save directory changes randomly I'm having major issues with my save directory. Twice in the last month I've opened limewire only to get an error that says "Invalid directory for saving files. Please use another directory or revert to the default." I've tried browsing to my usual saving folder to no avail. I then try to use the default directory and I get the same error message. Lastly, I'm forced to use a folder within the limewire folder which is buried in my program files on my hard drive. There must be a simple solution... can anyone help me? |
I am having the same problem. I actually can't select any folder. When I select the window just hangs. I have reinstalled the application multiple times. One time it worked for a day then did it again. Does naybody know if PRO version solves this problem. This was happening with last version and current update. |
I haven't tried reinstalling, but I have had it work for a day and then give me the same problem again... I'm getting really tired of this issue. |
I saw in another thread that someone is experienncing the same problem with PRO all of a suddden. The fact that this has happened recently from all the threads I have seen makes me wonder its a worm or some other code that was planted by the law or some other individual to mess with the app and make it not workable. |
I've also had the "invalid directory" 4 or 5 times within the last 6 months. Until I checked out the forum I thought it was my directory file type changing or something. But no. I have been letting it go to the folder before my desired directory. Then transfering my files to where it ended up. What a Pain. Where's Kenny Fixit? Bam |
Clue about the invalid directory. If, for some reason, a file has a corrupted directory, I'm guessing that that would create that error message. |
So it's- Maybe there's something corrupted which I likely won't find, maybe. I appreciate your thoughts Blackbird, but I can't see how it can help me. Everything worked fine, then I stopped using it for a month or so. I started it up and suddenly have this happen again. I don't see any resolution to this problem. Invalid directory- Try rewriting the directory over and over but still see -Invalid directory. The defenition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Bam . |
the pro version is identical to the free one, except that it doesn't install bonzi buddy and all that *#$@ on your system. i've always used the 'shared' folder within the lw folder for d/ls. i'm gonna switch it to something else to see what happens... to band-aid the current situation with the nested folder, just put a link to the folder on your desktop. |
I just purchased Pro 3.02 and am having the same problems. At first it wouldn't save to a directory (folder) that I created for this. Found out that the program also put that directory in the "shared" area. After deleting it from the shared area, it worked until I exited the program and restarted it. Now it is an "invalid directory" ! Can not complain overall with the program, but all this moving files is a pain ! It was worth $ 9.50 to get rid of Bonzi *(#*!. SWJ |
SWJ: The idea is to share what you download. I would, perhaps, hypothesize that the creators of LW, in an attempt to minumize freeloading, automatically make the shared directory the same as download directory when the download directory is addded. Perhaps, due to this limitation set, one cannot delete it from the shared directory, so the error mesasge you see is a result of that. My advice, share what you download. |
BBird, I agree, and I have been sharing everything ( at least my files ) with the group. That is not the problem. What I do is save all the downloads to one directory until they are checked, cropped, and editted if needed, then I move them into a shared directory. I have all kind of editing equipment and make a lot of my own .mp3's, I don't want an unfinished product to be posted. That is another reason for the removed directory. I just want my downloads to go to a simple file called c:\mp3-downloads\. Sometimes it works for a session, but then reverts back to c:\documents\joeblabla\downloads\shared\blabla ... Any program that I use that works ( not too many around anymore ) as advertised, I support. The $ 9.50 was well worth it. The people that helped me with their shared files I hope will be helped by mine. Also, watch out for my "(my remixes)", clearly marked. They will usually make you laugh. As a retired broadcast engineer with heavy ties into production, I still have the equipment - the ear - and the time to play around. Thanks, SWJ |
swj, you earlier mentioned that lw moved a directory? i don't think lw can move directories. i tried to reproduce your problem, again, and it always works. i am wondering whether it has something to do with your system. i am using NTFS and doing frequent maintenance. regarding the sharing: please also share the files as you download them. the gnutella network heavily relies on the same file being available from multiple sources. |
Ok, this is a bit more complicacted than I originally thought. I was wondering, could you post your specs? Than maybe someone with similiar specs can try to reproduce the problem. |
What I said was "then I move them into a shared directory". I don't move the directory. I move the files. I have just completed another test of what I described as a problem, and I can get it to duplicate everytime. I don't know why you can't. Basically, I made two directories when I started using the program. MP3 and MP3-downloads. MP3-Downloads did work as a host directory for the downloads using the shareware program, but fails under the purchased program. Error message states "Invalid directory for saving files". I also attempted to make MP3 ( my shared directory ), my download directory also. It also gave me the error message "invalid directory". My only choice is to use the default directory selected by Limeware. Thanks, SWJ |
Windows Xp, 2 Mhz Intell, cable modem, P4 512k 478 pin, 80Gb HD ... I don't know anything else that might be important. When I made the last test, all other programs were closed and Limewire was the only app. running. Tnx, SWJ |
hmm.. maybe it has something to do with installing pro after /over free limewire? did you uninstall free limewire before installing pro? maybe you could try to get rid of everything limewire related
|
I have no problem doing that, in fact should have thought of it before. Does anyone know if I can re-download for free after uninstalling it. That is the only problem with not having a startup disc. I'll wait for a reply before attempting the re-install. Tnx, SWJ UPDATE Re-installed, same problem. NEXT. |
I have Mas OS X, so I can't try to duplicate your problem... The only suggestions I can really give are to trash your LW preferences, and if the problem still persists, try uninstalling LW, trashing everything of LW, and then reinstalling. Maybe someone with XP knows a solution? |
What I found: Lime wants to create the directory ( folder ). It also wants the download directory to be a sub-directory. The way I had it that wasn't working right was: c:\mp3 (for shared files) c:\mp3-downloads (for downloaded files) The way it will work now is: c:\mp3 (for shared files) c:\mp3\downloads (for downloaded files) (*) (*) directory created by limewire. Anyhow, much easier for me to check and move the files. SWJ |
What I do is to let LW put the shared music downloaded in its shared folder, then I review each song to my satisfaction. If all is good and the songs meets my standards I then copy it into a different personal folder. That way I know that they are safe. It's an extra step and it's just a band aid but it works for me. That's All. |
Thanks for the reply however at this point I don't think it applies. Unfortunately reading another post made me wonder about the legal issue of downloading / uploading music via Gnutella. A family member is an attorney and after a very quick review, I was advised to discontinue it's use. I guess all good things have a set back. I'll be watching this thread in case anyone else has anything to add to the above. Thanks. |
You're Right SWJ. I think I'll dump a personal and may or may not continue with a shared. After all, for the most part, it wasn't mine to begin with. Thanks for the advice. |
