"can't move to library"? Why do i get the message "can't move to library" when i try to download an mpg file? what does that mean? |
I have the same problem. Win98, latest version, a variety of songs. What could it be? |
I get that message. I think I get itt when I try to download a file with a slash in the name. |
This problem has been discussed quite a bit in prior threads... it's been traced to file names that contain these characters: \ / : * ? " | < > These are "illegal characters" in Windows. LimeWire won't download these files on any platform. If the files you are trying to download contain any of these characters you'll get the 'cannot move to library error'. This seems to be the most common reason for the error. There are others which you can find if you do a search through the forum. |
Special Characters Many OSes reject special characters in filenames. In Mac, if you try to put special characters in filenames it will either warn you or change the special character to "-". Perhaps Limewire programmers should evaluate the filename before Limewire attempts to download the file and automatically replace the special characters with "-" ... |

Same old story Been offline since August and see that little has changed with this 'cannot move to library' problem. I still think the problem lies elsewhere than simply with illegal characters or too lengthy filenames. I've just started up version 2.3.4 and it's working OK; much later versions don't. btw, I've moved to Rome and would appreciate recommended ISPs here. |
Why not add these illegal characters to the filters? Then you wouldn't encounter this problem. Some file names are so long that you can't see these illegal characters unless you have a very wide screen. |
problem without special characters I gust tried to download a file with the name of Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6.0 with keymaker.zip this filename had none of the special characters listed previously. When I went to the incomplete directory and double clicked on the file and tried to launch it WinZIP complained that the archive was corrupt. So, is the archive corrupt because Limewire could not move it, or is the reason the Limewire could not move it because it was corrupt? Thanks, Jesse Tutterrow |
That is a question for the programmers. I would assume that LimeWire couldn't move it b/c the file is corrupt. It seems that one of the latest inhancements to the program is file verification.. After adding all the illegal characters to my filter exceptions I am still encountering files that cannot be moved to the library. I don't believe that illegal characters are the problem after all. I'm thinking it probably has to do with LimeWire's file verification routines. Back to square one. I'm going to try to use an earlier version of LimeWire to see if this is true. |
"Could not move to library" error Over 50% of the files that reach 100% vanish from my hard drive with the "Could not move to library" error. I have elimated all but one of the theoretical causes that I have found in this forum. I have received this error in versions 2.6.3, 2.7.3, 2.7.13, 2.8.2 and 2.8.5. 1. None of the files appear to have any Windows "illegal characters". 2. Limewire only reported corruption in one of 10+ files. 3. I have over 20 megs. of hard drive space available. 4. I am only sharing 7 files. 5. I am not using a Firewire drive. I sugest that lewinb's theory be researched because: 1. Most of the files that have died are larger than 50 meg. 2. I only have 128 megs of ram, but Windows Task Manager reports that I am using 175-200+ megs of memory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original text by lewinb: Does Limewire do something really assinine and wierd, like trying to fill up its available memory with data (ie, save the file "to memory" and then write to disk when that is full?... Presumably to minimize the need for constant disk access? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Also, can Limewire be changed so that it does not delete the file from the "Incomplete" folder if it receives the "Could not move to library" error? |
Cannot Move to Library I have tried everything listed in this thread. Nothing helps. This problem seems to have gotten much worse as LimeWire was upgraded. I am using 2.8.5 Pro and it just gets worse and worse. The majority of what I download "cannot be moved to library". Some of the files which are MPG (etc) I can preveiw during the download though. I find it hard to believe it is a problem with a file name. Help someone Please. |
Just plain doesn't work I have been trying the newer versions of Limewire and keep getting "cannot move to library" messages on most of the files I download.I also noticed that if I don't download files immediately, they never download. I left limewire run for ten days, and none of the programs on my list of about fifty downloaded. I feel suckered into paying money for a program that does not work anymore. I have windows xp with 160 gig of hard drive space, yet can't get any more files, what's up? |
