I searched the forum but to no avail. Problems with DL speed!
 

Hey guys. I know you get this alot, and I've been scouring the forums for quite some time to try to find an answer, but nothing works.

The problem is, I connect great, and bring up alot of search results, but when I click to download, it downloads at 2-5 kb/s.

I am using a laptop from my apartment complex which has Time Warner cable internet (I think. We have time warner cable tv...)

I think I am on a LAN because I sometimes bring up "Ethernet" as a speed and that download speed is incredible.

But anyways, if you guys could please enlighten me on how to fix this connection problem I would be most grateful.

I am using Windows XP.
On an Intel Celeron processor.
The computer is hooked up directly to the ethernet port in the wall via Ethernet cable.
My internet speeds are fast, and I pinged at 800 kbps.

Your downloads are limited by your hosts ability to upload. If you are connecting to someone with a modem their ability will be the bottleneck.

Thank you very much for your reply, but I assure you that I am downloading files with numerous hosts, and the listed speed was DSL or higher.

It occurs with every download whether it be from a T1 source, DSL source or Cable source.

You can't always go by what a host's reported connection speed is. That said, if you have several connections at the same time for the same file your speed should certainly be much higher.

What version of Limewire are you running? I have been getting excellent connections with all the 4.X.X Pro Beta versions.

Just one point. Even T1 connections get bombarded with dwnld requests. And also even T1 connections can have upload limits for speed. There's potential for competing dwnld bandwidth there. And you might be competing with them. Sorry Norm I don't know if that adds anything other than what you've already said.

Well, im using 4.0.7.

But I don't think its just cause the hosts are bombarded. I thought that was the case, but the slow downloads are evident in almost everyone of my downloads.

For some reason, i suspect that the internet I am hooked up to in my apartment complex is LAN based, and the admins could have some kind of restriction.

Similar to how I had to forward my port on my wireless router at home, I was wondering if there is such a thing for my internet here.

I am still experiencing slow downloads from sources of 100+.

This is truly mind boggling.

That really is a curious & interesting situation. Are u sure about that? I guess from what I've heard about cable, the downside is how many locals are using it at the same time. In fact I've heard of major neighboring disputes as a result of it. In such a situation I'd try & work out what times the local cable traffic is busy during the day & what times it's not. It might mean some loss of sleep but in the end it's what u have to work around & try to make the most of. If it's really bad then perhaps some communal agreements as to times might be helpful 'if that's possible & might be asking a lot'!

But then again, I might be barking up the wrong tree here. Any suggestions Norm.

Also make sure you have your settings of LW & OS & router, etc. set correctly/at highest potential for your setup. I have cable, and my use affects other users
 

Having said that, I will explain the set-up. My home had a server and mail server. Now we just have a cable connection with our local cable co. Both showed the same symptoms: If I set my uploads to high and lots of users connected, OR if I was downloading lots of content, the internet connection become similar to a connection via the phone line! I use a iBook connected via airport, other users connect directly via ethernet cable.
If your landlord connects all of the apartment buildings off of one cable modem, then I would complain- unless you dont pay a lot for the cable connection. Sounds like you should be paying the price of a phone connection.

I do have one question for you though: When you browse the internet do the pages load fast? If they do load right away then it might just be limewire, but if everything you do online takes forever, then it is your internet connection.

To answer your question, it MAY be possible that my landlord is having all of us on 1 cable modem, but the internet is actualyl really fast. I tested my speed using one of those internet tests and it came out to be almost 900 kbps.

I'll try soem of those solutions, as soon as I can. I'm really busy with college right now so I couldn't reply sooner, but once again, thank you all for your help. I am extremely grateful that you guys are putting forth the time and effort to help me.
