freezing during download

I recently trird to download a rather large file and halfway through the process my screen froze. I had to force shutdown of my computer. What happened to my partial download? can I get it back and how?

It is my understanding that recovery of a partial download can only happen if the program is exited in a normal manner... and even at that I don't think it is a 100% process. Obviously when you leave the application in a situation such as yours chances are slim to none.
