can't open downloaded files - Macintosh version Files get downloaded but I can't open them. I just started this thing so possibly I'm doing something stupid...who knows! That's why I'm here! So far I've downloaded two file types, MP3 and a txt file. I push the launch button and nothing happens. I try to open like the MP3 file in music match or something and it doesn't list it as a readable file. What am I doing wrong?! |
moi aussi exactly the same trouble on iMac . but it worked on the old version of lime wire ... help |
I am having the smae problem and I too had no problems with the old version. I have found the only way to access the files I have downloaded is to go under the "file" and choose "add to library" then find your lime wire application folder and then find your "shared" folder and your files should be in there. I should note that I am using iTunes for playback |
me too! all downloads refuse to open/play as they did in prior version. very frustrating after such great improvements in speed and selecting. does no-one have a fix for this fatal defect? |
I made an alias of the shared folder and put it on my desktop for easy access. The downloaded mp3 files in the shared folder open easily if you select them and then drag on top of your mp3 player. I use SoundJam. |
We're continuing to work on this issue -- it has to do with file types and creator codes. It's possible that just setting the file type and not the creator code would solve this problem, but I'll look into it some more. The internal LimeWire player is actually not available on Mac classic, although it is on OSX. |
As a previous post mentioned, you should definitely be able to double click on files from outside of LimeWire (from your shared directory). If double-clicking does not do it, dragging them to your player should work. |
OPEN the annoying "Lime Wire Document" files with this trick It was VERY annoying to find that after waiting for a download I was unable to open them because they were showing up as "Lime Wire Document" in my shared folder. So I did some reading & experimenting; this works wonderfully. If you cannot launch the .sit from your Lime Wire Library, then go to your Lime Wire folder & open up the Shared Folder within. Here you will see that the "File Type" is not a .sit, but a Lime Wire document. I used to throw these away. But there is a way to unstuff programs that is very easy. Like the mp3s that can be played outside of the Lime Wire library, you just have to move the file that won't uncompress directly from Lime Wire or your Shared folder into Stuffit Expander itself. Just open up "Internet Utilties" in your Applications menu. Select Aladdin folder. Drag the Lime Wire document file that will not uncompress on top of the Stuffit Expander icon. Then, double click the Stuffit Expander icon. Go to File and then Expand. It will unstuff the document. Good luck! |
Don't Upgrade! I upgraded LimeWire and found that it included advertisement banners. This was the only noticable difference... except: EVERY Mp3 file that I down load ends up in this nebulous format that is less convenient to open, and impossible to burn onto a CD. There is NO difference in search or download speed. There is no positive reason to upgrade and two very good reasons you should not upgrade. I'm going back to the previous version. I considered becoming a paying user, but who knows how usefull LimeWire is after you pay? Their promises for the new version certainly didn't come true. |
2.2 pro - same problem - downloaded files show up as Laserwriter 8500 files for some bizarre reason. I can't open them, can't translate them, so I can't burn them. Considering going back to earlier version. Very unhappy. |
i down load my mp3 files but i can't open them i have the same problem,i download mp3s files but i can't lauch them. please, help me |
ya i went to go on to my limewire and a box showed up and it asked if i wanted to download the new limewire so i said ok and downloaded it and now it won't even let me on my limewire i have even uninstalled it and installed it twice what is wrong with my limewire |
Limewire Please Help When I download files they are not being saved as mp3 files and this has only started happening since I updated to 2.2 PRO (lots of people seem to be complaining that the program gets worse every time it's updated???)....Can someone reply to this thread and help? The subject is obviously getting a lot of attention among Mac users. Please, anyone with information on why files are suddenly being saved in unusual formats - let us know the deal. Thanks! |
launching new files okay, sometimes files have too many characters and if you shorten the name and attach ".mp3" to the file name you may experience success! |
File Exchange When I upgraded, all the mp3 downloads started showing up as realplayer files. This is not a good thing when you are using itunes for mp3 playback. I opened the File Exchange control panel and found mp3's they had all been changed to realplayer, I changed them to itunes and everything works as it did before. Give it a shot... |
my mp3 files are now downloading as mpegs, i cannot launch them from the library, if i go to the shared folder and click on them i can open them in a translation application., the extention still says mp3 but the icon is not a quicktime mp3 icon anymore., when i drop the file in filetyper it says that it is a mpeg file???????????! |
Found A Way!!! I was one of those who could not burn files downloaded, but now life is better. I installed iTunes, which you can download for free from the Apple site. It can convert the files! It will allow you to burn them onto a CD. I had to go through a succession of system upgrades to enable me to use iTunes. It will only run with System 9.0 and will only burn CDs after you've upgraded to 9.2. I think that's right. Anyway, I emailed the system guy at Limewire, and he admitted that they've known about this problem for a while. They don't seem to be completley on top of some aspects of designing for the Mac platform. iTunes worked for me. One nice thing iTunes does, is that it allows you to set up different lists tunes. You can place the tunes in order, listen to them to make sure you like the selection, then burn the list to your CD. It doesn't seem to have a music seach and download function, so Limewire is still needed. I reverted to the older version of Limewire, too. Good luck! |
Yeah I'm having the same problem. Only thing is I can't seem to even find the files that I have downloaded. Nothing is showing up in the library on Limewire, and the only thing I can find is what I downloaded that was incomplete. My shared files folder is completely empty. Another comment posted on here was right....Limewire gets worse as they upgrade it! I'm also on a Mac. I can't launch any of the files I downloaded, and I can't even find them. |
Try reinstalling LimeWire or try using the default Shared path, - check permissions, free space on your disk, etc. LimeWire files don't just vanish for no reason. |
I've paid the nominal fee for pro and have had trouble downloading ever since. e.g., downloading several files, the first few will be recognized by quicktime mp3 or iTunes....... then, suddenly, they are idendentified as Real Player mp3 and nothing recognizes them. AVI (starwars trailer) is also unopenable. I would like to A) set itunes as my defaut player B) open all these files that I keep downloading:( |

;) thanks, this is brilliant and I would NEVER have thought of it......duh. |
GEt a copy of MP3Rage from chaoticsoftware.com (it's a free demo). Drop the bad file on it, and use the popup menu on the right (right next to where it says Type and Creator) to select the type of player you want the file to open with. Works for me every time. You can also use MP3 Rage to fix Stuffit files (not just MP3s) that show up as Limewire documents: just change the Type to SITD and the Creator to SIT! (all caps, and you do need the exclamation point) |
