damn near every download says "could not move to library" I am having problems downloading mp3s with limewire on a mac. I've never used limewire before (and don't know much about macs either). All I know is that 3/4's of the files I download have the message "could not move to library" instead of "complete". I then cannot find them. Did they download somewhere to my computer and just couldn't be moved to my library or are they gone completely. I have looked all over the limewire support pages and cannot find any mention of this problem. I do not know what I am doing wrong. Please help! |
well I've now read the faq, and found the problem. But the files are not in my incomplete folder. They finished 100% and don't know where they are now. Could they have gone somewhere other than the incomplete folder? |
I'm having the same problem, on Mac OS X and Windows. What gives? This isn't in any documentation that I can find. Is there an "Error Messages Explained" document anywhere? |
I am having the same problem. The downloads appear to be 100% complete but the message "unable to move to library" appears. Is there someone out there that can help? |
Problems I too have the same problem... I download things completely but, instead of saying "unable to post in library," it just doesn't show up and I can't find the file anywhere on my computer. I have Windows XP, do you think that it's something that has to do with that?! Can anyone help me???? |
unable to move to library message There is a "preference" or "setting" that allows you to select the destination of the downloaded files. I changed mine back to the default and it seemed to work......although I started getting the message back again a few days later....still scratching my head on this one. |
check your incomplete folder. |
What will I find in my incomplete folder? |

Can you give me a hint how to find them??? Thank-you |

For example, let's say your save folder (where the files should be), is located in c:\download\save. You incomplete directory is c:\download\incomplete (one level under the save folder), example 2: complete: e:\files\completefiles\ incomplete: e:\files\incomplete Now, go to the incomplete folder. You should see there some files. One of them is download.dat, that saves the status of your downloads (DON'T DELETE IT), and all the other are the files you've been trying to download. Now, lets say that the file you were trying to download is: file1.txt, and it's size is 40000 bytes. In the incomplete folder, you should see it in this form: T-40000-file1.txt Now copy that file anywhere you want. That's it. |
Many thanks my friend....I'll try it!! Mark |
No wonder I can't resume incompletes!...I have been deleting the .dat file!...OK. So you are saying that I can copy the incompleted file and move it. But can I resume the download? What's the use of moving an incompleted file?  |
Unfortunatly, you can't resume an incomplete file once "Download.dat" is gone. You will have to start from scratch. There is no use of moving an incomplete file. I wrote how to do it to someone who downloaded them completely, but LimeWire didn't move it to the "complete" directory. |
that doesn't work for me Quote:

I have that prob. too... I have no shared folder at all! I am about to get pissed. |
Hey everyone!! The reason I am writing today is because I have been experiencing the same problems as the rest of you. My problem is EXACTLY like Suomi's problem-- my files completely disappear! I have looked everywhere for them. They are not in my "Incomplete" folder... and I don't even have a "Complete" folder in my library. I just got this LimeWire software last night... I am really new at this. So I thought maybe I was doing something wrong. But then I came here, and I saw how many people are having the same problem as me. Is there anyone out there who knows how to correct this problem? I was really excited to get this software.... and now I'm a little disappointed that it's not working. I used to have napster and I thought this was like it, but so far it's not working out so great. If anyone can possibly help with this problem, please reply to my post! I have searched all the FAQ's and help things and haven't found any info on this problem. My downloads just simply disappear. I downloaded two last night-- and they completely finished. It said they were "Complete" and 100% done. But then when I turn to my library... there is nothing there. No files anywhere. They aren't even on my computer's hard drive...... I searched the whole thing. Also, it doesn't give me the error message about it not being able to tranfer the file to the library. I read that some people were getting that message. But mine just doesn't appear there at all! I am wondering if maybe it is saving them in another place that I don't know about. Does anyone know about this? If so, could you please tell me where? I am not sure where they could be. I KNOW they are downloaded though, because they were complete and I heard a piece of the song. If anyone can help with this problem, it would be wonderful! If anyone has a solution or suggestion, I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time and for reading this. And good luck to everyone with their problems!! ~Angel |

I have the exact same promblem. And I have ME so i don't think that is it. Help |
I have gotten the answer everybody! it took me a while but i figured it out. if you are using win. go to the c drive go to search and type in lime wire. then go to a folder click on it then you are able to see incomplete or shared click on shared and there are your songs. It took me a while though so don't feel bad |
I think one of the important points you seem to be missing is that you have to set up a "share" file. By default, LW 2.4.2 does it as "C\ProgramFiles\Limewire\Shared". ...,,,Check in Limewires "Tools->Options-> Sharing". That should tell you where the shared file is. You can also set one up there if you don't have one. And then just go to THAT folder when you want to see your completed files. |
IT WORKS!!! YOU GUYS ARE GENIUSES!!!! I tried what you guys were saying-- and it actually worked! My completed songs are there, and they actually work when I play them. Thanks a lot guys! It seems kind of like a "duh" but I would have never figured that out on my own. Thank you very much for your help!!! :) :) ~Angel PS: Does this mean I have to go to this folder whenever I want to hear my completed songs? (and NOT LimeWire itself?) THANKS AGAIN! =) |
yes |
All of them go there????? Hey again. Wait a sec....... one last thing! so how come all the songs that are completed do not go to the "Shared" folder? I wrote on this board earlier...... and that method you guys posted worked for me and I found my songs. But I downloaded a new song yesterday. And then I went into the "Shared" folder to look for it and play it, but it wasn't there. :( Is there a specific reason why some of the songs are going into that folder and others aren't? Right now I am trying to re-download it because I thought maybe I did something wrong. Does anyone know why that happens? Ok, thanks again everyone for all the help!! ~Angel |
There is a so called "could not move to library" error that might have occurred if your disk is full or the file name contained illegal characters like a "/". I'd try searching for the file with the explorer if you still know the name. |
Hi Angel. If you have everything set up correctly, your tunes SHOULD go to your "shared" folder. Although things don't always work as they should. You might want to redownload the song and try again. Or if that doesn't work, redownload LimeWire. Which version are you using? I had a lot of problems with older versions, but have no problems with version 2.4.2. .....Joe |
PS. I find it easier to just go to the folder itself to play your songs rather than LimeWire. This way you see them all layed out and you have more control as to the player you want to use. I prefer Winamp. |
Thanks Joe Hi Joe! Thanks for responding to my messages. I think the version of LimeWire that I am using is 2.4.4. I tried re-downloading the song again, but again it didn't show up in my "Shared" foler. So I decided to give up, lol. I thought I was doing something wrong, but the other songs I download don't go there. I only have two (the first two I ever downloaded) in that folder. That's okay, don't worry about it. Thank you very much for your help. And I find it much easier just to go to that folder to listen to those two songs. For some reason the other songs I download don't show up there. They disappear like before. Oh well. Thanks again for your reply and help. I appreciate it. ~Angel |
They SHOULD go to your shared folder. Try reinstallining LimeWire. After all, it's supposed to work! |
Anyone have any other ideas about Angel's problem? |
Could not move to library I just read in the LimeWire FAQ a couple of days ago that if a file name has invalid characters in it (like a "backslash") the system cannot move it to your computer. It's kinda like an trying to save a file with a colon or backslash as part of the name. About all you can do is try to find the file named differently so you can download it. The files with the T-920357203 are most likely files from someone's incomplete folder. From what I've seen, the system adds a number to the file if you access it before it's completely downloaded. |
Angel... You might want to make sure you didn't create a folder within a folder for your shared files. I know this sounds stupid but I thought I had lost a lot of stuff, too. Turns out that my kids made their own folder within my shared folder. When I looked in the SHARED folder on my hard drive, I saw nothing...Then I found out that everything I had been downloading had gone to their folder which was inside my shared folder. Not sure if that helps...just something that happened to me when I thought I was losing stuff...And not trying to insult your intelligence if you already thought of that... |
That explains a lot. I couldn't understand why the file would be in my incomplete file (it's not) when the "cannot move file to library" error comes up instantly as soon as I start downloading the file. My connection is fast, but not that fast :) |
I fianlly found this in the user's guide again. I am 99.99% sure that I found that the "Could Not Move To Library" message was also associated with invalid file names. I'm still looking. (Below is a link to the page in the user guide that contains this info and I also pasted the para. with the info on the "Could Not Move To Library" message.) http://www.limewire.com/index.jsp/userguide/search Couldn't Move to Library: Means your downloaded file couldn't be moved to the Library for some reason. It's possible there was already a file in the library with that name that couldn't be overwritten for some reason, or maybe the save directory in the library had been moved or had otherwise become inaccessible. |

I have found the files that get this "Message" have illegal characters in the name. I don't have a MAC so I can't say if a "/" is a legal file character or not. Sometimes I have seen a "?" in the file name. |
