"Could not Connect, Awaiting Sources" - Always?! I've been trying for a week now to download files and though a few came through at first, for the past several days, no matter what file I pick, it just says "Connecting" and then "Could not Connect, Awaiting Sources" and lines up with all the rest that said the same thing. I've read through the FAQ and one post that explained how to better assure a successful download. I changed everything accordingly - especially only looking for 3-4 stars. And yet, I'm not getting anything! People are uploading from my files just fine! So why can't I download any files! Thanks so much for any help with this! |
|
So sorry about that - I'm used to forums that automatically include my info and just forgot! Okay - I'm running under Mac OS 10.2.5, Limewire 2.9.8. |
Ouch! Thanks for including the info; but I'm convinced there are some major problems with OSX 10.2.5 and the LW 2.9.8 that will not be fixed shortly. The OSX version of LW is still using java 1.3.1. For the next few weeks, try Acquisition : it's basically LW at the core, but the developer has adapted it to work on OSX with java 1.4.1, so let him worry about getting LW to work on OSX while the LW team gets the next release ready. You could try running the uninstall AND trashing the ~/Library/Preferences/LimeWire folder, ~/Library/Preferences/LimeWire.plist, and the Incomplete folder (salvage what you can for curiousity, but very few are likely to resume). Some other OSX ~/Library setting gets corrupted too, but I can't find it. There are other possibilities, but you've already read the threads, so if you find something new . . . do post back. Cheers. [edit--you DID know about cmd-clicking the search tabs to "repeat search", right? Kick me if that's all you need!] |
Mac OSX 10.2.5, LW 2.9.8 Pro DSL Verizon and Airport wireless Mac Powerbook Titanium G4 400Mhz Same prob here that has gotten worse and worse. I used to get one dwnld before the "waiting for sources" no go. Now it's on everything. Might be the installation? As in resources or plist in user/Library or System/Library? whadooaino? I relied Acquisition but find too many hosts offline. I have yet to get a single complete dwnld from Acq. Everyone gets nixed by the host offline or busy or waiting in line. I wish my Limewire worked as it did for so long. Now I'm payin Apple .99c per song. And they only have a handful of songs on iTunes Store. *sigh* Limewire and Gnutella are (were?) the best... |
Same error msg but using OS X I am a brand new user running Limewire 2.9.8 that I installed today on G4 with OS 9.2.2. I am seeing the exact msg and unable to download ANYTHING at all: Could not Download; awaiting sources. I dumped my .limewire folder to rebuild the prefs. that did not help. I am seriously wondering after reading some of these postings if this will work... I have Earthlink DSL, and a Linksys wireless router as well.... Any ideas????? |
Re: "Could not Connect, Awaiting Sources" - Always?! Similar problem w/me. Made changes in tools/options for better connections also. Am seeing lots of connections, and a few uploads; but no downloads, tho. Using Win2000, connect via Comcast cable. If you learn more, pls forward info to me c/o herbwx@comcast.net --------------------------- Quote:

Re: Same error msg but using OS X I would like to stick w/Limewire, but can't seem to download anything since upgrading to v2.9.8 two days ago. To ensure I hadn't erred at my end, I downloaded a similar program, Shareaza, and it works fine right from the get-go. At least I can use it and download stuff while I solve the Limewire issues. Answer? Im having the same problem, has anyone got an answer to this delema? |
Awaiting Sources To all, The same has happened to me. Revert back to Limewire v2.7. This version seems less buggy. Armadillo |
new Limewire version same prob Hello all, Dunno if there is finally a fix for the "could not downlaod, awaiting sources" but I just paid mo munnie for version 2.9.10 thinking it would fix the prob. But noooooo. Still can't get more than one song. Has anyone solved this? I am now running OSX 10.2.6. So the prob can't be the older versions of Mac OS and Limewire. what are we techno flunkies to do? Acquisition is not an option. Never gotten one single tune from it. I am so sad. iTunes does not have most of my requests. Limewire does! *sigh* |
