Social Security Number

Just built a new computer with xp. I installed zone alarm and of course limewire. I set up the id lock in zone alarm so my social security number and my wife's, along with other private information, is not sent out over the internet.

When setting up limewire, I just downloaded today, nothing was asked about ssn #'s, or even anything close, but I keep getting the popup saying limewire wants to send my social security number or my wife's over the internet, but zone alarm is first asking my permission. I keep on saying no, and to remember the setting for no, and it pops up again wanting to send it to another ip address.

I have zone alarm pro, norton's antivirus, and I just got this running the last 2 weeks. My ssn is not listed anywhere on my new computer (haven't transferred everything over from the old yet) except for where inserted for zone alarm.

What gives? This has not happened before, ever. It is only popping up asking that limewire wants to send.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Kevin

Where the heck did you get your LW from?? The ONLY place you should have got it is from here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/home.shtml It sounds as though your computer needs a clean up with a decent anitvirus app, ad-ware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ or/& Spy Sweeper http://www.webroot.com/wb/downloads/index.php The normal LW sould NEVER ask such a thing unless another app/virus is masking itself over LW.

Social Security Number? Yeah, it surely isn't LimeWire that wants that -- atleast not the LimeWire we build and ship. We don't want and don't need that. I seriously recommend scanning for viruses and spyware. You've got some nasty things on your computer if it's asking for SSNs.

I appreciate the responses, and if my computer was older, I'd really wonder. As far as the LW download, I did download it at the link you provided in the first place. I have a current antivirus installed. Keep in mind this computer is only a few weeks old, haven't used it that long. I know that doesn't matter, but it didn't make sense. I ran adaware and spybot search and destroy and nothing out of the ordinary there.

Could it be in downloading video that that triggered it somehow? Maybe (I don't know, because I'm oblivious to to inner workings of the computer) if in downloading video, numbers are sent, and since may numbers and combinations are sent, this triggered it?

Keep in mind that how I knew about the ssn wanting to be sent was zone alarm's box opening up and saying someone was trying to send first my ssn, then my wife's ssn to a particular ip address, and that ip address kept on changing. so new boxes opened up asking for permission to send it, which I of course declined. ZA stopped it, but I'm just trying to figure it out. Especially since the only place on this computer that I have our two ssn's entered (as far as I know) is the id lock list from ZA.

Since then, I have not had any more requests for permission to send the ssn's, but then again, I haven't run the LW app again.

I also, as a check, ran an online virus scan, with nothing popping up at all.

If you dwnlded a file with a .wmv extension then anything is possible! That's M$ for you. They have incorporated a licencing system that is incorporated within many of their files. Some of these request connection to a site. This also makes way for this portion of the file to have been replaced with a request for an alternative site. M$ are so dumb it's unbelievable. And I thought my IQ was small! lol :D Well I think my brain is getting smaller but M$ are getting dumber by the update. :D

I would delete any such files that you may have dwnlded either purposely or accidentally. Also I would add .wmv, .wma & .jpg to your keyword filters. ie: LW's menu Tools-Options-Filters & keyword. Don't forget to press both the Apply & OK buttons after.

Are you sure a wmv file originated from LW or another source.

rsman,

I think the more likely answer is that you're confusing what ZoneAlarm is asking you. ZoneAlarm doesn't know your SSN, and (as far as I know) it doesn't know when another application wants to send an SSN. What it's asking is if it is okay for these applications to allow outsiders to connect to you and vice versa. Read the message ZoneAlarm gives very closely -- it should say nothing specifically about a social security number.

Thanks.

If you know for sure that your SSN is not listed on your comp then it's not your SSN it's talking about: it can't have guessed it. And yes, yes, I know that the net is a dangerous place where you can get anything, but that don't make it a mind reader.