[COLOR=royalblue] have read all FAQ + manual & see nothing re this 'can not move to library' problem, hence i now find myself here for the first time & see that i am not alone. I had no problems downloading 2 large files of about 330-480 mb's ... was doing it slowly but surely via modem till it hit about 160-276 mb's & now it refuses to download those or any of the many other associated files as recv the above msg. They do have a hyphen in the file name, but it was downloading fine before. Will try to dig up an old limewire version to see if it will kick in ( & use current partially downloaded files) ... plse advise if anyone else has noticed a difference in reverting to older versions Have also noticed another problem just recently ... when resuming downloads, i check the library & select 'refresh' to view the latest download size ... but now it seems that the file size is NOT increasing even though the Search screen indicates it is ... could these 2 problems be related ? .... is it a conspiracy ? ... or should i just stop drinking ? cheers the fox (green) |

After downloading these files and you know there on the Hard drive. Close the program down when your done and manually move them there to the shared Directory and restart the program. It seems to me there is a bug in the code which may need to be fixed with next version. |
Solution! ... or just a hyperactive optimist? [I] Well ... i thought i would check the size of my 'incompletes' folder on my hardrive & it was a coincidently a rounded number of 1.02 Gb ... so i took a few bits of files out from there (drop 'n' dragged to other folder on desktop) to take it down to about 900 mb ... & surprise! surprise! ... i am downloading those files i previously mentioned & it is refreshing in the library beautifully so is it simply the fact that the 'incomplete' folder has a maximum capacity of 1Gb ?? !! plse advise if anyone else can concur on same symptom & fix cheers & good luck ! Six of the last nine files I've downloaded have been lost to the "Could not move to library problem". I have never seen this problem with any FTP or P2P client app until I started using LimeWire. Please fix this in 2.8.6 or I'll have to go back to Xolox (which isn't nearly as much fun to use as LimeWire, but at least it manages to save the files it has downloaded). |
Well just checked the size of my incomplete folder and it is 570 meg. Still get files that "can't be moved to Library". One thought has occurred though. Llimewire normally sets up the incomplete folder as a "shared" folder for the purpose of sharing files. I am wondering if the problem lies with people inadvertently sharing incomplete files and Limewire then chokes on them. Just an idea |

My last four "can't be moved to library" failures didn't have any illegal characters in the file names. One file in particular that failed under LimeWire successfully downloaded under Xolox (I have no idea if the file can from the same host). If the LimeWire team can reproduce this error then they can fix it. |
I would be amazed if they have not gotten this message. For me Lime wire has gone from extremely cool to totally useless in just two upgrades. In addition to the “cannot move” errors I have also been getting java errors. Limewire freezes and a box comes up telling me that an error occurred, I used to be able to run this program 24Hrs. with no problem. During that time I would usually have over a hundred uploads and downloads. Anyone else have the same problem? Bring back 2.6. Ps. Some things I tried - Deleting the content of the incomplete folder. - Reinstalling Sun's Java. - Reinstalling lime wire. - Changing drives and directory for downloads. |
I occassionally get the Java error windows too. The Limewire error messages seems rather terse and useless; the "please cut and paste and email this error message to us" is ridiculous. The error messages thrown by Xolox are really informative (to a programmer, anyway) and they are automatically sent to the Xolox support team's web site. It's a really cool setup. Now is Xolox would also support live, automatic updates. But I agree with your assessment--Limewire's stability seems to have degraded over the past few releases. |
This is rediculous. This forum is based on a shoddy self help system. Endless posts about what people think is the reason for a problem and bad suggestions on how to fix it. Not one good answer from the developer. Ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away, and I'm tired of reading back and forth posts which amount to nothing more than a "No, YOUR stupid!" argument. It is undoubtable that limewire 2.8.5 is rediculously flawed. It is undoubtable that much more than a fraction of an improvement to the download errors can be obtained by the users. Limewire needs to do something about this. I would never register a program this bad. I used limwire 2.7 and considered supporting p2p sharing (registering), but it has become apparent that I might as well just throw my money in the gutter. I would never pay for a program with a degrading future. It's barely useable now. Someone from the inside should explain this "could not move to library" issue. It's a lot better than a hundred people randomly guessing at what's wrong! Throw us a bone man! |
