Search Problem

Since I upgraded to ADSL last week I have
found that the search results in limewire 3.6.15
have

deteriorated. (average 150 hits)

I got better results with my 56k modem connection. (300 hits).

I keep trying this out with music i do not even like, such
as metallica, just to check. and yes, search results are poorer
with adsl?

or is it 3.6.15 related?

any quick fixes, anyone?

more searching questions

ah, yes, in addition another searching question.
browsing the forums i read someone mention
a
limited
"search horizon"

which to me indicates that limewire is not actually searching
all files available, but remains within a geographical/ physical
radius of my service prov. ??
say i am in australia, does this mean that i hardly ever get to see
files available in europe/north america, etc. ?

does this possibly explain certain poor search results, whether
the stuff is supposed to be 'rare' or not? for instance the
'stalker' soundtrack for the tarkovsky film?

thanks for replying, even if my questions may seem naive
to the tech-savvy among you

The search horizon is limited by the number of hits, not geography. I'm not sure what the current # is, but a while back results were limited to 150 hits to cut down on unnecessary hits. Sounds like all is well with your results. Too bad more people don't share and stay online more.

If you use a more specific search string, apparently it gets passed on further until the 150 (?) limit is reached, and thus can theoretically search the entire active net.

I recall reading that there is a way ultrapeers automatically choose their hosts to try and get 'global' coverage. This may apply when you are running as a leaf too. Check the IP's of the connected hosts in your connections pane to get a better sense of this.

Someone who can read the code, like afisk, sberlin or trap_jaw could tell you more. Try searching for their posts.

search result limits

hi stief.
thanks for your reply. that explains the search result limit of 150.
this is an undue limitation, i feel, for in previous larger limits i
used to be able to find the 'rare stuff', which then i could not
download in time because of 56k modem - which now do not show in search results.

but i will follow up on your suggestions of specifying searches, etc.

i also downloaded

the beta patch 3.7.9

a moment ago and
will post here later today to notify those interested
of my experiences with it thus far.

Welcome aboard--glad to see another beta tester. Check out the beta forum
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/forumd...?s=&forumid=21

btw--I don't miss the extra results, and found adding the file extension to the "any type" search string works quite well for me.

beta + search functions

hi stief (and anybody browsing this 'conversation'),

here some first results of trying out the beta 3.7.9 :

i entered quite a bit of information into my search queries (title + artist + album)

e.g. music in twelve parts + philip glass + music in twelve parts.

that seems to work ok but when i run another explicit search

and repeat the searches i get a crossover from search one to search two, and eventually only unrelated search results
thus pglass (search 1) + wynton marsalis (search2) resulted
in music entirely unrelated (crosby stills nash + young).

this is not too annoying yet.

for future reference, though, is it possible to un-install the
beta patch?

the beta is a full version, not just a patch, and uninstalls just like any version.

Search results are automatically AND (no '+' required). Some vendors return some strange results. For a while, I'd see results based on only one of three search terms, or perhaps based on some part of the user's path. Keep an eye on the vendor column (if displayed) to see what I mean.

Cheers

Not exatly. The search horizon is limited by the hosts/ultrapeers you are connected to. A search query is sent to all your host you are connected to and they send it to their hosts - this is done 7 times. The TTL (time to live) is set to seven because higher values aren´t reliable.

Of course you can limit the displayed results by hits, but this doesn´t affect the horizon itself.

beta uninstall ?

thanks stief,
again very helpful.

[i did not actually use the + in my searches, that was just my
typing shortcut in the previous post.]

as for the un-install of beta:

can i uninstall the beta version w/o uninstalling limwire 3.6.15
altogether, or will i have to re-download limewire 3.6.15.

i have found that the beta version consistently mucks up the
searches, so much so that i can only run one search
at a time.

i checked out the vendor versions, but again, this search confusion occurred across a variety of vendor versions w/o any
noticeable pattern.

cheers
