Fake files (built in?)

I wonder why the hell I allways get two hits on whatever I search for. for example:
Search: hwjfhx
result:
at least 30 hits for both hwjfhx.jpg and hwjfhx.wmv

can anyone explain why these fakes allways shows up? I think it's really annoying when I search for something I want to find and gets about 80 hits. But nothing.

This is spam! Go to your LW menu Tools-Options & Filters & keyword. Add .jpg, .wmv & .exe to your keywd filter. These words can be added/deleted anytime (oh don't forget to press the Apply button.) This link about Quality on the Network gives some explanation! (click me.)

What if you happen to search for movies or pictures?
Afaik know, the spammers have some autogenerating system, which registers your search term, and returns a given picture or movies with the same name....

What puzzles me most, is the number of hosts, and the fact that this is so effective, im almost wondering if Limewire itselfs have imbedded this to earn some dough

You can add/delete the keyword filters at anytime, but just remember to press the Apply button for it to have immediate effect. As a word of advice though, the best movies (best quality) are not in wmv format. The best are in mpg/mpeg & perhaps AVI. There's also some other newer reasonable formats out there. But they're not so common yet.

No LW does not have any form of adware, etc (the earliest versions did.)

You totally miss the point: I search for pictures. I look for jpg. You tell me to filter out jpg.
Bad idea...

What i want, is Limewire to display (by collapse or other ways) all hosts which have a file.. Then can i block out each host manually. If LW refuses to do that in any coming version, i think that stands as a proof.

And, you dont either explain how the spam works... And im talking bout 30-100's of hosts which has the same file, no matter what the file is named. "xxclslskkgkgdsglsfkgijfgjjsdgjhsfdkjghsfg" and within a minute will it show up on multiple (30+) hosts.

The versions of LW before LW4 allowed you to separate the search results into individuals as you were suggesting. I personally didn't like this being taken out but there was apparently a reason. You'd need to search the forum to find this reason. I think I saw it in the New Feature Requests section a mth/2 ago.

As I said, you can add/delete filters anytime. If you only/predominantly search for jpgs, then I guess you wouldn't want to filter them out at all.

If I understand you right you want to block the hosts which offer such fakes? This works only if they are using fixed IP addresses, normally only companies have fixed IPs. People that donīt use fixed IP and are spamming are only blocked until they reconnect, a dynamic IP changes every time you connect. This would mean the next time you would block an other user who is using this IP.

To make it short there arenīt good solutions at the moment you can filter it out like LOTR suggested, you can also limit the file size this helps if you are looking for videos which are usually huge. Or live with the fakes - ignoring helps. ;)

AVI sucks -- nearly every avi off limewire either is upside-down, or sound with no video, or doesn't work at all, and that's using the latest Winamp media player too.

Lord of the Rings March 14th, 2005 01:39 AM

I doubt very much whether winamp would be able to play all video formats. Besides, winamp company has been or is being taken over & this will be the final version of winamp. What you need is codec support, divx player & others like vlc which are designed specifically for the job & have the latest avi codecs built in. avi is certainly a damned sight better than wmv & rm.
