Dumb newbie question....

I have just downloaded limewire and its great. One question though, on the bottom left hand corner of my screen, it says I am sharing 39 files. The number keeps on going up.

Should I clear this somehow? if so how do I do that?

Of course. After you have downloaded a file you are also sharing this file...
