Hi Jack--glad to hear the news. I just tried checking a thread about a troubles with broadband reported on the .Mac boards a few months ago (some UK subscribers couldn't access their iDisks because of an ISP set-up/filter or some such problem). The thread has been removed/archived and is now inacessible.

Just some thoughts--might be worth checking your ISP's policy on filters, esp in regards to gnutella. Perhaps "displaced" might offer a heads-up or would know of a site you could get some references before you commit.

Too, the cablemodem specs can be tricky to understand. eg--my ISP provides a 10 megabit/sec modem, but it's capped at 1 megabit/sec total up and down max. That sounds good, but it also depends how many cable users are on the node I'm on. This means if everyone is watching some major news story, my broadband can get pretty narrow pretty quickly. Bottom line? Conditons vary so much that trading files with my neighbour means we see anywhere fom 20 KB/sec to 150 KB/sec. Go figure.

Well, back to work, and back to hoping for your success.

Hi Stief,
I phoned the cable company to enquire if they put a block on file sharing and they said that they don't. So I think that everything should be O.K. I'll just have to wait and see.

All the best
Jack.

I'll look forward to hearing the results of your broadband try. . . get. Should be useful for others too.
Cheers

An update on the broadband issue

Hi Stief,

I've been trying it out for a few days now and it's going well. So far the best i've had is 52kb/s downloading from a 4 star green T1

 And for a 4 star green cable around 25-30kb/s. At one point I was downloading from 5 hosts on the same download. So a big improvement from the dreaded modem.

All the best
Jack.

Neat. You can try a general search for something new, and the IP that shows up first is usually the closest and fastest. If you browse that host, you can sometimes find a file to see what speeds you can get locally.

What client are you trying today?

Hi Stief,
The speeds above were obtained using Limewire.