"Could not move to library" Guys, guys, guys !!!! If you continue to ignore the "Could not move to library" problem, it is going to kill this product !!!!!!!!! I have spent considerable time experimenting with different solutions and nothing *fixes* it. I have tried every version from 2.6.3 to 2.8.6 and they all do it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it numerous times. I have lost at least 50 downloads. There are numerous complaints in this forum and I have only seen a few explanations. None of these explanations hold water. Explanation # 1. The file has special characters. Response: I did not see any special characters in any of the 50+ downloads that failed. Are the special characters hidden? Work-around #1. Kill the download before it finishes and restart it. Response: If the problem is special characters, then why does killing the download and restarting it work??? It should fail either way, right? Don't take my word for it. Search through this forum and read all of the different comments where people HAVE had success with this work-around. Explanation # 2. The file was corrupted. Response: Limewire only reported corruption in 1 of the 50+ files. Explanation # 3. Hard drive is full. Response: I have over 50 megs. available on my hard drive. Explanation # 4. The problem is caused by a Firewire drive. Response: I do not have a Firewire drive. Explanation # 5. Insufficient system memory. Response: I upgraded from 128 megs to 256 megs of ram and still get this error. Work around #2. Go to the Incomplete folder and move the file manually. Response: I have not been able to find any of the 50+ downloads that failed with this error. It appears that Limewire deletes the file from the Incomplete folder BEFORE it determines that it can't save it to the Shared folder. Don't take my word for it. Search through this forum and read all of the different comments where people have NOT had success with this work-around. At this point, I have completely given up on Limewire. I have not had a successful download in 2 weeks!!! I really like the product and I am not trying to slam it. I just want some one to take the problem seriously and fix it. Thanks! Lee |
Well, I tried to download a 500MB plus download from limewire. I found that when the file said, "could not move to library", that I would kill the download and restart the download, and it would pick up where it started. Sometimes it would pop the message back up immediatly, and sometimes it wouldn't. It seems to depend on who it's downloading it from. I'm using a quicksilver g4 Mac and 2.7.3. I suggest when you get that error, search for the file. When you find the file with THE EXACT SIZE AND NAME, kill the failed download and download the new file. It should pick up from the download from where it left off. If it fails immediatly again, find the file again, kill the failed download, and start the download on the new file again. But quit the program immediatly before it connects. This will keep the program in the data. Then try again later. This is only a suggestion. And I'm not sure if it will work on other platforms. The key elements is that the name and the size remain the same. Otherwise it will restart the download. I also set the pref's so that it will keep incomplete downloads for 60 days. Another note: When I finished the file, the file was renamed to something along the lines of "party.mpg", which was much different from the .dmg file that I intended to download. Renaming the file, I found that the data was OK. Maybe the problem is that the file matching feature of limewire confuses the file for another of similar size, and then errors when the data doesn't match. That's just a guess. See my above gripe if you like to listen to angry rants. |
Adieus!!!!!!!!!! I recently installed DEADwire (based on a friends recommendation) and have tried to download several files. If the download is completed (a big if) IN EVERY CASE I receive the message "cannot move to library" in all other cases I receive the message "requery sent waiting". I HAVE YET TO DOWNLOAD ONE FILE SUCCESSFULLY! When viewing the forums such as this one I note that this is not only a common problem but is getting worse! Obviously the powers to be at DEADwire are incapable of solving the problem or worse do not care! In either case when enough members leave, maybe they will then have enough spare time on their hands to rectify the problem. I can assure you that I will do my best to keep new members from joining. I have better things to do with my time then baby sit this program! Adieus!!!!!! |
2.8.6 PRO doesn't work either, and their supposed "support" is total crap. Emails to Limewire get the same response that the file's too big, it has strange characters, or you don't have enough disk space. All this is crap. I used the free version of 2.6.2 and had no problems with it, but then I started getting messages that it would stop working soon unless I upgraded. So I bought the Pro version of 2.8.6 and now it totally blows. I never had a problem like this with any other gnutella program. And the worst part is that limewire couldn't seem to care less. I guess it's back to Xolox. Screw limewire. |
