away from my sig !!!

What's happening ?

ursula March 10th, 2008 04:04 AM

Ha Ha Ha Ha !!!!!

30 seconds after I did the above post the Phex came home to my sig !!!

Weird !

arne_bab March 10th, 2008 04:39 AM

Maybe flickr has gone slow...

arne_bab March 11th, 2008 01:57 AM

@ursula: Could you attach a screenshot how the website looks on your system?

Many thanks!

I now see one of the differences: The font looks far larger on your system than on mine. I'll make it slightly smaller (to be more like the wiki).

I need to do some tuning so it looks better on the different systems.

I attached how it looks for me (this is what I tried to archieve, now I have to make it work for other systems, too :wasntme: ).

arne_bab March 26th, 2008 01:45 PM

I just looked at the usage statistic, and it seems that people discovered phex-neu somehow:

Good hint, thanks!

arne_bab April 16th, 2008 08:21 AM

You can now follow the changes in the new website design online:

- phex_website summary - freeHg.org

arne_bab April 16th, 2008 08:26 AM

I switched the font size to medium, removing the fixed size definition - I hope this fixes the display issues in some browsers.

If the font is still too large, I can switch it to small (please write how it looks!).

arne_bab April 23rd, 2008 05:08 AM

after I tested it on the workstations in university, I could confirm that reducing the font size should drastically improve the looks of the website for many, while not degrading its looks too much for my setup.

With this, it should be almost ready for general consumption.

arne_bab December 12th, 2008 04:34 AM

I just saw the design in IE for the first time... ieeeh (7.0)!

I now understand why you said, it's not usable...

Notes to myself (so I don't forget them):

FIX1: css: body {font-size: 14px} // this makes the text well readable. - done

FIX2: Remove the pawline at the top though I really like it - IE just doesn't get it. - done

Related: Setup my ssh access at home again, so I can fix the site with _my_ tools and simultaneously check it from this MS box at university.

Damn1: Why doesn't that IE get it that the sidebar ends and the text should flow below it? It's able to draw the borders only to that point! - maybe I should play with z-index...

Damn2: Where's my "take back p2p" link...

arne_bab December 12th, 2008 09:47 AM

It is better, now?

Phex - take back p2p

Lord of the Rings December 12th, 2008 12:58 PM

I'm using safari so looks similar/same to me. Plainish but fine. :) No ... looks great! ;)

arne_bab December 12th, 2008 02:04 PM

Firefox and Konqueror display it fine, too, but IE hurts... and there are still about 60-70% IE users out there

Lord of the Rings December 12th, 2008 03:24 PM

Tell them all to use macs lol :p

arne_bab December 12th, 2008 04:27 PM

Or any GNU/Linux System ;) (I'm using a Gentoo)

I did a few more changes based on feedback from Gregor.

Could you have another look at the site?

It still looks icky when using IE (I use Firefox & the page looks fine).
The text is faded in places, there are 2 banners at the top of the page, the paw prints are looking strange.

arne_bab December 12th, 2008 11:08 PM

The faded text is intentional, but the double banners hurt... Many thanks!

Which version of IE do you use?

And can you click the links in the tab-line? (home, news, info, join)

birdy December 12th, 2008 11:32 PM

I can click on News, Info & Join but Home is dead for me.

I have IE 6.0.29 but I don't use IE normally - so if you'd like me to try a later version of IE then I can do that... doesn't matter to me which version is installed:p

arne_bab December 13th, 2008 04:41 AM

Home goes back to the start page - were you currently are. Does Home work when you're in info?

I'll tst IE 7.0 again next week - I hope I'll get it fixed.

Thanks for checking!

Lord of the Rings December 13th, 2008 12:08 PM

All looks fine on safari again. Looks good on FireFox 3.0.1 too.

eek Birdy that does look ugly. :D

The paw prints ... did you shrink them from originally? They do not appear as effective as I thought they used to. But if that's a sacrifice for IE then so be it. :)

Oops... sorry for the airhead comment:giggle:

Home works from Info.

Great!

So it is usable in IE 6, if not beautiful - that's a step on the road :)

Thanks for the info!

arne_bab December 19th, 2008 06:22 AM

Could you test the page again with IE 7 ?

I tested it in university today and had only minor glitches (I assume that they were due to the browsers treating padding differently).

I hope I just managed to fix these glitches (I don't have an IE here, so I had to fix based on the notes I took in university :) ).

The page looks way better in IE 7 than in 6 - no double banner. Links in the tab-line all work.
But the paw prints still look a bit strange to me (the way they jump to the left).
Attachment 4491

arne_bab December 26th, 2008 02:14 AM

note to myself: no inner padding for tab bar icon(not useful) and try the paws as backgound of content_content. (I'll be back on sunday)

arne_bab December 28th, 2008 05:18 PM

I hope I just managed to fix the jumping pawline and the disappearing tab bar text bug.

Can you verify the fix?

- Phex - take back p2p

Technical: the paws are now the background of #pane_content and the tab bar icons no longer have inner padding (which was useless anyway since the text is centered).
tested in Konqueror and Firefox, but it should fix IE 7.

Paw prints look much better - now they look the same in IE7 as in Firefox.

Top of page

And further down the page

arne_bab December 29th, 2008 02:17 AM

Great!

Now only one last thing remains: The tab line still has that strange yellow line below it, while the white tab shouldn't be seperated and the darker tabs should be seperated by a normal tab border...

I tried to fix that, but somehow IE 7 didn't use the changes.

Still the website is now in a state that I really like it, in Firefox as well as in Konqueror, and as soon as IE 7 can render it correctly, too, I'll be very happy with it.

That's almost 18 months of work culminating in this version, and it feels good to have it almost finished.

arne_bab January 9th, 2009 03:55 AM

It now works in IE 7.0 in university!

(can you verify that?)

- Phex - take back p2p

So it is now completely operational and could instantly be dropped in as replacement for the forwarding page at Phex - Home

One of its main advantages over any other p2p website I know is that it loads really fast (that was one of my design goals, so I'm quite happy with how it worked out - it's what you get by going the plain file way with a design which doesn't need images for the layout: one single http request per site and all content is displayed in a useful way ; note: subsequent pages use a style sheet, the first page includes).

birdy January 10th, 2009 01:34 AM

Yep it looks ok for me in IE 7.

All the tabs, menu options, links, search etc are working & there's nothing that looks out of place or weird:)

arne_bab January 10th, 2009 02:11 AM

Yay!

Remoc January 11th, 2009 08:07 AM

Nice work Arne. :xirokrotima:
