how many files can you get at once?

I just downloaded limewire today and i have been trying to figure it out. I can only seem to download 2 files at once and the rest sit there at 0 and don't attempt to download even after the first 2 have finished.
Also, is there a way besides the stars to know whether it will be a good download? What is that bitrate thing?

theoretically ~ 1000, practically I wouldn't download more than 8 at once.
