Default the need for speed

Probably a common question but i can't find an answer on the forums that relates to me situation directly, so sorry if its a repeat.
I am a new user of limewire and have had no trouble with small downloads, but bigger files take forever. i download big files one at a time, do not use the computer for anything else when downloading, and usually have a quick broadband connection, but the speed reguarly reaches and stays on 0kb's and gets no higher than 3kb's. is there anything i can do to speed up these downloads.
Thanks for any help
p.s. i am not very technically minded so if replys could be in laymens terms i would appreciate it.

You'll need to post your specs, or else you'll just get the usual "repeat search, choose multiple hosts, open your ports, etc" kind of answers.

The 'usual answers' are new to me, so if you could elaborate. The specs of the computer are 2600+proccesser, 512mb ram and 80gb hd

Sorry--I thought you'd read through the forums.

see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/forumd...?s=&forumid=81 especially the forum "rules" for what specs are helpful.

http://www.limewire.com/english/cont...ml#Downloading is also handy (your LW Help menu has more links too)

The bottom line is that even though you can tune your system and setting to allow the fastest possible downloads, if the person(s) sending you the files are busy or slow, all you can do is try to find more, or just be patient.

see if this thread helps http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=24879

cheers

Hey stief,

What kinda connection you have man to get 181kbps and say that it's ok?
The best I ever got with my 1024 DSL connection was something more like 70 kbps (at best)!
Man, and I thought MY connection was fast...

Hey murasame--glad to have another OSX poster here.

My setup is nothing special--cablemodem with 5mbps down, 1mbps up. OS 10.28 on a 700 G3 iBook.

I was pretty tickled by that screenshot--it was the best I've seen: Too bad the file was typical porno junk (and had 350 sources!). Sigh. Soon the real files will come!

I actually got to watch a fellow (GTK Gnutella) upload from me at 115KB/s the other day. That was impressive!

Whatever the coders are doing with the Partial File Sharing, they've sure proved to me that they've figured out how to optimize the code to pick the best hosts.

[edit: I checked more, and I was wrong. The ISP is pretty special. Accesscomm.ca says it's 5mbps down, 1 mbps up--and they were notified by Broadband Reports that their setup might rank in the top 10 worldwide (whatever those stats might mean) . Not bad for a little non-profit cable coop! So much for zee capeetalist dogs ]

Some things to consider >

Of course, you may have some other problem quite specific to your system, but in order to isolate any causes of your perceived poor performance, it would be good to ensure that you are using as much of your available bandwidth as possible for the purpose of actual file transferring.

btw, what sort of 'speeds' do you see when you are doing a simple download from an internet site ? (While you are downloading something AND doing nothing else).
