Default QuickTime Mp3 vs "Document"...

Real new to LimeWire. Some files are saved as "documents" rather than QuickTime Mp3 files (the latter of which I can play). Do I have to convert the "documents" to another format? Or do I have to search for a "playable file"?
Thanks for any help in advance -viz