Wow, Guys This really is a thread of doom and gloom, isn't it? I'm currently running LW2.9.10 on OS10.2.6 and have noticed an improvement in performance. Although I'm still averaging about a 5% success rate in actually making a connection with a willing host, I'm currently getting more than 50% of those connections to a complete download. I think that's wonderful! Just think — a 2.5% success rate overall! And yet you seem to be worried because you are hitting a few "Cannot download" messages? Surely you didn't expect Gnutella to give up her treasures without you paying some form of price, did you? Common, Guys, attempt to download from hundreds of sources per session. Most will not download but some will. Adopt a flexible search strategy, experiment with Limewire's resources, learn from your experiences and soon you will have a library of copyright free material to be proud of. |

David91: Cannot tell how much of your reply is/isn't sarcasm. But plain & simple, for me-- Limewire upgraded doesn't download at all. Shareaza is excellent -- for me! Cheers.... |
Hi Herbwx If you check back through all my posts, you will find the statistics of my experience using Limewire are well documented. I can assure you that no sarcasm was nor is intended. As an old guy, I simply cannot relate to the apparent need for instant-gratification that most people under forty years seem to have these days. I graft for my downloads and, by my standards, have been pretty successfull. If you feel that you are going to get easier pickings elsewhere, good luck to you. For those that remain, I offer no more than the simple encouragement that, through hard work, you will prevail. |
Re: Hi Herbwx Well, not only am I not under 40.... I'm not under 50 !! But when one upgrades a program to the "newer" (read: improved?) version and it simply won't work, what is one to do ? It's not a matter of instant gratification. Zero downloads over the course of a week is no-gratification. My setup had to have been correct as I made no changes except for the upgrade. And as soon as I downloaded a different program, the new program worked -- and continues to work -- flawlessly. I wish I could've stuck with LW; but sometimes a new experience is better in the long-run. This is just one person's story; your mileage may differ. -Herb Quote:

Hi Herb Before we disappear too far off-topic, I offer this slim justification for my comment about under forties: http://media.guardian.co.uk/newmedia...957033,00.html which publishes the latest research showing that only 24% of p2p users are over 45 years. I regret that our experience in using LW does not coincide. I have struggled with it but prevail. I wish you well elsewhere. David |
I don't get yr point... You seem to miss the point david91. Some of us have been using Limewire for many months with no problem like the one we are in now. And I have "paid" for LW. First I paid $10 and now I paid $7.50 which is a good deal. My iTunes library is full of shared music I got from LW. But it doesn't make me "proud". It's what I havta do to get music in a market that is controlled by monopolies and huge markups (which have already been etablished as illegal in US courts). Apple's solution 0f .99 a song is a good deal but the selection is still slim and yes, the music industry is fuming again because iTunes 4 can allow for peer to peer downloads. So methinks you are way off base. This problem "awaiting resources" is new and different and still hasn't been explained by those in the know (I guess that would be you). Is the "awaiting resources" an app problem (installation, permissions, directories, resources?) or is is it strictly a download prob from the host? What resources are waited? BTW: s'cuse the ignorant (in my case) over 40 instant gratification brat 'tude, but how do you download the same tune from 100 hosts? And why do you feel so smug in bragging about some skill you have? oi vei. |
Ah, good, a debate! For the record, I have been using Limewire for just over three months. I have observed the download failure message change its wording and read the threads where this change was discussed. As I understand it, the purpose of the change was to signal that Limewire will no longer requery automatically, but the substance of the message remained unchanged, namely, that the source you have tried will not download anything or any more to you unless you do something about it. So unless I have fundamentally misunderstood the situation (which is not as uncommon as I like to think) what you complain of is not a new problem. In 2001/2, the published research shows that only about one third of disclosed Gnutella connections were real and, of those, most failed within 27 seconds. For a variety of reasons, the situation has worsened. To achieve success (and, yes, I do admit to feeling quite pleased that I have prevailed in these adverse conditions) you have to be very active. I search and hit all the disclosed hosts for the track I want. Those that come up "awaiting sources" I restart the download because the initial rejection may have been due to a queueing problem at a busy host. If that fails, I immediately move on to the next host. My record for simultaneous downloads of a single track is eight. During any one session, I will make hundreds of download requests for different tracks, hundreds of kill download and restart download key strokes, repeating the searches to refresh stalled downloads on a routine basis (the autocomplete facility is very useful for this but always amend to match the typography of a host that has started to download to you), host browsing to add an additional string to the download request strategy, etc, etc. In other words, it is like playing a computer game with non-stop activity, always ready to kill and restart the current downloads from the original points in the carefully managed search boxes the moment any one connection is lost. To maximise success in adverse conditions requires effort. I commend you for paying for Limewire. All shareware projects of quality should be supported one way or another. As to the entrenched interests of larger corporations and their understandable desire to protect their profits, extending the conversation would take us too far off-topic. |
Me. too! Updated 2 days ago to OS 10.2.6, and am getting the same message you all are. Been using LW since AudioGalaxy's demise. I recently turned 60, so I'm not quite in the gotta have it now group, but it seems to me that all the work described by David91 is more than I'm interested in. I thought that the program is supposed to do the work. No? The best was Audio Galaxy. Why can't LW do what they did? (I'm no geek, so I don't know why some apps. work better than others.) At any rate, being unable to download does not encourage me to pay up. Any solutions out there? I also use iSwipe, which is faster than LW, especially now! TIA for any suggestions. MRH: |
What LW no longer does David91 you are quite right that there is a change. And that's what all the kvetching is about. You hit it on the head when you say it's like playing a computer game with a very busy whacking at the keyboard. I didn't sign up to play a computer game, I just want LW to work as fabulously as it once did with a less than 50% failure rate. The change is for most of us a huge obstacle to using the LW app. That doesn't make me regret having put $17.50 into the hands of people who write GNU software for the love of it. If I had a million I would send them half. I went to my LW Help menu to the Review Limewire command which launched my browser and took me to <http://download.com.com/3302-2179_4-10195993.html> The majority of LW users are now giving it a nasty thumbs down. 73% !!! Time to rethink your posture. As for debates. I will look for other fora to have the kinda debate I like to have. This is not one of em. Indeed I don't think corporate super-profits are sacred or beyond debate or even legal action. In fact, I thought that's why P2P networks came into being at all. The history of GNU and open source is not found in Microsoft or Disney. It is found among those software writers and computer users who have tried from the get go to keep computing in the hands of the public. Most of them hate the corporations that stole the desktop computer from its humble origins and turned into a Wall Street casino that was part of the wreckage of many people's life savings not long ago, remember? I live in California. We know all about corporate super-profits in energy and healthcare and entertainment. We got fleeced for billions by unregulated ENRON. The latter used your argument to say it was OK. Last week the NY Times published an article showing that Vivendi Universal is hiring hackers to bring down P2P networks and to write worms that will erase the harddrives of that contain pirated music. The post fake songs on servers that are actually viruses. That IS illegal! Yesterday Vivendi sued Bertelsman over Napster. No love among them either. And they are threatening Apple over iTunes4. But you wanna give me lessons in economics? I have a PhD in econonics! I recall these cannibals opposed the audio cassette, Betamax, CD ROM, minidisc, Apple iDVD and every technology they feel is a "threat" to their profits. They indeed effectively killed minidisc in the USA. They also deprive the artists the "own" from their rightful share of the intellectual property they are so keen to "protect." The legal caseload on this subject can fill many rooms. But let's not go there. Y'all in Singapore, global shrine to unfeterred capitalism, think all is fair in money and profit. That little prosperous fester of unbridled materialism is also openly authoritarian and has produced the most compliant and self-censored people in the world. Maybe tomorrow the followers of Lee Kwan Yu will dictate death penalty for music pirates. ;-) Time to rethink your posture. |
Thank you In all the off-topic posting, you carefully avoided saying the one thing that would have been a meaningful contribution to the debate. You did not deny that the methodology I was describing is a means of compensation for Limewire's poor performance. And, for the benefit of all who may have the patience to read to this point, that is the only thing that matters. |
*sigh* bye for now... I wuzzint careful at all. You are asking people to get the engine started by lifting the hood, tweaking the sparkplugs, venting the carburator and turning the crank by hand. If it starts, jump in the driver's seat and drive. cute. but way complex. I tried it, it didn't work. My version of LW only has Resume. So I tried to Resume and tried and tried and tried. Knoock yrself out. off topic is better than off century ;-) |
Resume? Oh, dear! Reading skills are lacking. If you had taken the trouble to look through the threads on this forum, you would discover that Resume was disabled last year. That was why I so carefully neglected to mention it in my description of what to do. But if you want to continue this demonstration of why you're never going to make a success of a project requiring intelligence, just carry on as you are. |
go for it! I just downloaded 2.9.11 and it still duzzint download successfully. have fun playing computer games with music downloads. LW will probably die from technical glitches if denial rules in GNUtella land. Funny if Resume is discontinued why do they keep the command in three versions of 2.9? carefully or not. geeking for music is like growing wheat to eat bread or keeping cows to have a glass of milk. go for it! |
I know it is a redundant question, given your high-powered PhD, but you did remember to trash all the "Limew" labelled files before installing the new version, didn't you? We both know that a tabla rasa gives the best results, right? |
download problems I just installed the upgrade to LW vers 2.9.11. I'm finally back in business getting downloads at a rate almost as regular as when I first tried LW using the freeware copy 9 months ago. I'm running it on the new 17" Mac G4 Laptop. |
Welcome Scotpond At least you have some good news for those of us in the trenches, but you'd better batten down the hatches in case our Californian friend lets go a salvo on the subject of Scotland's membership of the human race (sorry if my assumption of your location is wrong). |
Just Upgraded... Same error here, I upgraded Limewire today thinking that it would somehow benefit me, now I cannot d/l a damn thing. I get that same error discussed here EVERY TIME I try. I'm running Windows 2000, did not have this problem with the last version of Limewire, I sure as hell will not pay to upgrade if the free version doesn't even work... |
Windows 2000, upgraded today and now I can download NOTHING. Each time I try, the download will start but will only run for a few seconds before that error msg pops up. I guess I'll give morpheus a try, this software is unusable in it's current state, the new release is a royal POS... |
What is it about this thread? My sincerest apologies that my reaction to your post may seem a little hash but, "What have you read in this thread that suggests you experience to be an error?" I have quite clearly stated that it is a commonplace and natural outcome of excessive traffic and toplological instability on Gnutella that most searches will fail during downloading and require positive action on the part of downloaders to rescue the attempt. Self-help is now the order of the day. If, however, you are not interested in working to get your downloads and you want a few months of laid-back downloading, go back to whichever version of Limewire you were using before. Earlier versions of Limewire are kept available just for this situation (as you would have known if you have browsed through other threads). |
I am running Windows 2000 w/Limewire 2.9.8. Since upgrading to 2.9.8 I have had VERY LITTLE success downloading anything. I get," could not download, awaiting sources." Meanwhile i have users downloading songs from my database. I have tried some of the searching techniques i have read on the threads. Nothing works. Now Limewire wants me to reup my download page and pay again. I never had this problem with the earlier versions. Does anyone have any fixes for this problem or another program that actually works. I am tired of making my songs available and not getting the same back. What a waste of time this has turned out to be. Whatever happened to the good old days of Napster. Those guys had that system working great. |
Had same problem w/ Win2K + LW 2.9.8 upgrade. LW was 'all I had ever known'. My advice: Rather than try to figure out and understand why LW won't work, simply download Shareaza and enjoy life again. It's slicker than LW (IMO) and there's no setup required. Enjoy! ============ rlaspo wrote: I am running Windows 2000 w/Limewire 2.9.8. I have os 9.1.1 and since upgrading I to cannot download a single song. David91...that means NOTHING...NIl...ZERO. So all the patience in Gods beautiful creation cannot get me music with this program....and yes, you are sarcastic...very. people come here for help not attitude!! I am going back to 2.7. |
Ditto for me. Where do we find 2.7? |
Know what you mean, it's bloody frustrating isn't it!! |
Sarcastic one back again! Well, all I can say is that my experience does not match yours, which may or may not be significant but, without information on which machines you are using, what OS you have, what internet connection you have and which version of Limewire you are using, it is difficult to offer anything other than broad-stroke advice. If you want to go back, LW 2.7 is no longer available. The developers are trying to move everyone on to the more recent versions. I remember having reasonable success with this version: http://www3.limewire.com/download/2.8.6/ I hope you have better luck with that. However, that you are not managing to get "any" results from Limewire does suggest more general machine or internet connection problems. As a matter of interest, are you private users at home (and, if so, have you enabled port 6346?) or are you on a LAN (in which case, what is your system administrator's formal QoS policy for p2p application users?). |
so we are still screwed Has anyone found a solution?? I am running Limewire 2.9.11 Pro on windowsME I've been using Limewire for about 3 years with great success, but I am losing my patience. Since upgrading from 2.8, it is crashing on a regular basis and now this "could not download" thing. What's up with the Limewire developers? There's alot of people with the same issue. |
I have copies of 2.3.3 and 2.6.3 if any one wants to go back to the older versions. I may do that myself. |
This Might Help!! (MAC) I read this entire thread hoping for an answer to the same problem. The only thing that made most sense was to reinstall the older version. However, Limewire doesn't seem to make that readily available. What I did was to go into the "other" Installers" section on their main downlaod table. There you will find a version called MAC OS (no VM). This installs the bare app without messing with your default MJR version. Its been working for me all day!!!! I also trashed all traces of the old Limewire app to be safe. Try It! Good Luck!! Rif |
OS X security updates, Java & Awaiting Sources I have been reading all these threads and am getting more frustrated. I have tried everything these threads suggest I was running Limewire great! on 2 machines, one running os X 10.3.5 and one running os X 10.2.8. I was in love with Limewire. Then, I did the Security updates from Apple 2004-09-30; 2004-09-16; 2004-09-07 and Java 1.4.2 Update 2. Since that time all I get is "awaiting sources" I am sharing over 400 files on a fast dsl connection and I cant even download one thing. Please limewire, give us a solution! Please, please, please soon. Any suggestions greatly apprecaited. leonardo16 at excite.com |
ps ps, I tried to download the other version, as the previous author suggests... but for some reason my computer could not open or recognize it. sure hope I can get solution. Many thanks, leo |
leo, this thread is almost a year and a half old! Anyway, sounds like something with the system updates broke your connections, so just do a "safe boot" (restarting and holding down the shift key after the start-up sound) and a Disk Utility "Repair Permissions". Do a regular restart, and that should get your system back up to snuff. Check the OSX firewall (System Preferences>Sharing) to see that it is allowing port 6346, and if necessary, use the LimeWire Preferences "revert to default button." See if that works, and if not, post back. cheers |
awaiting sources Thanks so much for the quick reply. Ha, old thread... I had not even noticed..., but am I the only one experiencing this dillemma? You gave me hope! But alas, I did as you suggested but am still getting the same problem... Do you think I should re-install Limewire again? Run Beta version? I checked the ports- sharing-firewall and added the limewire some time ago... hmmm... maybe this is the problem... maybe I should have just left well enough alone... Not sure what do do next.. Any suggestions will be most graciously accepted. Thanks, Leo |
Hmmm--I'm a bit puzzled (those ideas should have worked). OS X problems like you described are pretty rare. To establish whether your downloads are working decently, try going to a reliable source like http://www.magnetmix.com/index.shtml and download one of their free files. What kinds of speeds do you get? |
